It opens in a new tab for me. Your browser is configured incorrectly.
Not “incorrectly”. Just different.
I can Ctrl+click or mouse-wheel click your image to open it in a new tab.
So can I. You do not have the open links in a new tab setting enabled, otherwise it would open in a new tab.
Yes, I know. It’s a preference.
My point is, this:
<div align="center">
https://i.imgur.com/vK0EuDs.jpg
</div>
takes less typing than this:
<div align="center">
<a href=https://i.imgur.com/vK0EuDs.jpg> <img src=https://i.imgur.com/vK0EuDs.jpg></a>
</div>
and essentially has the same results… depending on your browser settings.
I can click on mine and it automatically opens in a new tab. With yours, I have to control-click to open it in a new tab. (Because of my browser preferences).
Just checking (“Click to Enlarge” Images)
Syntax
<div align="center">

Well… it works. But, instead of opening in an overlay window on the same webpage, it opens in a new tab. (Will try some other things shortly).
Syntax
<div align="center">
[img="Click to enlarge"]https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpg[/img]
</div>
Produces
What about just
[img="Click to enlarge"]https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpg[/img]
To get
Or
<img src="https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpg" alt="Click to enlarge">
Gets
And finally
![Click to enlarge](https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpg)
Produces
I give up.
By the way, the last three tries came directly from our New Forum Guide, under “Post Images and Embedded Content”.
Yeah, in the thread I made about this, the change to embedded image functionality occurred when a forum software update happened, I think. Unsurprisingly, didn’t get a response to it from Blizzard as to whether it’s a fault, or an intentional change. It’s also a change that isn’t retro-active. I have images embedded in older threads that will still maximise, and if I embed that way now, they don’t work, using exactly the same syntax as used in the old threads.
Lumpy mashed potato code consistency FTW!
Hi:
Something is weird… when you use the .jpg extension and click on the resulting picture, it gets translated to imgur “Image link” version… ie, a minitature that needs to be clicked on to expand it to full size.
If you use a .jpeg extension, you get a fully maximized picture when you click on it.
https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpeg
but the ![](https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpg "Click to enlarge")
is still broken…
too bad… I liked that feature.
I got taken to imgur with the small version, needing to click it on the imgur site to enlarge it, on both of these embedded images, i.e. JPG or JPEG.
hmmm… that’s odd…
Browser dependent ??? who knows…
Me too. Using your JPG as an example, I now have to type:
<div align="center">
https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpg
</div>
Which produces this:
You should be able to click on it and it will open a larger view of it in a new tab.
When I clicked on that image I was taken to the holding page on imgur…
https://imgur.com/F4Zqhya
In other words, I was not taken to the underlying image URL of…
https://i.imgur.com/F4Zqhya.jpeg
I’m using Chrome Version 92.0.4515.159 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Same here… also Chrome Version 92.0.4515.159 (Official Build) (64-bit) (in French, naturellement)
and Perusoe’s image also brings me to https://imgur.com/F4Zqhya
.
I’m starting to have a headache…
How the pcitures are handled when clicking on them is determined by the combination of browser, configuration settings, and image hosting links.
This is expected behaviour. If you want to link to imgur, you must use the direct link, not the page link.
As for Boubou’s pic, that’s an imgur issue, not a Discourse issue. It’s how they handle JPEG images. It isn’t an issue with PNG or any of the other accepted formats there, just JPEG.
Okay. I’m using Firefox. I also used Boubou’s URL for the example.
Let’s try a direct link to one of my old images.
Syntax used:
<div align="center">
https://i.imgur.com/R94Ii3n.jpg
</div>
Produces this:
What happens when you click on the image above?

Thanks, TheTias for the clarification.
Test:
<div align="center">
![](https://i.imgur.com/R94Ii3n.jpg "Click to enlarge")</div>
That works just for static embeds now it seems. Lemme try your modified code:
<div align="center">
https://i.imgur.com/R94Ii3n.jpg
</div>
Edit: Yep, it’s taking to the page, not the direct image. It’s an imgur issue for sure.

Hmm…
I tried to see if I might have something in my Firefox browser settings that is allowing me to click on an image and have it open in a new tab. I can’t really see anything that would affect it.
In Firefox Settings, on the General page, I have:
Tabs
☐ Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order
Open links in tabs instead of new windows
When you open a link, image or media in a new tab, switch to it immediately
Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar
But, I don’t see anything that would differentiate between an image page and the image’s direct link.
What happens if you Ctrl-click on the image?
I still get the page, not the direct picture via CTRL/CMD clicking the image. It’s on imgur’s end.
Edit: Safari works as expected with CMD-click. So perhaps it *is* a browser issue after all.
