Squirts/Shield Pylon Insta Death

OP:
[Whenever I wear Squirt’s Necklace and the Shield Pylon wears off (the necklace is fully loaded x10), if I take a fatal hit, the damage actually kills me. The damage bypasses and my Enchantress’s cheat death and my Akkarat’s Champion/Prophet completely. This happens 100% of the time when the said circumstances are met.]

Edit, 4/30/2023:
As I discovered in the process of looking into this via my own video captures, the mystery death is more related to specific mob/hit type encounters. It seems like dune dervishes and/or sand dwellers may be responsible, but since I never know what actually kills me, I am just speculating. Since I am not seeing this happen with even my Phalanx-Akkhan w/Prophet variant (and that thing takes a lot more damage than the H-Bomb LoD build where the bug occurs), I suspect there may be some unusual coding issue that leads to the problem…perhaps one related to Squirts necklace used with H-Bomb? Unknown.

Blizzard, this is where you come in.

Maybe you should record a video of this happening?

Thing is, both of those aren’t super reliable cheat deaths, as in they don’t make you immune to damage for a while. So if stand in a desecrator or poison or something, while being very squisy, can go through those cheat deaths very quickly.

The 10x Squirts doesn’t play a role in your damage taken (it’s not a shield), it only means that you haven’t taken damage in the last 10 seconds.

Regardless of the Squirts stacks, the very moment you take health damage (not shield damage), you are hit for 1.5x the initial damage due to the 50% damage increase, which in high content can be an insane amount of damage. So when the shield pylon expires, you’re taking health damage high enough to theoretically kill you.

In that instance, unfortunately, the Crusader’s Akarat’s Champion-Prophet is just a heal effect, not a damage immunity, so you can still be killed by a strong enough hit. (Such as a second hit that was as strong as the first.) The enchantress’ Fate’s Lapse doesn’t actually protect you from damage at all. It only slows down time giving you a chance to retreat. You can still be hit by the monsters’ slow motion attacks.

So it’s possible to have DoT’s, or multiple damaging hits in rapid sucession to blow strait though both skills. Things like molton explosions that look like a single explosion but are actually several stacked on each other milliseconds apart. Or standing in DoT ground effects, etc.

It just turns out that Akarat-Prophet and Enchantress cheat death aren’t the best combination for actually cheating death.

@Leviathan

Akarat Champion / Prophet is a Crusader skill… it works a bit differently than Nerves of Steel.

Doh! Somehow I got Barbarian in my head when replying. I’ll make some edits. Thanks!

Thing is, the word bypass means here to go around something without triggering it. In my case, neither the Enchantress’s cheat death, nor Akkarat’s/Prophet are being triggered in this scenario. I have done video capture on multiple occasions of this instance. In all cases, my Akkarat’s is actually some place midway through its active rotation, while I am looking at my resurrection options HUD (you can see where the Akkarat’s is while the game is so paused and verify what happened frame by frame via a video editor)…and the Enchantress’s cheat death is not triggered either at any point.

Great! Upload them to YouTube so we/they can see them!

Yeah would be good to see!

There are multiple possibilities here I think. Ppl sometimes die through shield pylon, so bypassing (as in not triggering) cheat deaths wouldn’t be unimaginable, but we’ve also had ppl experiencing the same as OP and video review will show the cheat death procced for like 1 frame and then death in the next frame. Diablo ticks at 60 frames per second, so if recording is slower than that it might be a case of cheat death proccing and death on next frame without it being captured on the video. So yeah, if you can upload, would be interesting to see. :+1:

I thought that only the Templar had a true “cheat death” ability, since he actually provides immunity for a short while. The Scoundrel and Enchantress mitigates the damage and allows you to escape the situation, but doesn’t make you immune.

Yes, but he is saying that the Enchantress’ cheat death did not proc, and neither did Akarat’s Champion. It should show the icon if it procced, even if it instantly procced Akarat’s as well.

Only video can tell for sure, and he says he has captured it several times. Time will tell if that was true or not.

are you using Rally perchance instead of prophet?

That was a good question. Definitely Prophet, though.

I expect to have one posted by Sunday, April 30. Time constraints and previous plans and all being the cause of the delay, while I also want to do a bit of explanatory editing. However, could someone explain to me how to post an active link? Whenever I have tried in the past, I always got some message about not being the right member level or some such. I always end up just pasting the url. Not the end of the world, but an active link would be better.

On final note, the matter just took a bit of a turn. Upon closer examination of the video evidence, it looks like certain types of mobs (or perhaps just direct hits from mobs?) are causing this bug while the Squirt’s necklace/shield pylon wearing off merely provide a convenient vehicle for the death blows.

By contrast, all death instances caused by ground effects, proc both of my cheat deaths just fine. Also, the weird thing is that I am not seeing this problem on my other builds. I am not going to speculate further, but simply show you.

Again, stay put till Sunday. Thanks.

The order of operations for Crusader cheat death are

  1. AK Prophet Cheat Death
  2. Follower Cheat Death
  3. Self Cheat Death Skill or item

The spinner mobs might have the ability to pierce through 1 cheat death layer (not a documented feature but something I’ve noticed). That could be it…

I have had several problems with cheat deaths being procced while using an active shield pylon. They occurred last season on the impale/strafe DH most recently. Usually against mobs with some type of reflect.

Have not had any issues with crusader.

Incorrect! Fate’s Lapse triggers before Akkhan’s/Prophet.

Update: I’ll have the video up tonight.

Yup, definitely have to agree with you. Waiting to see that vid, btw.

As promised, below is a video of the mystery death issue. Note, however, as I already noted a couple posts up in this thread, after examining my own video recordings, the matter appears not simply Shield pylon/Squirt’s necklace related, but more obscurely veiled than I initially thought. See for yourselves:

Also, since the cause of the bug is unknown, for everyone’s reference, here is a url to my character profile for the build used in the video:

Devs,

Thank you for looking into and fixing this issue.

Sincerely,

My recommendation is to run the test again while using the indestructible passive. I feel confident that you will see your Fate’s Lapse and Akarat’s Champion icons in the buff bar during the 5 secs that Indestructible is active.

Fate’s Lapse and Akarat’s Champion do not offer any amount of time when you are invulnerable, so if you get hit twice in a row very quickly, you might not even see the icons before you are dead.

Let’s take your deaths and procs one at a time starting with Blighter. This is how my Sader procs as well. First Fate’s Lapse, then Akarat’s Champion, then Indestructible. The same happens on my DH, with Fate’s Lapse procing before Awareness.

Here is the Proc order on my Sader:

For the other 2 deaths, here is what I am seeing:

Your framerate is very slow, and you are using projectiles against a Magewraith. When they start spinning, they are reflecting your own hammers back at you at full damage. When you get hit with many of your own hammers all at once, they are blasting through each of your cheat deaths with each hammer that hits you.

If your framerate were faster, I think you would see the icons when each of your passives proc, but since the screen is only updating every 2-4 frames, you are proccing and then dying before the icons have a chance to show up.

That is what I am seeing happening. Below are the frames leading up to your deaths. Notice how many frames it takes between any movement on the screen for the 2 deaths.

First Death:

Frame 1 - Action
Frame 2 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 3 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 4 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 5 - Action
Frame 6 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 7 - Action
Frame 8 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 9 - Action
Frame 10 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 11 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 12 - Duplicate Frame
Frame 13 - Death

Second Death:

Frame 1 - Action
Frame 2 - Duplicate
Frame 3 - Duplicate
Frame 4 - Duplicate
Frame 5 - Action
Frame 6 - Duplicate
Frame 7 - Duplicate
Frame 8 - Duplicate
Frame 9 - Death

Run the test again with Indestructible active, and you should see both proc icons during the 5 second invulnerable stage of Indestructible.

Just to be clear: When a Magewraith reflects your hammers, you are taking hundreds of billions of damage, and no amount of armor or resistance can withstand that unless you are running Goldwrap.

When you are standing right next to a Magewraith when they start to spin, you are getting hit with MANY hammers all at once, and when Fate’s Lapse procs, all the hammers slow down and hit you over and over again during that split second since they are traveling very slowly through you, until you are dead.

All of that happens in less than a frame, so there are no proc icons to show.

There are some fundamental, basic, logical issues with your nay-saying to my data-set:

  1. Fate’s Lapse isn’t a matter of an icon popping out but a 90% slow-down of all mobs on the entire visible map - for 7 seconds! And that is irrelevant of my dying or surviving the 1-3 frames which you insist are missing. Yet, in my mystery scenarios, the effect of Fate’s Lapse does not kick in at all.

  2. As per your own video, which you should review closer, whenever Akkarat’s/Prophet is breached a special icon indicating that event appears. Such never appears in my cases…which leads into:

  3. After you die, which you should know had you not ended your video before your character died, that icon from my point 2 persists until you renew your AK-Prophet. It’s not a matter of some allegedly skipped frame of video. The icon persists until the entirety of the Akkarat’s cycle is completed or until you renew Akkarat’s. And that leads us to:

  4. When you die, the Akkarat’s active buff is down, else you do not die. In all my special cases the active Akkarat’s status persists until I click the resurrect button. All of this is clearly visible in the video which I made and all other videos from which I did not bother using footage as all that footage is 100% redundant.

  5. We are now 20 posts into this topic and all I have heard is nay-saying. I have provided more and more clarity down to frame-by frame analysis. Yet, all I get after this is yet another half-baked double down on your status quo stance, where your own video pokes a hole in your statement. The game runs at 150 fps, while the recording software at 60 fps. Do you seriously believe that after now nine recorded cases, there genuinely isn’t a single frame of film that supports your story, yet your story is somehow unquestionably true!? At this point, it sounds like some people on this forum are somehow genuinely terrified that Blizzard might actually investigate this.

  6. Since I do not know what is causing the mysterious bug, introducing another skill such as Indestructible, might actually change the conditions which cause the issue. I have no idea how things are coded or what combination of factors is causing the issue.

  7. I have been killed by dune dervishes, sand dwellers, etc. with other crusader builds and have not encountered this issue. It is crystal clear when cheat deaths proc and no mystery video frames are ever missing. I am encountering this quandary on this specific build only.

P.S.

How much damage is considered full? Examine my character’s flail very carefully. See, if you spot anything particular about it.

On that note, I am done here. Blizzard can do their own tests.
