Staff of Herding Ingredients

I’ve a problem I’m hoping somebody can help me solve. That is, do Staff of Herding pieces respawn if I one once and (ignorantly) sold it? Long ago, in game-time, I stumbled across the Black Mushroom, didn’t realize what is was or that it had any real value, and, to clear a space in my stash, sold it for one gold. Does that mean I’ve lost it forever, and so should give up on building the Staff? Or could the Mushroom respawn in the Cathedral, for me to find again if I’m diligent - and lucky - enough?

If I’m not mistaken itll respawn endlessly

henry is correct. They will continue to randomly (rarely) spawn or drop in game even if you have them.

You should be able to get the mushroom again. Thankfully that one is pretty easy to get.

You can have multiple of the same items in your possession. So farm on, but I suggest getting Chilling stone whatever first. That takes some luck, farming. Rest is easy.

Gibbering Gemstone, from Chiltara in A3.

Ironically I used to have extreme issues farming this one, until someone shared a secret with me. I will now share it with you.

Only look for this gem on T3/T4/T5 games. You should get it pretty quickly then.

Dang, after a lot of farming on T16… dropped first time (that the Caverns of Frost spawned) on T4. How does this voodoo work?

Now all I need is the recipe…

Got it in a seasonal T16 bounty a few days ago.

Thanks, folks; much appreciated. I wonder, though, whether you might indulge me a little further, with a couple more stupid (and I know they are) questions on this topic. I’m having problems with the Black Mushroom, and with Leoric’s shinbone. First of all, is the mushroom indoors at the Cathedral? I don’t mind looking several times, 'til it drops, but I’d love think I’m in the right place. If I come along the road, and enter the Cathedral from the Garden, where do I look? Where is the thing? I know it’s supposed to be in a lightly glowing patch of mushrooms, but I’ve never even found that mushroom patch. Similarly, I’ve never been able to find the fireplace wherein the leg’s supposed, let alone the burnt logs, which I know are not always there. Again, I don’t mind going back multiple times, but it’s frustrating when I can’t even find the right places to look. Oh, one thing more, please, just out of curiosity. Is there any purpose or value to Buddy the “sort of” hound, or Blaze the flaming skull, or can I safely get rid of them?
Again, thanks, everyone, for the help you’ve, and the further help I fervently hope you give me on this stuff.

Yeah, I got one in T16 this season too.

There’s a specific corner room it spawns in. It’s in Cathedral 1. It’s a square room off of an L-shaped corner tile, with an entrance from either side of the L. It looks like this (image not mine, courtesy of IcyVeins):

It always spawns in that orientation, too, you won’t see it spawned in a different rotation. So depending on where you start from you can either run down (if you start near the top) or to the left until you get to the area in the bottom left corner of the map, and the room should spawn near there.

This IcyVeins guide might be helpful for your hunt: How to Access Whimsyshire and Craft Staff of Herding Guide - Diablo 3 - Icy Veins

It tells you where to find each item, and has some helpful pictures of the locations so you know where to look.

They are different pets. You right-click on them (I think? I’ve had them all for a while so it’s been a while since I had a new one) to “learn” them. Then in your Cosmetics menu (accessed by F1 unless you’ve changed the default keybindings) you can choose one to equip. They follow you around and pick up gold for you. Don’t get rid of them, you might as well “learn” them even if you it’s one you don’t like and won’t use. No harm in having them available in your cosmetics menu.

I used to save Leoric’s Shinbones to try to see how many legs that guy must have had. After I got up to 20, I gave up. We may never know how many legs King Leoric had.

Enter Leorics manor.
Turn right just before the stairs (don’t go up).
Fireplace is at the end of the room.

Found em! Got them all, and I’ very, very grateful for your help, all of you. I’ve got the Staff of Herding…but…um…if I’m understanding right, one is able to improve the Staff. OK, so I did get the Heart of Fear and the other three widgets, in the respective realms. I expected them to show up in my inventory, but apparently they are not actually items, per se. It seems I have to use them to get things like “Leoric’s Regret”, etc. OK again, but…I’ve killed Leoric, as the Skeleton King, well over a dozen times, looking for the “Regret”, without success. Am I doing something wrong? Is that NOT the way to acquire the “Regret”. etc.? Should I simply keep killing him (and Maghda, etc.) over and over, 'til he drops the “Regret”? Sorry for being stupid about these thing, but…well, maybe I just am as dumb as I seem. I’d greatly appreciate your indulgence, and any help you might give.

You don’t improve the staff anymore.

That’s a relic from pre-RoS DIII, where you upgraded the staff according to difficulties (e.g. an Infernal Staff of Herding would be used on Inferno difficulty, a Nightmarish Staff of Herding would be used on Nightmare difficulty).

When RoS came out, they simplified the process, and now there’s just one staff of herding. You don’t have to upgrade it anymore.

Leoric’s Regret etc. are for crafting a Hellfire amulet (or ring), unrelated to the Staff of Herding. But for your info, there are four machines (Infernal Machine of Regret/Putridness/Terror/Fright) you farm from the keywardens in Acts 1, 2, 3, 4, then you use those in a house with a breakable door in the Act 1 town, open some portals, and fight the uber bosses to get the materials (one from each portal/set of bosses) to craft the amulet. Leoric’s Regret/Vial of Putridness/Idol of Terror/Heart of Fright are the materials that drop from the uber bosses to make Hellfire amulets/rings.

When there were only 4 difficulties one could upgrade the staff to enter Whimseyshire on each difficulty. That is no longer necessary or even possible. A plain staff of Herding is all you need at any difficulty.

I’m not sure I understand what you are asking here, but I will explain the process.
Leoric’s Regret, Vial of Putridness, Idol of Terror, and Heart of Fright are materials for crafting Hellfire Amulets. When picked up they appear in your Materials Tab of the Inventory.
They are dropped by the “Ubers” which are pairs of Act Bosses accessed by using Infernal Machines which are obtained by killing the Keywardens in Acts 1, 2, 3, and 4.
The number of Machines dropped by Wardens, and the number of Materials dropped by the Ubers is dependent on the game difficulty setting. Neither will drop below Torment 1 at Level 70.
The drop rates for all items can be seen here: https://d3resource.com/difficulties/index.php

Take the Machines to Act 1 and break down the door behind the Healer in town. This will reveal the Heretic’s Abode. Once inside you can open portals to the 4 Uber Realms. One of each portal per game.
When you kill the Ubers they will drop the Mats specific to their Realms.
Again, the drop rate is dependent on Difficulty Level, but 1 is guaranteed on T1.

Once you have the Mats you can buy the Plan for the Hellfire Ammy from Squirt in Act 2. Teach the plan to the Jeweler to start crafting the ammies.
