Sanctifying a Primal Ancient

I may have made a mistake and I wanted to ask here to be sure it wasn’t (or, if it was indeed a mistake). I did my first GR70 solo, and got my first Primal Ancient. It was the Shoulders for Wrath of the Wastes (which I happened to be using).

So, pretty happy and the Stats were basically what I needed on it. But I haven’t played D3 in a while and some details of the end-game (for a Season) escaped me. I eventually got that new Sanctifying item drop.

Since that Primal Ancient was my best equipped item I decided to give a try to that consumable to ‘upgrade’ it and end up with one of the new powers provided by it.

Now, unless I’m mistaken, I think that it did two things (but I’m not 100% sure about it hence why I’m asking here):

  1. It reset most (if not all?) the Stats that initially were present on the Shoulders when I first Identified it (I.E. after ID’ed, it had specific Stats, but after I Sanctified it, all the Stats got reset and some of them were different afterwards by comparison, for example I had Resistances All after ID’ed, but that Stat was replaced by Replenish Life after Sanctification was done).

The main question for this first point is: Is Sanctifying an item actually supposed to reset all the stats of an item and generate new ones entirely? Or is the Stats reset portion of Sanctification actually a random thing on its own and isn’t always happening?

  1. Did I “lose” some Stats points?

I’m asking this because I actually can’t even recall what were my Prime Ancients Stats amount for Strength and Vitality, Versus how it is now after I Sanctified it. If I recall correctly, ‘regular’ Ancient items and Primal Ancient items both have the same Maximum Stat points, correct?

Because I’m wondering if going from Primal Ancient to ‘Sanctified’ Primal Ancient basically reduced Stats to a ‘regular’ Ancient item, or if I don’t have to worry about that because it has basically the same total Maximum Stats I had before I Sanctified it.

Just need some clarifications on these subjects please. Not playing a Season for about 2 years made me forget a bunch of details.

Thank you guys.

For your first question, yes the stats of any item you sanctify gets rerolled/reforged. So if you find any good ancients or primal ancients that you would want to keep, avoid sanctifying them as not only would their stats reroll, but you won’t be able to keep them after the season ends (it’s unlikely that they’ll simply turn into normal ancients/primal ancients).

For your second question, in terms of stat potential, you didn’t lose any stat points by going from ancient/primal ancient to sanctified, as they have the same maximum stat potential.

The patch notes have more details:

Season 27 introduces a new type of consumable item called Angelic Crucibles. Once uncovered by Nephalem, these heavenly artifacts can be used to Sanctify any equippable Legendary item. Sanctifying an item reforges it to have perfect Ancient-level stats on all affixes while also preserving the item’s Legendary Power. In addition, this process adds one of three new powers unique to each class.

Season Theme Details:

  • Angelic Crucibles and Sanctified items can only be acquired in Seasonal play and will not transfer to your non-seasonal character when the season ends.
  • Angelic Crucibles can drop anywhere in Sanctuary at level 70.
  • Players can obtain as many Sanctified items as they would like, however, only one Sanctified item can be equipped at a time.
  • Sanctified items can be Sanctified again using another Angelic Crucible.
  • No stats are preserved when Sanctifying an item.
  • Only level 70 equippable items can be Sanctified—crafted items cannot be Sanctified.
  • Followers cannot equip Sanctified items.

This was a painful one read. Never sanctify a primal.

Yupp. You F-ed up. That’s why you read the patch notes carefully.

It gets better, the item will be deleted after the season also.

Fortunately, the rift where I was grinding keys for GRs (at that time it was T11) I got a Yang’s along with a crucible, all in one run. I immediately sanctified it, as it was a really crappy version. Next run got another crucible, hit it again, but didn’t change much. Certainly didn’t get the Vengeance power yet. (I’m assuming the powers are random like the stat assignments). It was funny, I hit it again, but none of the stats changed, except it went from lightning to cold. That was ALL that changed. lol

I was like… What?

Anyway, yeah, don’t use it on a primal, use it on a trash version of whatever item you want to use.

Good luck.

Not if they reforge it, it gets un-sanctified. Though it can go to normal version, but atleast they don’t have to farm the item again in NS. Unless they delete all characters after seson, then it doesn’t matter.

Thanks guys for the clarifications.

A few notes (speaking for myself here):

  1. I don’t mind much regarding the ‘loss’ of the Primal after the Season, since I haven’t played Off-Season since basically Season 1 started. I skipped a few Seasons here and there, but the last time I played the game outside of a Season was essentially when Seasons didn’t exist yet.

  2. If I didn’t lose Stat points then I think all this ‘mistake’ ultimately isn’t so bad in the end.

I’ll avoid Sanctifying a Primal Ancient next time (if I do need it, that is) but my Sanctified Shoulders right now should serve their purpose well enough then. It’s not as bad as I thought it might have been (I.E. losing Stats).

Alright so, ty again guys, case closed for me.

Ideally, sanctify anything with a variable leg power figure to ensure it rolls maxed or sanctify a weapon for max weapon damage.

But as you say, it’s not the end of the world. Having fun is the important thing.

Ouch. Painful dude. But not the end of the world. You’ll find another one some day :slightly_smiling_face:
