edit: deleted my last post to not necro the thread. sadly, this didn’t re-bury the thread and it’s still necro-ed. please lock.
OG D2 looks dark but with very high contrast and deep colors. D2R for me look incredibly washed out like everything has a white grey coat over it no matter my brightness settings. Other games on my machine / screen are fine. Anyone else notice this or a way to solve this?
No, you are not. I also provided similar feedback during Alpha. It feels like the game lost all the contrast. I get the realistic and gritty feeling that they wanted, but so much stuff blends in!
They did change some of the icon and gems and such, but a bit more could be done.
There is the article on it and some of the graphics tweaks that were done.
I thought all the complaints were the usual internet drama, but it’s a legitimate issue. By toggling between new and old, you see a difference like night and day (literally). And after 11 or so years, I finally understood what Jay Wilson meant when he said that Diablo II was a “bright game”. Yes, it was a bright game, but it still had a dark atmosphere. Something Diablo III completely fails at (except a few spots in the expansion).
Throughout the Technical Alpha the community was incredible in sharing their feedback, bugs, and other insights from their experience throughout that test. Please share your impressions as we continue to polish the game while upholding the authenticity of the original game’s design. We welcome you to share your feedback on the official Diablo II forums or r/Diablo subreddit.
The original game had an actual contrast setting that let you fine tune the vividness to your display’s currently calibrated saturation level. It worked very well and I’m surprised it isn’t in this remaster. That would solve this problem pretty easily, at least for the “general” washed out looks. The individual color issues (like puddles in caves) have to be tweaked separately.
I just had a Corrupt Rogue literally on top of me and I did not see her. I was like, what’s making these weird grunting noises, until I realized it was an enemy trying to kill me. It was the animation that gave her sneak attack away.
So many people complained (and continue to complain) about the bright colors and high contrast in D3 that it’s not surprising that they went in the extreme opposite direction for D2R. Hope they don’t do the same for D4; I personally think D3 is a beautiful game.
Most areas I’ve seen so far in A1/A2 aren’t washed out, but for some reason the open beta has a really washed out rogue encampment in A1 vs. the closed beta’s clearer one with more contrast.
