I just did that tomb of greed thing (not played for awhile) but it never dropped a puzzle ring. Did this stop?
A puzzle ring is never a guarantee drop AFAIK. Are you thinking of Boon of the Hoarder legendary gem? That drops from Greed and needs to be “unlocked” iirc, after which GR RGs can drop it.
Hi, sorry, been away a couple years not sure what afaik and gr rgs is. It used to drop all the time the first time you killed that greed monster

RG - rift guardian
Greed is only guaranteed to drop the Boon of the Hoarder legendary jewel, not the Puzzle Ring.

RGs can actually drop BotH without you setting foot in the vault. Has happened to me in 2 seasons at least. Didn’t get it this way last season though.

Boon of the hoarder will always drop from greater rift guardians if you already have all of the other gems except that one in your stash and character inventory.
It’s not guaranteed. Last season I got all the legendary gems and BotH didn’t drop. Had to get it from Greed.
Yep, just did, the RG dropped a Boon of the Hoarder, never killed Greed…

Several friends and I have been playing the latest season, several hours a day, since it started. None of us have dropped a bovine bardiche, and only one of us (out of 6, all level 70 and working on season completion) have dropped a Treasure Ring. Singular.
Anyone else seeing a low(er) drop percentage on these?
Bovine bardiche only drops naturally for Barb, Crusader and Monk I believe. It very rarely drops for other classes that can’t use them. If you have a class that it does drop for you can craft polearms and use upgrade rares to get them fairly easily at level 31. Get too far above 31 and the odds go down. Filthy Casual has a youtube video on how to get puzzle rings if you’re having problems.

The reason some people see a Boon of the Hoarder gem drop from guardians without having been into the Vault yet is because of a bug. If you do a Not The Cow Level, either by cubing a Bovine Bardiche, or a goblin leaves behind a portal to it, this incorrectly sets the flag that indicates you’ve been to the Vault. So, as the game thinks you’ve been to the Vault, which would have 100% dropped a Boon of the Hoarder, but you don’t have one in your inventory, the guardians can drop one.

That is how I got my Hoarder gem last season. I had the cow portal open randomly and I got the Hoarder gem from a RG before I found any puzzle rings to open a vault.
I’ve actually been meaning to ask if puzzle rings were blocked from dropping until you’ve been to Greed’s Domain? I’ve been gambling and upgrading for rings and still haven’t seen one (which I’ve noticed because I need my Boon of the Hoarder.)
GRs have stopped giving me new gems and they’re not giving me BotH.

No. I’ve found 2 today (1 ancient! 
) and I haven’t been in the Vault yet. Keep searching, you’ll find one eventually.

So I did the not the cow level. Sure enough – puzzle ring dropped. LOL. I guess the cow king was not going to let me benefit from his bug.
But if you do a GR and don’t have the gem yet, you will get a Boon from the GR guardian, providing you don’t have other gems to collect as well.
I’m pretty convinced now that the GR guardian Boon happens only if you’ve done the cow level (or greed level) - and that that is a bug that could be fixed one day.
