What happened to “No more death squads close to the entrance to a GR.”? I keep getting death squads of mobs close to entrances more frequently. Are you guys trying to get me to hate you, or are you just not giving a shyte about this game anymore?
The good old Entrance Ambush scenario we’ve all come to know and love. Unfortunately, there’s not much to be done about it except hope to carve out a defensible location and fight your way forward. Some maps (especially the Battlefields of Eternity) don’t give you this choice: It’s literally a single path, straight into a swarm of enemies. You’re kind of F&S if that one comes up.
Things like that are strong contributors to my choice to play only softcore. I’ve been killed in the loading screen between floors, before. That alone would have been enough to make the decision for me. The game is absolutely riddled with similar deck-stacking strategies to make sure you have as little chance for success as possible.
I wouldn’t expect much sympathy from the forum users on this, either. You’re not likely to get much more than “git gud” as a response. Personally, I agree with you. Not much to be done about it though.
Nah, they have my sympathy because we all know this to be an issue lol. It’s mainly worse on GG maps like festering woods because they are the maps you want, and of course you have to be jumped on as soon as you walk through the door lol.
They did patch it as it was even worse before, but yeah. I don’t think they will change it again to make it better. It’s just one of those /sigh moments when it happens
Use a bit of defense in your build instead of going glass canon.
…or skip the pack.
That’s about the size of it, yeah. I don’t like it any more than I like being Vortexed directly into a giant s-storm of Arcane, then Jailed there and being stuck waiting for a legitimately unavoidable death.
Someone should have a sit down with these people and explain, very carefully and very slowly, that there is a difference between legitimate difficulty and designing the game to cheat every chance it gets.
This is what I hate the most. It’s part of the reason why playing Necro, WD and non-Archon wizards sucks so much. They don’t have a CC immunity from their ultimate form and getting knocked/moved around sucks so much.
I know the teleport happens to CC immune builds, but I meant more like jailer, Knockback, and etc that you mentioned lol
There’s always a way around those affixes; you just have to be willing to sacrifice a gem or item slot for it. I don’t know how others are building their Wizards, but I can’t sacrifice a bracer slot for Krelm, and I need all three gems to keep up my damage output. Immunity to these affixes simply isn’t an option for me; not for that class, anyway.
This is one of the reasons I like PoJ Tempest Rush. Epiphany makes you immune to those effects and you can keep it up indefinitely. The Demon Hunter uses Vengeance in almost every build, so they’re covered. Even my Witch Doctor has at least some defense against that situation (Spirit Walk), but the Wizard? Simply F&S.
And I know I’ll earn my tinfoil hat for saying it, but I don’t care: These elites are programmed to do exactly what I described above. They’re timing their Vortex to maximize the chances to kill you outright. I’ve even seen it happen right at the edge of a killshot on an elite with Molten. Good thing my shields are strong.
Six blues and a yellow. Been there done that.
Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whippin’ post.
Tied to the whippin’ post, tied to the whippin’ post.
Good Lord, I feel like I’m dyin’.
Tanky builds that have conditional defensive buffs can still have big problems with fast-attacking packs by doors. Especially when they have a cheat death that doesn’t grant immunity.
E.g. Vyr’s with Karini is one of the tankiest builds in the game. But when you walk into a rift that’s packed at the door, sometimes you don’t have time to get Storm Armor up, get a Karini proc, and activate Archon. And your cheat death doesn’t grant immunity, and it’s pretty easy to get one-shot through the Unstable Anomaly shield if you don’t have your buffs up yet.
My last few HC wizards have all died to packs of Soul Lashers just inside the door of a GR. You enter the GR, move to activate your buffs and trigger aggro, and get immediately licked by a couple of slightly staggered soul lashers before your buffs activate. The first one pops UA, the second one one-shots you through the UA shield. It happens in a fraction of a second, and you literally don’t have time to react or get your toughness buffs active. You’re just dead as soon as you move and trigger aggro. If I had more than a fraction of a second to react there, I would have had about 30x the toughness (Karini up gives 5x toughness, Archon activation gives another ~5-6x toughness even with just 50 stacks). Vyr’s is an incredibly tanky build, but you are about 30x squishier for the first second of a rift. You need that first second to get your defensive buffs up. If you get attacked and killed in 0.4 seconds, there’s not much you can do. I literally walked into the rift and died. It’s not super common, you need the right type of mob or the right elite affixes positioned right at the door, but it happens enough that it’s a problem. It’s happened to me multiple times.
Vyr’s isn’t the only example like this, there are other builds too that have conditional toughness bonuses that take a second or two to activate. Aggressive mobs packed at a door can attack you much faster than that.
EDIT:
Here’s an old video that might help illustrate. Lacuni Stalkers are another mob type that can cause problems like this. If you have conditional toughness buffs, sometimes you simply don’t have time to activate them.
It’s pretty much been throwing cheap meat at the starving fanbois for the past few years now. Some efforts were made but not really. D3 efforts are just enough to string us along till Immortal and D4. They have the money to do it right but they clearly lack the will or effort.
