“They call me a hero. I slew demons beyond count. I won battles and broke sieges, that avail me nothing. I know that this war can have no victor, only an eternity of revenge, pride, and hatred. Tyrael does not understand. He cannot see beyond the glory of battle. In time, he may. But that day is not yet here.”
“But what of my great deeds? When I am in torment, who will celebrate those? Who will remember…Inarius?” — Inarius’s fears, long prior to his incarceration.
If he was freed from his torment, would he regain his natural abilities back, or is he so far gone that he could never recover? Do you think he would function on his own or would he try to return to the high heavens? Would they let him back in? Would he join forces with his wife or would he go after her father for the years of torment?
I am not sure why but he is the most interesting person in the lore for me. If he was at full power (prior to his defection) could he defeat Mephisto one-on-one?
Before the creation of Sanctuary, Inarius was a powerful angel, stronger than most, and only second to the Angiris Council (in short he was weaker than Tyrael, Imperius, etc.). After the creation of the Sanctuary, and with him using the Worldstone to strengthen his powers, Inarius became one of the most powerful beings. After Uldyssian severed Inarius’s link to the Worldstone, Inarius lost his amplified strength, his powers going back to what it was prior to Sanctuary’s creation.
It depends on whether or not, he suffered corruption akin and/or worse to Izual. If Inarius had been corrupted beyond redemption, then there’d be almost no way for him to regain his natural abilities, nor would he be welcomed back into the High Heavens (hell it’d be less likely that he’d even want to return).
Also, I’m not sure if he’d rejoined Lilith, as her plan to weaponize the Nephalem is likely still in motion, while Inarius most likely is still traumatized by the events of the sin wars and only see them as abominations. He could go after Mephisto, but it’ll likely end in a horrific defeat for Inarius, as Mephisto is no doubt more stronger than Inarius.
I’ve said before, but the only way I can see Inarius coming back (in Diablo 4 at least), is if he had someone to assist him, because on his own, he doesn’t have much going for him. Now if he joins forces with someone, that’d be a different scenario altogether. Either way, I’m interested to see how things will play out.
During the Great Conflict Inarius served as an advisor to the Angiris Council, serving under the command of Tyrael. He was highly regarded by his kin for his successes on the battlefield. He faced the Lesser Evil Azmodan in battle on at least one occasion (Sword of Justice). - Diablo Wiki
However considering that Inarius was still around, we can at least surmise that he survived his battle against Azmodan (which is an accomplishment in itself). It likely ended in a stalemate, and/or their battle was interrupted by the arrival of one’s sides reinforcements which forced the opposing side to retreat.
