I have cleared GR70 multiple times now but i’ve never gotten a primal. I think something went wrong. Due to that issue i have actually never seen an primal in my own game.
The very first time you successfully clear a solo GR70 (or higher) in a season, you get a 100% guaranteed primal and the achievement The Primal Soul-O.
If you have the achievement then you’ve unlocked access to them. You can also confirm this with your bloodshard cap which, if it’s 1200 or higher, means you’ve successfully completed a solo GR70.
You only get one primal per season this way, it’s not per hero.
Once unlocked, primals are roughly 1 in 400 legendaries so, whilst there’s obviously variance involved, how many primals you get will be a function of how many legendaries you get.
As Meteorblade stated,
You only get the guaranteed Primal drop:
- With a Seasonal Character.
- Upon successfully completing a Greater Rift Level 70 or higher Solo.
- “Successfully completing” means killing the Rift Guardian before the 15 minutes expire.
- You only get one guaranteed Primal item per Region per Season. Not per Character. Although, once unlocked, they’re unlocked for all your Seasonal Characters. At the end of the Season it will carry over to non-Season.
You can easily check to see if you’ve unlocked Primal drops for the Season by looking at your Achievements. (See image below).
If you have The Primal Soul-o Achievement and a 1200+ Blood Shards cap, then you have unlocked Primal drops.
Edit: I see that all of your current Characters are Seasonal Characters and you have 993 Paragon Points. I can see no reason why you wouldn’t have received your first guaranteed Primal item. Are you sure you didn’t accidentally salvage it?
Yes that is kinda of a good guide but it isn’t really the avg. Yes the more legendaries you get the better chance have of getting them.
Last season I got 36 and once at the cube doing upgrades. I got 4 in 15 mins. Plus I would have tried for more but I ran out of bounty mats. LOL
I must be one of the lucky ones. Because I have other people tell me that they can go a whole season get maybe 6.
One other thing is most people race through this game at high speed. The less you do the less you are going to get. I play the game for what it is Killing & Exploring. I try and do a much as I can no matter what I’m playing in the game.
I got a puzzle ring for my 1st Primal this season. Still haven’t use it either. LOL Last night doing GR’s I got 2 and in 2 runs back to back.
Your personal results are such a small sample size that they cannot be used to interpolate to the overall drop chance of the entire server’s population.
The 1 in 400 figure is known as the Expected Value…

Anyway, this has nothing to do with Bug Report. If you want more statistics stuff, that’s more suited to General Discussion.
Thanks for the clarification on this. I thought it was per game mode, not just for Seasons. Example, I just did a solo GR70 for the first time ever on a hardcore character and I was expecting a Primal drop but never got one.
It’s only “per game mode” in the sense that your Normal Seasonal Character can get one and your Hardcore Seasonal Character can get one per Region.
So, if you play on all 3 Regions you could get 6 guaranteed Primal items per Season. You just wouldn’t be able to share them with all your Characters. Only your Normal Seasonal Characters on each Region could share them or your Hardcore Seasonal Characters on each Region could share them.
And, of course, at the end of the Season, they’re all converted to non-Season.
Yep, that was my misunderstanding haha. I didn’t know it was Seasonal only, I thought it was first normal, first seasonal, first hardcore, first seasonal hardcore. Now I know! Still wish I would have gotten one, but at least they’re unlocked now.
They still unlock per-character though, right? So if my hardcore character dies for whatever reason, I’d have to do a 70 again on the new character to unlock the ability for them to continue dropping?
No. Once unlocked, they are unlocked for that game mode. If your non-Season Hardcore Character unlocked Primal drops and dies, your new non-Season Hardcore Character has a chance to get a Primal item as soon as Legendary items begin to drop for them.
In other words, if your Blood Shard cap is 1200 or higher, Primal drops are unlocked. So, whenever you create a new Character, open the Inventory and check your Blood Shard cap.
And once you unlock Primal drops in a Season, at the end of the Season the Primal Soul-o Achievement will carry over to your non-Season, which will be another way to confirm Primal drops are unlocked in non-Season.
You learn something new every day. Thank you Perusoe!
(Did it used to be the other way, or am I just completely making things up in my head?)
Nope, the guaranteed primal drop has only ever been for seasonal heroes.
