I’ve been playing since season 9. Today, I got a Spectrum Sword in Whimsydale for the very first time. Is the Spectrum Sword the rarest object in D3 that can be equipped?
Too bad there are no builds that effectively use two swords. The visual would be awesome if both swords were transmogrified as Spectrum Swords. Too bad, the Rend Barb with swords is so slow. Not worth the time to build the set just to see the visual.
Rainbow things were a joke to jab at the people that felt D3 wasn’t dark enough, so they went overboard in the opposite direction. Rainbow didn’t have quite the same connotations then as it does now.
Many jokes have to be viewed in the context of their times. Some didn’t age well at all.
Whimsydale was the joke to jab at people who felt that D3 was not dark enough and you’re right, rainbow was only peripherally a part of the joke; but only as something a little girl would like, not as a reference to lifestyle.
I’d say that honor probably goes to Griswold’s Worn Edge (blue item, super rare, from Anvil of Fury in Old Ruins). Or maybe Wirt’s Original Leg (blue item transmog from Bishibosh’s Remains in Den of the Fallen, also very rare to find).
The Murlocket drops from a rare monster in the Sewers of Caldeum. Spectrum drops from a Unique Monster in Whimysyshire or Whimsydale. The Sewers of Caldeum is in both adventure Caldeum and journey Caldeum and thus readily accessible. To get to Whimsyshire, you have to craft a staff of Herding. To get to Whimsydale, you have to kill a Rainbow Goblin while the Rainbow Portal is open.
Since a player can access the Sewers of Caldeum readily, it’s likely to be much easier to get a drop of a Murlocket than a drop of a Spectrum sword.
I collected all special xmogs/special items (except the Development Hell swords) in season 32. So the murlocket does still drop, although it took forever.
But once Herding is obtained, whimsyshire is accessible forever, just like those other areas. And since Spectrum drops in both Whimsyshire and Whimsydale, whimsydale isn’t relevant.
Murlocket has just one chance per run, whereas Spectrum can have multiple chances per run. Seems more rare than spectrum.
