Question about the Altar of Rites

If the townsfolk from Tristram found the alter in the Festering Woods and are afraid of it, how did it end up in Tristram? We have been running around in the Festering Woods for ten years and have never come across it. Also, does the current lore make any reference to this type of an altar, one that would give a person special power after presenting some type of an offering?

Guess we will find it out in seson?

My guess is that they either brought it in Tristram before becoming unnerved by the altar or once during their hunting expedition when they found the altar in the ruins, they unknowingly/unwillingly activated it which followed the people back to tristram which caused further reason of fear for the people of Tristram, as the altar then seems either invulnerable to them and/or continually returns no matter what they do to it.

True, however the area in the game that we explored in the game isn’t likely the entirety of the Festering Woods. For example, there’s a large hole within the Festering Woods that seems to lead further within it, however it’s inaccessible to us to explore in-game. I’m guessing that’s where the Tristram’s hunting expedition had went and found the altar.

That’s what I’m looking forward to the most in all honesty, especially the lore tidbits that we’ll learn upon activating the powers.

Lore stipulates that adventures and treasure hunters came to lands after D2 looking for lost loot.
New Tristram was founded my merchants servicing them.
Its very possible its just something some archeologists or tomb robbers looted looking to sell for some gold.
