Thoughts on sets dungeons and sets

Random thoughts or whatever

Set Dungeons

A horrible implementation of a possibly good intention. Outside of that thing we do for the season journey completion I doubt anyone does them, mainly because the objectives force you to play in a way that no sensible person would want to play.

My thoughts to make set dungeons good:

The idea is give us another game play mode that is worth repeating regularly instead of this thing we dread doing for a season journey checkbox.

  1. Ditch the wonky objectives! For example, firebird set dungeon requires you to DIE! to proc the cheat death meteor to get mastery. STUPID.STUPID.STUPID! Who the BLIPPTY BLIP allows themself to die? NO ONE! Get rid of all that garbage.
  2. Make it a requirement to wear every set item. It’s a set dungeon, not a partial set dungeon after all. None of that 5 pieces + rorg. If the set is a 7 piece set, like tal rasha and a few others, then you are wearing all 7. You can wear whatever else you want and take advantage of rorgs for that stuff but you have to wear all the items in a set.
  3. The maps and standardized “difficulty” contribute to the meh. Either make it like a Nephilim rift or a Greater rift: random maps, rift boss at the end of it, scaling difficulty either with game level (like neph rifts) or player chosen difficulty level (like greater rifts).

I think if Blizz made set dungeons difficulty like greater rifts and added a leaderboard many players would rush them to flex their competitive muscles.

  1. Ditch the mastery vs completion differences. K.I.S.S. the objective is kill everything in the time limit required. K.I.S.S. is better than complex, stupid and wonky and allows players to play how they want.
  2. Make the reward set-specific. My suggestion is based on your performance and the difficulty level the system gives you several reroll choices for 1 set item you were wearing and you can either keep what you have or select one of the reroll choices provided. The difference between this reroll and regular cube rerolls is that this one will always keep the same quality level. If an ancient item is selected for reroll, all reroll choices will be ancient. If primal item is selected for reroll, all reroll choices will be primal. You can’t go up OR down in quality level. It gives you the option to get a better selection of attributes rather than upgrading just one.

And finally,

  1. Bring in permanent death for hardcore players. I say that as an experienced, seasoned hardcore player: if we make this a system where you can play as you want and its farmable just let us die if we do die.

Sets in general.

6 Piece Class Sets

Turn all the current 6 piece class sets into 7 piece class sets. Add in an amulet, belt, off hand, main hand, 2hander, ring, bracers or whatever to all the class sets that are merely 6 pieces. This will allow us to mix and match sets a bit more and open up more build options and game play.

Stale Non-class Sets

Give some love to the Asheara, Demon, and, above all Blackthorn sets and make them useful again.

Asheara: I like the idea that Asheara had with the followers mechanic. Maybe make the 3 set bonus 1 extra perm follower of your choice with all their gear and skills and the 4 set bonus 2 extra perm followers with all their gear and skills.

Demons: does anyone still use this set??? This thorn-oriented set is so meh that not even thorn crusaders seem to use it. Not sure what should be done beyond a massive buff to its thorns mechanic to make it a viable option but hopefully more imaginative people than me can suggest something.

Blackthorns: back in 1.x actually getting a Blackthorn drop was cool, now the pants are good for some LoD builds because of the elemental damage but the rest of items are junk. Do something…

The terrible objectives simply show the Dev’s didn’t actually play the game. Many set build objectives need a rework. The biggest problem is the secondary “kill all the monsters”. It is literally the same for every set dungeon. Unfortunately, not all builds are designed for full map clears (DH Shadow) and should have a different secondary. Simply lazy design.

The objectives should more closely resemble the way the sets play, but they shouldn’t be just play the set. We have plenty of activities for that already.

Let’s not try to fix them by making them worse. More choice is always better. If you want to equip all 7 pieces, go for it, but let’s not narrow the focus for everyone.

Fine the way they are. The objectives should be the challenge, not RNG being the challenge. Some people are obsessed with jamming RNG in every orifice. It is not needed.

Why try to make Set Dungeons into GRs, when we already have GRs. Set dungeons need to be different, otherwise, no need to have them.

Would definitely be nice. Giving more options is always welcome.

Best thing they could do with Blackthorne’s is move them out of the loot table and into the blacksmith’s crafting list like Asheara, Aughilds, etc. I am tired of being trolled by Primal Blackthorne’s set pieces. I literally have more Primal Blackthorne’s this season than I do of the other 5 sets for my class combined.

Agreed. I think it was meant to showcase the mechanics of the set or something, but they don’t teach anything to anyone as they are now.

Don’t see the point of this. I’m playing tal rasha whether I have 5, 6 or 7 pieces equipped, as long as I have the 6 piece bonus. Just line up the requirement with the leaderboards, which is to have the 6piece bonus. Nothing else makes sense.

Yep, if you really want to make ppl play set dungeons this would do it. But then you’d have to make sure that it’s actually fun to play them.

I love this concept.

Many other games have that, you need to use skill/item/gem X to upgrade skill/item/gem X. That doesn’t exist at all in D3, the resources you get are not at all bound to the build you run, only to the class, and the crafting mats can be used for any class.

Personally, I think the idea of making special dungeons to showcase set is doomed to fail, as how the set is played varies from patch to patch, from season to season. And even in one season, the same set can often be played in different ways. If anything, I think it should be similar to challenge rifts, but instead of taking super low GR clears, you take hand picked legit clears from top 100 or so on the leaderboard, and then maybe decrease difficulty a bit to give ppl a chance to play the build. But I don’t that would really work either.

Instead I’d ditch the entire set dungeon idea, and just go with the concept of giving set-specific rewards from clearing high solo GRs with that specific set. Maybe it could upgrade the multipliers on the set bonuses or something. Like, GR110+ can be used to upgrade 2-set, GR120+ for 2-set or 4-set and GR130+ for any. or something like that.

I like this.

It would open up possibilities, but one setup would still be best, so it wouldn’t really increase diversity. We already got lots of bad possible ways to play every set that no one is using because it’s not as good as the best way. Instead it’d completely break the meta with all the new 6 + 4 set combinations, and the entire game would have to be rebalanced. So I don’t think this is a good idea.

They don’t need to be “good”; you don’t even need to master them and completing them with regular objective requirements are easy once you get their quirks.

I think that won’t happen as Mastery requirements gates the cosmetics and this would be their purpose.

People wanted Set Dungeons be gone; putting a proper reward would make them mandatory again and people going to hate it. Set Dungeons supposed to give you ideas of the Set and your options on it; all you need to do is explore items and skills. Players supposed to trial and error when they fail, yet they never do that because that guide they have read, online, supposed to be “the blueprint for all” which is not.

Those Set Dungeon guides out there are written with lowest damage output denominator in mind; and higher your damage, it’ll be harder for you to complete objectives. So you shall bring more utilities for this challenge, no matter which guide you have read; your comfort level changes as you rise in power due requirements of objectives. This is their point, not creating overpowered combinations to break the whole balance of the game.

Again, people hated Set Dungeons because guides written about them usually written for comfort of the lowest level paragon. When they apply them with their overpowered characters, things didn’t really fit and they hated it instead of trying their options. Adding a leaderboard would make them hate it more. If we go by your suggestions, then Dungeons would have no difference from Greater Rifts which offer better rewards.

Isn’t going to happen at any point. Those 7-8 piece class Sets exist because they’re a legacy Set of classic Diablo 3 times where you had no RoRG back then. Set Dungeons are made for one Set in mind for design with objectives.

Also allowing such thing would push player to hybrid Sets for even greater power growth. This could be nice on paper, but also give a false impression of creating a broken combination of Sets would be viable or balanced. This is not a way of “making dungeons better”, this is a thinly veiled request for power creep. Each build is separated by their effort, obstacles and decision making at this point; they won’t go back to the board to design everything from scratch for balance again.

If killing everything on sight would be the only objective then what difference does Set Dungeons have compared to Greater Rifts? You have your leader boards separated by Set items already. What do you exactly plan here? You are asking to break the entire balance of the game to “fix” Set Dungeons; but that wasn’t your main objective is it?

If I can get the green wings, so can a lot of others. They even removed most of it for season journey part

i agree with much of what is in number 5. For me i hate doing the sets, i am not good enough to complete most of the sets, but i have an insane flaw about my playing approach. I almost have to complete the season or the alter and it drives me crazy trying to do some of the gimmicky things. and much of it is really boring. every season I have to waste time running A Barbarian up to level and do crazy things to get the immortal king set. that is one of the only set dungeons i can comfortable run. many times i have given up but then a few days later come back to try it again. A lot of this is real gimmicky esp for the alter, to have to get an ancient hellfire ammulet i have to run key lords over and over then do the boss runs over and over to get around 50 to 60 rings to guarantee one will be ancient. many years ago i said i would never do the staff of herding again, that literally drove me out of the game, i quit for a long time. i know it is easier now, but it brings back painful memories. and lastly i am not sure about this one, but i have read that the percentages are hard. they say there is a one in 4 hundred chance to get a primal. but there is a huge difference in having a one in four hundred chance and the odds goin up with every failure. that is what drove me crazy about the staff of herding. we we run things enough it should get closer to an almost 100 percent drop

While it’s viable, you don’t have to do that. I see that you are playing Monk for this Season and Sunwuko Set has one of the easiest Set Dungeons to boot.
In case you would like to run with Inna’s, which you currently equipped, it’s tricky but still doable. You just need more utility and movement speed buffs so your Mystic Allies won’t engage at the monsters earlier than you want them to be.

As expected there’s a huge difference between practice and averages. You should always expect that average value to go up or down on your own experience.

Also, holy crudes, separate your posts in paragraphs. This is eyesore to read all of that.

Diablo 4 needs these. It’s clear Blizzard has no chance of balancing the game without them.

We could still be walking everywhere and have bugs like this lool
