Pausing the game

FYI I have found the reason why the game sometimes does not pause when playing solo.

In multiplayer it never pauses and in solo it should always pause when you bring up the map etc but sometimes in solo it fails to pause.

It occurs when the game is loading in the map/assets and it has to finish that before the pause works.

In GR’s when I enter a new floor with density the game starts to lag as the game engine calculates things and the pause never works until it has finished loading.

Useless info for sure but at least I now know what causes it and can then be ready for it if I want to pause.

It’s another HC killer.

hmm interesting. i know i’ve seen in the past people complaining about the game not “pausing” for solo when i’ve seen it pause… that would explain why it doesn’t actually pause in a solo game.

Yah it happens from time to time… I think it also happens once in awhile in a big open map with lots density and lots of “things going on” (vile swarms stacking up, exploders, area damage, Flying dragon proc’ing ect.)

Yeah…the calculations in all of that takes priority over the pausing it seems…

Makes sense, good to know conditions behind it when it happens.

I’ve developed the habit of checking for pause when i need it.

I’ve never had it not pause when I pressed the pause button, even when entering a GR and assets are loading.

What is driving me crazy is the game load time - it’s 30+ seconds for me. This is an issue cos I don’t leave my PS4 on 24/7 and it gets turned off when I’m not using it, or overnight etc (fire safety issue, basic stuff).

I have noticed the sluggishness on initial game load, or when loading a GR with a big open area and heavy mob density. The Weeping hollow (bounty map, not rift/GR map) does this with near 100% consistency. Lag, sluggishness and rubberbanding for at least 5 seconds after entering the area.

s21/s22, have, at least for me personally, been much better with rubber banding and lag than prior seasons. I swear game load time has worsened though. It’s only 30 seconds, but crikey, it’s annoying.

A big issue is elites near the entrance to a GR - it ain’t fun when pushing a GR and you don’t have NG and there’s 2 or 3 elite packs right next to the entrance that hammer you immediately. I had an elite and champ pack do this on a GR118 last night, and an elite and 2 champs packs on Thursday night (was only a 114, so not so bad I guess). Blizzard supposedly fixed this a few years back, but I call bull.

Nick - I wonder if load times and the pause button issue are non-existent on the PS5, which is much more powerful I/O wise than the PS4. Does anyone on here have a PS5 to test with? I’d be curious to see if the game still performs like a dog…if it does, that tells me it’s VERY BAD coding and not the platform. I’m putting my money on it being very bad coding BTW.

I get the pause issue too, and possibly under some additional conditions. I haven’t noticed what they are yet.

I get this on xBox One S too occasionally. The pets are fighting mobs before my screen has rendered.

The One S is the newer XBOX unit isn’t it, with the SSD (as opposed to the original XBOX One, which had a normal drive). Correct?

I suspect the new XBOX X/PS5 will not make a difference, since games have to have their code optimised to take advantage of the improved I/O throughput. This would probably require a re-write of the entire console port…I can’t see Blizzard fixing it. It may also be a GPU related issue - where the graphics rendering kills the last gen consoles (bottlenecks). I don’t know how the newer gen GPUs deal with the graphical requirements of D3 since I do not have a current gen console to test. I also had some suspicions that the last gen consoles had CPU issues due to the large number or RNG seeds in the game. Again, the current gen consoles’ CPUs should eliminate this if it is part of the problem - they are many more times more powerful than the last gen CPUs.

I just found this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo3/comments/jsr8bn/diablo_3_on_ps5/

where user “Ineffective8465” says:

“It is far better than the PS4 pro with SSD version. The resolution is almost always at 4K, frame rates are smooth and load times are instant. It looks better than my gaming PC, though that might have something to do with my tv.”

this would suggest that the game code for the last gen console ports was not very well optimised. I find that amusing, since I would say that The Witcher 3 runs far better than Diablo 3 for me and it’s a far more graphically intensive game…

edit: rather disturbing, is that I am reading that any physically purchased games (which is how I buy my PS4 games) need to be re-purchased for the PS5. That’s criminal. Outright criminal and more reason to not support Sony and the PS5.

Yeah the few I’ve talked to say the load times are much, much faster on PS5…

The Elites fighting you before he screen has loaded at the start of a GR is a killer in HC…I’ve procced a few times because of it…instant back out.

One S is Gen3. You may be thinking of the recent Series S, Gen4.

I have no idea, XBOX has the crappiest naming convention ever lol…confusing AF.

In theory, the PS4 pro should be much better too, since it also uses a SSD. But, my guess is that RAM/GPU and CPU also make a big difference in the games performance. I never thought of D3 being a graphically or CPU intensive game…it shouldn’t be, given how simple it is.

I referenced wiki’s xbox page. There’s a straight forward table there.

The fact that Area Damage is dropped by PC players or Console 4 man GR150 players because the game lags badly when trying to calculate it reveals there is a lot of math going on calculating damage thus I’m not surprised CPU is taxed.

where did you see this at?

What do you mean as that is not true, but kind of.

D3 UEE came out on PS3 and PS4 and you had to buy both.

On PS5 you pop in a physical disc for a PS4 game and 99.9% of them will work and take advantage of the PS5 GameBoost mode.

Newer games that have been developed may have a PS4 version and a PS5 version boxed…if that is the case the developers are releasing patches for the PS4 version to enhance it on PS5 so you don’t need to buy the PS5 version…God of War patch for this comes out today and Spiderman, Cyberpunk etc all will have this patch.

But yes if you wanted a PS5 boxed version of a game on the PS4 you have to buy it just like we had to buy D3 on PS3 and PS4…

The difference the PS5 has is it can play 99% of the PS4 games with no cash involved and a lot of new PS4 games are getting a PS5 specific patch.

So I’m not sure what Dave is on about here.

If a company released a game on the PS4 and it doesn’t work with backwards compatability on the PS5 then made a PS5 version then yes you would need to buy the PS5 version but as I say most devs are patching the PS4 version with a PS5 specific patch to make the PS4 version running on the PS5 be like the boxed PS5 version of the game…and 99% of PS4 titles work on PS5.

yeah, i’ve been saying the RNG in D3 taxes the older gen consoles very heavily. If so, that’s very bad programming imho and a clear warning that there’s way too much RNG in D3. More RNG does not make a better game.

spotted it on a reddit post this morning, but can’t find it now.

Someone mentioned it on a reddit post that I was looking at this morning, can’t find it now grrr. Don’t know if it’s true or not, but considering the need for a new controller for any “PS5” games (PS4 dual shock controller will work for older PS4 games on the PS5 apparently), and considering no save to USB anymore on the PS5, hell, they haven’t even unlocked the NVME slot yet apparently, I wouldn’t touch a PS5 if you paid me. Sorry, not sorry.

edit: did I mention the PS5 is damn ugly as hell. One of the ugliest designs I’ve ever seen for a product as an adult consumer of 33 odd years…

Yup indeed  It sure is!

pffft! double pffft! and triple pffft!

Ok so here is a video on the issue.

This is me just getting into my first GR of the day, a speed GR124 and it is Keep Depths so the game has not loaded much into memory…you can tell by the amount of time taken to get into the GR with you looking at the purple portal waiting…

I go into it and a few rooms into Keeps I encounter a Rare which I take down but notice the orbs dropping from him is quite slow as the game is lagging real bad at this point (it is more noticeable playing than watching) so I bring up the map and as you can see the game carries on and I’m getting attacked.

I wait a few seconds and the lag is gone, the game has loaded things into memory and I pause the game again via bringing up the map and this time it does pause the game.

This is solo as I have my follower…bring up the map or pressing Option button pauses the game but both ways to pause has this issue where if the game is calculating it fails to pause.

It is a HC killer for sure.
