Spirit Barrage - Mechanics Explained

Well, minor mistakes sneaked in here:

  • Phantasms count as pets and deal their damage in a form of ticking DoT instead of directly striking their targets (1 tick per 30 frames ( = 0.5sec ))
  • Pet_attack can crit; DoTs can’t crit
    => Phantasms are pets that can’t crit

  • Some pets scale their attack rate with player’s increased attackspeed (IAS) // some pets don’t scale their attack rate but instead get [ weapon-IAS x all other IAS on gear/paragon/gems/buffs ] as a multiplicator ontop of the damage they deal

Example Type#1| Wizard-Hydra: Counts as pet, IAS scaling with attack rate

Hydra_base_APS x weapon-IAS x other-IAS [ x Tasker_Theo ]
= Scaled_Hydra_APS

Example Type#2 | Necromancer-SkeletalMages: Counts as pet, IAS applied as damage multiplicator
(Except for Tasker_Theo. Tasker_Theo is not affecting player’s IAS, but instead is another multiplicator to the attackspeed of pets - no matter which kind of IAS-scaling taking effect)

SkelMage_base_APS = 2.0 APS

*SkelMage_base_APS x Tasker_Theo_50%
= Scaled_SkelMage_APS = 3.0 APS

SkelMage_Dmg = average_x_amount | ex. IAS rating: 17% | ex. weapon-IAS: 7%

average_x_amount x 1.17 x 1.07 = 1.2519 x average_x_amount
=> damage increased by 25.19%

  • Type#1 is also counting for Gargantuan, Zombie Dogs, Monk Mystic Allies, […]

  • Phantasm though is Type#2

  • DoT damage can’t crit, but instead scales up its ticking values with crit_chance and crit_damage

Example:
Dot tick value: 1000 | 60% crit_chance | 400% crit_damage
Meaning, in theory: On average, 6 out of 10 ticks SHOULD apply critical hits => 6 out of 10 ticks SHOULD deal 5x their normal damage.
4 out of 10 ticks still would deal normal damage ( 1x )

Increased_DoT_Tick_Value = [ (6times x ( 1000dmg x5 ) ) + ( 4times x ( 1000dmg x1 ) ) ] : 10 = [ 30000dmg + 4000dmg ] : 10 = 3400dmg

=> 60% crit_chance and 400% crit_damage would scale up the average ticking value of that DoT from 1000 to 3400 ( x3.4 or “240% increased value on average” )

  • Manitou and (if certain runes are chosen) Spirit Barrage projectiles still can deal critical hits though
  • These critical hits will also be “accumulated” to other attacks, so they simply count as “hit, that stored more damage value for final explosion”
  • the final explosion is not affected by multiplicators
  • the accumulated hits & ticks scale with multiplicators, increasing the damage value of specific hit/tick in the big melting pot of “many, many accumulated numbers”
    => You can’t “crit” on the final explosion, but crit_stats still increase its damage due to higher accumulated amounts

Read the entire topic but unsure of one thing:

How does Bane of the Stricken work with Rift Guardian?

Are you supposed to Spam Spirit Barrage of let it accumulate?

Guessing, we have to spam to activate Stricken Gem.

Can someone answer preferred Strategy on RR?

For GR100+ you spam to stack it, no work around it (after you get a good amount of stacks if guardian is distracted by companion or tends to be immobile for few secs, you can start letting accumulate).

For lower, just put down 3 phantasms and SW, when you exit SW they should be dead.

Bro can u explain me plz when start cast spirit barrage on COE? and when start explod ty

I assume group as COE not used in solo. You want to cast 3 SB in 6oclock physical. Hopefully occy spawns recasrt 3 more and wait till they explode. Most players think you explode them during cold cycle when actually thats when you your building up barber damage so they explode after.

so i have to explode them or i need to w8 till them explode by self?

Please read the first bullet point in my FAQ

I’m still a little bit confused why exactly the damage isn’t different whether you let the phantasms accumulate vs just spamming spirit barrage and forcibly exploding them…so we are saying that either way the amount of damage you do doesn’t change? You can let them spin for a time and then forcibly detonate them, or let them spin their whole duration and have them explode on their own. Or…you can spam spirit barrage and continusly detonate the Phantasms and the damage you do will be the same in either scenario?

I watched Lex’s video for pushing g rifts and it seems to involve more timing then it does spamming:

And then I have someone telling me they can clear up to 128’s just spamming. I’m confused even with this threads explaination.

Sure, you can clear up to a certain point by just spamming. Eventually you will need to use accumulation to take advantage of snapshots, timing Grave Injustice for Spirit Walks, and building up more damage from trash to kill elites.

Some people are trying to just compare DPS between different methods, but you need to account for the other benefits when pushing.

Looking for some information, and as this thread is full of useful info already, thought I’d post here.

Can someone explain to me the advantages of running SB: TSIW and Blood Ritual over SB: Manitou and Rush Of Essence? I’m looking at the Seasonal WD leaderboards and everyone seems to pretty much be running SB: TSIW and Blood Ritual, and I can’t figure out why its any better then SB: Manitou and Rush Of Essence.

Blood Ritual is 20% resource cost reduction, which means toughness from Captain Crimson. Manitou doesn’t do anything for trash clearing, and only speeds up the rift guardian kill slightly.

Thank you! The RCR was the missing piece - just saw the difference in-game on the character sheet. Very cool - appreciate the explanation!

I think no one can explain this. I dont want it to stack. i want to see immediate damage. how do i make it explode every time i cast.

Don’t equip ‘The Barber’

Did you actually think before writting? Read The Barber description more carefully.

Will Tasker & Theo work with this build then?

Also is there any viability to the Well of Souls rune? I did a bit of testing but wasn’t sure if I was doing better or worse.

Thanks for the explanation, Kindran. I am new to this build, but it is massively fun.

One question: If I don’t want to equip The Barber, what do you suggest? I was thinking Voo’s Juicer might be a good alternative, but then I thought, does it really need to be a ceremonial knife? Is there a better alternative?

Hey ! thanks a lot for this nice explainations !

On this point I don’t understand one thing : on single target boss (no adds) I juste spam SB on him, so the dmg don’t really have time to accumulate.
Why sometimes, the boss die when he’s at about 15-20% life left ?
There is no accumulated dmg in this case right ?

One question more : are manitou projectiles make stacks for stricken on boss ? Or it’s just done by the cast of phantasm ? (I know that phantasms ticks don’t stack on the stricken)

Thanks !

When the PTR rolls around, I suspect that we may need to update this thread if the proposed changes are adopted (i.e. not a pet).

As an avid Lon Barber Build player getting the Mundus set was very nice this season and the first that alowed me to complete a GR 100… I find this set very enjoying. I put a topaz in my hat for resource reduction and at the beginning of each pack I spread locusts and follow up with spirit barrage. Sometimes locusts kills the pack before I SB, if it don’t 1 or 2 SB does the trick. Im hoping the pets nerf on SB doesn’t break the set, it is incredibly powerful at the moment so I understand the nerf. I don’t even have any Augments and gems are level 80 and cleared a 100 with 4 mins left…
