Running D3 on a cloud gaming service

I tested running D3 on Nvidia GeForce Now on an ancient business laptop specs : Dual core Intel Core2 with Intel integrated graphics , IDE drive non SSD , that was getting 7-10 FPS on low settings .
Compare with Geforce Now on the same laptop, getting consistent 60 - 80 fps on High settings .
This solution is pretty good if you dont want to upgrade your hardware aka buying a new Freesync monitor, upgrading new GPU , CPU or SSD .
So basically you are trading your upfront cost of hardware to paying monthly service
FYI : GEforce Now service has a free service to test on your hardware and it supports D3 , unlike Google Stadia

You may wish to review the Blizzard EULA.

License Limitations. Blizzard may suspend or revoke your license to use the Platform, or parts, components and/or single features thereof, if you violate, or assist others in violating, the license limitations set forth below. You agree that you will not, in whole or in part or under any circumstances, do the following:

v. Cloud Computing: Use the Platform, including a Game, in connection with any unauthorized third-party “cloud computing” services, “cloud gaming” services, or any software or service designed to enable the unauthorized streaming or transmission of Game content from a third-party server to any device.

Are you sure ? Then Blizzard needs to tell Nvidia that Diablo 3 is not supported in the GeForce Now platform ,
In the Nvidia GeForce Now link for supported games
It clearly stated that Diablo 3 is supported by Nvidia . So somehow Blizzard and Nvidia has agreed to support D3 on GeForce Now

So, I went to the GeForce Now page NVIDIA GeForce NOW and under the Games search box I typed Diablo 3. It says

Game is currently not supported on GeForce NOW. Request to add game.

So, based on the current website for GeForce Now, your statement is not accurate.

Try typing Diablo III and see the result on that Nvidia GeForce web page . I have a screenshot on the result , but can not find a way to post in forum

Yes, there is no such game as “Diablo 3”. Type Diablo and it shows “Diablo III” as supported.

That’s still only nVidia’s side of the story. They may base their decision entirely on hardware capability without examining permissions.

Hmm… Ok you win. They do show it as supported. I also see you have to own the games in order to play them on that platform. Maybe that is part of it? I know Blizz is very IP protective.

I have not seen any official statements by Blizzard regarding authorized platforms. I don’t think Nvidia would just do that without checking.

So, good question then. Are there any platforms Blizz HAS authorized?

You need to be TL2 to post links to imagure??? (I dont know it)

Workaround:

  1. Paste link
  2. highlight it
  3. Click the <> button

Welp , it looks like Nvidia and Blizzard has make an agreement and based on your TOS , GEforce Now is an “approved” cloud gaming platforms, unlike Google Stadia , Its hard to believe a company like Nvidia can just put Diablo III as an approved game with out asking permission to the owner of the game

There are definitely a lot of threads about people getting banned for playing Blizzard games on the service. A Google search turns up a lot of discussion about some getting banned and some playing for months with no sign of a ban. There was also one thread I saw that mentioned that the bans may have had to do with Blizzard’s anti-cheat software not recognizing the environment and then getting patched to deal with it, but it all felt like speculation.

Also, I don’t see any reason for Blizzard not to mention anywhere that they have approved GeForce Now if they indeed have allowed it. The silence on the Blizzard front would give me pause.

Yeah, if they approved it then I am sure players would like to know that! Most people don’t want to risk an account ban.

FYI : when I ran the cloud based D3 on Geforce Now , I also noticed that the I dont have to install any local D3 instance on my old ancient laptop , the actual client D3 is already preinstalled on a virtual D drive that points to Nvidia cloud storage aka D:\asgard… . But it does puil my Bnet accounts and ask me to login with my Bnet credentials to verify that I am licensed to play D3 natively .
This is another pointer that somehow Blizzard and Nvidia has made an agreement , so Nvidia can preinstalled D3 on their cloud servers without violating copyrights agreement

Hmmm, Kotick seems to be on board with the concept…

apparently Diablo 3 (Diablo III) employees and their flunky’s would like to know it too !

Activision asked nVidia to remove Blizzard games from GeForce Now (11 Feb 2020).

You’d think they would embrace this type of play through an official resonsible channel - it’s hard to hack and cheat when the game binary is administered in a supervised cloud environment.

Hopefully this means they are starting to negotiate official terms and the first step was to assert that they have the right to pull their games. I can’t imagine they could negotiate while nVidia was serving the games unofficially.

Perhaps… and start negotiations with a clean slate…

I played with Geforce Now a bit on some other games and I’m actually pretty impressed with the quality considering you could play it on a 20 year old computer if you could get it with W10 and 4GB ram. Also being able to play games I already own makes it quite interesting if I didn’t have a decent PC already. Thanks for the test and info TC.
