Question about Grift levels

I’ve always assumed that the difficulty increased steadily as the GR level got higher, e.g. if lvl2 is 5% tougher than lvl1, then lvl3 is 5% tougher than 2, etc., etc., etc… But it seems that I can advance through several levels and the difficulty advances slowly, then I get to the next level, and it’s like the difficulty doubles.

Right now, I can do GR95 without any problems. I mean, it’s a challenge, but I never die and I rarely come close. But if I bump it up to 97, it seems like I’m constantly hanging on by the skin of my teeth. I’ve probably done it 5 times and have died at least once in each attempt.

Did I pass over a major threshold going to 97?

Please don’t look at my profile. I am NOT looking for help with my build. I just want an answer to that question. Is there a big jump, or am I simply imagining it?

No.

Monster HP increases at 17% per GR level, and it’s cumulative. So, as an example, by going up 10 GR levels, the monster HP goes up by (1.17)^10 = 4.8068, i.e. you need to do almost five times as much damage.

You need approximately 37% more damage to complete a GR97 than a GR95.

Fair enough, but the problem is due to your build.

…takes a peek at build… Oh… walks away whistling softly.

The problem that I think that there is a big difference between some levels? Why? So if I fixed these problems, I’d also notice a big difference between 93-95 where I don’t see one now?

You have an explanation and a couple of good links in the previous answers that go over GR scaling. No matter your gear and skills setup, you are going to get to a spot where at one GR it seems almost easy peasy and 2 GR’s higher is a super mess. For you, with your gear, that GR level is 93 to 95. For other S6’s with your paragon that level may be 105 to 107. The difference is in the gear worn and skills selected.

Yes, and I definitely appreciate that. It’s just that it seems that no matter what the question is, there is always a faction of people that ignore the question and focus on telling you how hard you suck. It’d be one thing if I ask why I’m having so much trouble with GR97. I’m not. I know what needs to be done with my build. I’ll handle that aspect of the game on my own.

In case you missed it when I answered your question, when you asked if there was a big bump…

There will always come a point where that 17% HP increase per GR level overwhelms the amount of damage your hero can output. The reason you’ve reached that at GR97 is due to your gearing choices.

The other thing to consider is the RNG of GRs in terms of map, density and mob types.

I can do a 95 in 3-3.5 min most of the time on my UE DH, but there are some times I’m in the 5 min range because of shizzy mobs (succubi spraying orbs, mortar lobbing lacunis, fatties, etc) that mean a lot more repositioning (since I can’t stutter step) or a bunch of jug champs that take more time to bring down, or even an RG like Hamelin if I get stuck in the bubble…sometimes you get a Festering/desert map which is easy, but 2-3 levels of Keeps/Corvis types and you spend more time opening doors and killing small mobs instead of big ones.

For me right now, I can do 109 (wow, I’m so OP) but when I jump into a 110, I usually get wrecked and fall so far behind the timer I bail.

PS - most folks in this forum won’t tell you you suck but try to give help based on available information including build, which is a pretty important factor on progressing to higher rifts. You might find a couple of tweaks that mean instead of 97 being a “cap” for you, it’s 100…

Yeah, I guess that’s true. It’s funny. I can play the levels up to that and I have no trouble, but can’t see much of a difference. I tried 96 and that’s still challenging, but still relatively not an issue, especially from a survivability standpoint. I can go toe-to-toe with all of them and I’m never really in trouble. But it takes longer to bring them down and I finish with only a couple of minutes left. Then I play 97 and get my a$$ handed to me. Oh well. I know what I have to work on.

I looked at your profile. Certainly not going to tell you you’re doing anything wrong, just that the issue you’re experiencing has a lot to do with the fact that you’re playing an Impale build.

Impale is a high single target damage build, and these sorts of builds have a much steeper “damage wall” than other builds that can deal more aoe and leverage AD + mob density better.

In other words, with Impale, you tear through GR levels quite easily up to a point, and then it pretty suddenly becomes hard, and then impossible, within the span of only a few tiers.

It’s the same with all single-target-focused builds, for instance the new H90 Frenzy Barb.

On the plus side, adding mainstat via augments and paragon will make those “impossible” clears just “hard” and those “hard” clears “easy” more directly than if you were playing an aoe build.

Hey, what did I tell you???

But that is some good information. I guess it is what it is. I don’t know if I have the energy to start and learn a new build. I generally get in and play Diablo for a while and then kind of hit the wall, yet again coming to the realization that improving myself to a point that I can clear higher Grifts will offer nothing different than any of the previous ones. I’m starting to approach that. And the weather is starting to get nicer.
