Since when? Did this change? I’ve had one in my stash for ages on non-seasonal. I got on this season, and used it once before I sacrificed it … and it’s totally gone out of my inventory… Is this a bug? Is this intended? If it was one time use, I’d never have wasted it on that stupid gem run. Is it possible to get it back at this point?
Yes. That’s what ‘sacrifice’ means. Why would you want, or need, another one? Whimsyshire is lame - better to hunt for Rainbow Goblins and run through Whimsydale, instead.

No, you don’t understand. I used it once… I was GOING to sacrifice it at the altar, after I used it once. However, just the simple act of USING it for whimseyshire the one time made it go away.
I fully expected it to be gone after sacrificing at the altar… hence, using it once before hand… I’ve had these in other seasons, and they were good for repeat uses to open the portal to whimseyshire… I’ve never had one poof like this before.
I used mine about 20-30 times to to open Whimsyshire to farm the Spectrum xmog before sacrificing it at the Altar.
It is never supposed to be consumed by anything other than the altar. You can’t even drop it on the ground or salvage it.

Are you sure you can’t drop it? I think I did on non-seasonal. Once I found the rainbow portrait I took an oath to never enter Whimsyshire ever again. Pretty sure I got rid of it to clear up stash space. Let me check…
update: I checked my non-season, no Staff in stash or in any toons inventory. It’s been a while, but I believe I did throw it on the ground.
That doesn’t solve OP’s problem, however… Not sure if you can make another, or not. Never ran into this one before. I don’t see why she couldn’t. 
@ OP. You did something wrong… I just got the staff and tested out going down into WhimsyShire and it did not consume my staff.
Just now went in to check for myself.
- I tried to Salvage the Staff of Herding. It cannot be salvaged.
- I tried to drop the Staff of Herding on the ground. It cannot be dropped.
Do you ever sell items? If you did and left the game since, then… it’s gone. (You can buy back items you sell. But, only if you haven’t left or quit the game first).
One last thing: How many Seals have you unlocked on the Altar of Rites?
If you try to sell it, you get a confirmation dialog, so it can not even be sold by accident.
