Observation on D2 remaster likelyhood

Given the unexpected huge success of WoW classic, I think the chances of a D2 remaster became a lot higher.

Why? Because it shows there is a great appetite among players to replay old classics. And Diablo 2 would be a great game to do this with.

How it is received and how well it does could even help Blizzard make design choices with the alleged upcoming Diablo 4, which is an area they are probably struggling in. It can help answer questions about how much of fans desire for such a game is based on nostalgia.

D2 is a 20yo game. D4 would be a brand new game.

Copying/emulating game systems/designs from the previous century is :zap:not:zap: the way forward. INNOVATION is.

GGG were desperate to copy D2 with POE…and how did that turn out? 6 years later they still haven’t made enough money to make an ORIGINAL game of their own - since POE is a crappy copy/paste of D2. Took them 4 years to port their trash to Xbox, 6 years to port to PS.

Be original. It’s not 1999 anymore.

Hate on D3 all you want, but 30+ million copies sold within 3 years (with RoS) is nothing to scoff at…if you’re capable of rational independent thought, that is. Plenty people still buying & playing it after 7.5 years, with only one expansion & DLC released.

Meanwhile GGG are still desperate to keep whatever number of players they have, with 8 expansions and a huge MTX store. And they’re stuck milking the same old stale cow instead of making a second one.

Outside of the RMAH… how was/is D3 innovative? From my point of view, D3 was stripped of everything that gives diablo its replay value, longevity and depth. This game was streamlined and over simplified beyond belief and not innovative at all.

Dumbing games down isnt the way forward either.

D3 is one of the highest selling and for me played games of its ERA. Compared to its counterpart i personally believe its more inovative then hey fellow GGG employees lets make a pretend D2

Lets start by having Graphics that look Trash and a Clunky Combat System that mimcs the Combat in D2 just at a higher Res.
Lets RIP off the FF7 Materia System and use that for gear
Lets RIP off the FF10 Sphere Grid and put it into our own game for leveling abilities just like SquareEnix did.

Also lets Monetise the hell out of our game making it seem as close to a D2 Clone as possible and hope that the D2 Nostaligia kicks in cause Blizzard are never going to remaster that Dead Horse.

So much innovation and reasons to play right there.

Using systems from all time great games, and then improving them to a whole new level is innovation.

Not sure I follow or agree with this random bashing of PoE in this thread.

Both D3 and PoE are great games in their own right. I greatly enjoy each of them based on the mood I am in when gaming. D3 is a fast pace demon slaying game that is so satisfying, where as PoE is an intensely deep game that offers a unique vibe that any item could be THEE item you need for your build, a great sense of economy, and a nearly perfect itemization system.

Good game companies recognize and appreciate, fans should follow suit imo!

If they release D2 Remaster I hope they at least modernize the game like with WarCraft 3. Otherwise, it’s just the same 18 year old game.

WoW classic success has next to nothing to do with D2 remake possibility.

Why?:

Hundreds of thousands play D2 classic and LoD every day around the world.
Because so many ppl feel D2 is one of the greatest games every made, you can count on at least a million copies sold of D2 HD in the first month or less.

@Sinister I take it you never played much D2.
I can tell because your argument is based on WoW classic.

Figured I would fix the above comment for you, as I think you overestimated the amount of actual people playing D2

Is it possible that this desire to play old classics remastered is because modern releases are missing something?

I agree with you but actually sales of a game heavily depends on the franchise IP. PoE will have much more revenue if they can name it “Diablo”.

That being said I’m still sure not so many people really want a D2 remastered. Myself will buy it (even if it’s only a high resolution D2) but won’t play for long.

PVP system in D2 is garbage from a modern perspective, although it was great 20 years ago. There is no end-game PVE content like GRift.

Given they dropped the idea 5 years ago, it is fairly certain they are well aware of it, and has been working on it for quite some time.

You’re forgetting a really big part of that 30+ million. There was a 12 year hiatus of Diablo. D2 fans were so hyped up for D3 they blindly bought the game, previews looked dope at blizzcon, fans went wild. Can’t say they held that enthusiasm in Diablo 3 very long.

Woah, calm down there.

Nobody is asking for D4 to emulate D2. It’s just worth considering that if D2 classic is a massive success, it makes the case for D4 to be more like D2 than D3 in some regards. Blizzard should be looking at what kept players playing D2 for so long and implementing these ideas into D4. So what if a small percentage of people rmt items. It’s not worth sacrificing the entire economy of the game just to stop that small percentage of people who don’t comply with the rules.

Keyblade, you’re making the case against a decades old game because it has bad graphics? Nobody wants the graphics to look decades old. But they do want a more gothic/darker style.

There is no d2 pvp system.
D2 has a hostile system to make the PVE journey more difficult.
And it makes the PVE system MORE interesting.

That’s what people don’t understand.

I think you mean that’s what people don’t consider interesting.

Only reason d3 sold was because of d2, everyone loved it and wanted the next best thing which was complete garbage
