Private game means private!

Now I’ll admit I don’t know if it’s a slowdown with the D-3 server or what, but more than once today I’ve tried to play a private session of the game to deal with some stuff, (like raising GR Level, outfitting hirelings, that old enchilada); so tapped the ‘private game’ option.

Didn’t realize that went out the window when I decided to better myself and went into a rift. Next thing I know, someone else shows up, beats the rift before I could fully explore/ loot/ slay monsters (that old enchilada).

Give me them good-old-days when if ya wanted to team-up with other players; ya played ‘public’ and it stood as an actual opposite option to playing ‘private’. Guess that option no longer exists.

Do you have quick join option checked or unchecked? If quick join is active, anyone on your friends list can join your game

Private games are private. Nobody should be able to join your game if you have your settings enabled correctly.

First make SURE you don’t have it set to Public Game.

Second go into the Options settings and do what DarkKnight said - turn off Quick Join. That lets people on your friends list jump into your games without an invite. Great for when you already had planned to play with someone, but not so nice when you really want to do your own thing.

If you have issues finding the Quick Join setting to disable it, feel free to ask.

It certainly does exist. As others above noted, check your settings. I’ve played since day 1 and have never had this problem.

Untick this…

If one is not interested in grouping, I’d also disable the Players near you option as well. Keeps them out of the friends list’s “Recent players” area. Less muss, no headaches.

Well “Players near you” need to be on the same local subnet as you are, i.e. they’re probably in your house so if you don’t want to play with them, just yell at them and tell them to get lost.

I’ve had players near me trigger players to show up in my list if they were geographically near me, not just in my house. That’s why I shut it off. It appears that your IP is geomapped on the Blizzard side (easy to do with tools from Google Analytics), and is compared to other IPs matching that geographical profile.

Of course, even if they show up, it doesn’t mean they can auto-join your games.

Not sure what you are talking about private works I use it all the time
