If Moratorium, Mirinae, Invigorating Gemstone were socketable in helm they’d be competitive in a bunch of builds without much if any balance changes being needed, and I don’t see it making anything imba. Maybe Gemstone couldn’t be total immunity to control impairing effects anymore.
I suppose you’d also add orange text to Leoric’s crown to specify the effects of legendary gems aren’t doubled.
I’d say enable the change in PTR and see if it breaks anything. To me it seems like it would mostly buff very weak builds.
The question for the math nerds would the loss of the 12.5% cdr diamond in helm. I say this because those builds will still need that cdr, and would have to get it somewhere else. Losing out on another damage stat.
It’s pretty easy to figure out. Do you need perma CC immunity on your build ? (and you don’t need the cdr) Then invigorating gemstone in helm. Otherwise, keep the usual gem.
Moratorium and Mirinae are both worse than 12.5% cdr. Both are completely useless.
Hell, if moratorium gave 30% damage reduction without any “staggering and need to kill mobs” downside, it would still be worse than a RCR gem with crimson+leorics.
Making those gems socketable in helms makes zero difference, they’re pretty much useless still. As mentioned above, Invigorating Gemstone is useful only for its CC immunity at rank 25+ but other than that there’s no point using it.
Mirinae was once used in Lazy Inarius build because Inarius is a general purpose set and thus it buffs all damage sources, legendary gems included. But when the proc rate of the Inarius Bone Storm was heavily nerfed, Mirinae became useless.
Keep in mind that some damage dealing gems like Pain Enhancer are not used for their main property of dealing damage, it’s the secondary property that makes them useful. Pain Enhancer at rank 25+ buffs attack speed which is why it’s used in certain builds. Mirinae on the other hand doesn’t have any useful secondary properties.
In order to make Moratorium, Mirinae and Invigorating Gemstone useful, they need a complete redesign. Just moving them to helm is meaningless.
How can you say it wouldn’t need any balance changes? I main wwwrend barb let’s take a look at what it would do. First off we need our cdr from helm socket but for argument sake
lets go without it. We would take boon passive to make it work first off. Now for the gems.
Invigorating gemstone-At max rank is 40% more healing. The number one reason why wwrend is tanky is because our healing from pluoughshare. You add 40% on top and its a joke. With 40% extra we would be able to drop that rune for into the fray and gain 40-50% more damage. Then add even more healing from mirinae. On top of those add moratorium and you will never be one shot and most likely out heal all damage even with just LPH rolls. I mean hey I’ll take it but I think you need to rethink what would actually happen. You would have a bunch of unkillable players running around.
That will not help those defensive gems. Those gems are only used in some niche builds and maybe by hardcore players. Those gems in the helm won’t be a good idea to give up the slot to Diamonds or Amethysts.
I love the Invigorating Gemstone. It`s a little to weak, but with a little buff it can be even more niche. Add + Resource Generation/Shield potency or a little damage reduction based on +Life or your Life Regeneration. f.e. Your armor is increased by 10% of your life regeneration.
My point is, why not make the change? You’d almost always prefer CDR or RCR in helm, but with some small tweaks (maybe none at all) there could be some niche uses for Invigorating Gemstone, Mirinae and Moratorium, whereas right now there’s practically no use.
With the skeleton dev team that’s left, enabling them in helm in ptr and seeing what happens seems totally valid to me. I doubt it would break much, even with no changes. They probably don’t have the time for a full redesign (what should happen).
I have a better idea, allow legendary gems to be socketed to armor, pants, off hand and helm. There. Game balance. Wake me up when servers start to catch fire from mass calculations required to handle 9 gems for each players who never die but never can properly sustain anything.
This is the issue; since they have only a skeleton crew, their time/resources should be devoted to meaningful balance changes rather than something relatively trivial like this.
