Being a 41 year old gamer, I’ve witnessed Diablo from it’s conception (I played on the PS1 with my roommate and it was an amazing / groundbreaking experience.
Diablo 2 came along and improved so many of the features the original had. The amount of replay value was far greater than it’s predecessor and provided me with countless hours of entertainment.
Diablo 3, while somewhat of a disappointment due to appealing more to the casual gamer, still brought a lot of great moments. I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more over time.
Then Diablo Immortal released. I was already leery because it was a mobile game (I installed/played on PC) but decided to give it a fair shake. I was pleasantly surprised with the graphics, presentation, and overall feel. I expected monetization; to think otherwise is simply silly. What I wasn’t expecting was predatory monetization to an extreme I’ve never seen and didn’t think ANY company would try to shove in consumers faces.
I’m deeply, deeply saddened to see my once beloved franchise/company go down this path. For the first time ever, I uninstalled a Diablo game from my computer and will be encouraging everyone in my tiny circle of friends to do the same.
To whomever was involved in these decisions, I don’t know how you sleep at night and you should be ashamed of yourselves.
I will be VERY careful about buying anything your company makes from here on out; you’ve put off a decades-long supporter of your business.
I got to level 44 in D:I and the combination of the paywall and just not very enjoyable gameplay turned me off. This game is a weird combination of paying and unenjoyable grinding.
My thoughts exactly. Either a hefty upfront one-time cost or I’d totally be willing to pay a small monthly subscription – like $4.99/month assuming they add regular content.
First
I was underwhelm by the platform mainly because phones hardware isn’t quite close from PC/Consoles when we think about components performances.
Second
As I’m aware about the video games market, I told myself “Why not? PC/Consoles loses so much popularity and phones will get better, Samsung developed DeX system, it would feel just as if I play on a PC”
I didn’t uninstalled D:I, yet.
But I feel that it will be the case because even though the game itself feels good to play, because:
-I hate with passion the freenium side of it (brainless mouse clicks at the top of it)
-The fact that I’m forced to team up to clear a campaign quest
-The amount of salvaged stuff from D3 (classes, unique monsters such as Ghom, Siege breaker, …)
-The lack of honesty from the game director, as $ if the sole path to power then he lied.
Blizzard still knows how to make a good video game, D:I is an example, but also forgot how it became that big, then again D:I is also an example.
im ranked 70th in solo challenge rift.
100th in Battlegrounds.
and participating in the finals of a tournament tonight(although im unaware of how relevant that is).
Been playing about 3hrs a day.
I paid 5$ for the battle pass.
I think its more a matter of knowing what to target to efficiently optimize yourself, rather than having to pay for anything.
Aside from the 5star gems that noone is going to buy.
