Like in Poe you have a small phrase that describes an historic figure or event of sanctuary in relation with this unique item
Ie: Andariel’s visage
“The magical mask she wore to hide her identity while she was preying on her victims”

I suppose that is a less invasive way. Diablo III has elements of this but a good deal of the items are based on or around pop culture and therefore not very Sanctuarian.
Diablo 3 has this; and judging from the unique items they’ve shown us, so will Diablo 4.
swing and a miss, poesycophant.
God I hope they move away from those unique items names
Talk about dark fantasy ruining and immersion breaking
Especially since modern pop culture is trash
Just give my a 2h mace called The Beefhammer with the flavor text of “What part of the bull did you say this came from again?”
They allready have this in D3
All I saw from Diablo 3 flavour text are fluff phrases
What I’m talking about is lore describing stuff
Get a Druid unique and it gives a part of Druid history
Ie: “Bulkatho and Fiaclager disagreed on how to live but agreed both ways had merit, so they parted ways and create barbarians and Druid”
Yeah, Diablo 3 had some legendary items doing that too.
Just some of them
Warhelm of Kassar (Helm):
At Akkhan’s request, Kassar trained the first Crusaders, turning them into skillful warriors through his rigorous methods. His own apprentices faced harsher trials and were each lost in training, unable to carry on his name. --Abd al-Hazir, The Crusaders
Taken from:
Andariel’s Visage (Helm):
Some long-forgotten artisan crafted this helmet in the hideous likeness of the Maiden of Anguish. For what purpose, none can say.
Taken from:
Seven Sins (Shoulders):
The alchemist Lyekurn spent many years formulating the exact shape and nature of this armor so that it would draw upon the power of Azmodan, yet keep the wearer safe from his corrupting influence.
Taken from:
Pandemonium Loop (Ring):
“Wishing to sow fear among the angelic defenders of the Pandemonium Fortress, Diablo gifted this ring to Iskatu, who used it to great effect in his battles against the Host. Its power could not sway Imperius, however, and the ring was lost along with Iskatu’s arm before the demon could flee the field of battle.” —Deckard Cain
Taken from:
The Short Man’s Finger (Ring):
This finger belonged to an Umbaru priest who had lost his legs and would summon smaller gargantuans to carry him to rituals. Although he has long since gone to Mbwiru Eikura, his finger remains a conduit to his strange practices.
Taken from:
The Tall Man’s Finger (Ring):
This finger was severed from the hand of an Umbaru priest who crossed over to Mbwiru Eikura in search of knowledge and came back… changed. Before the unclean phantasm was finally slain, he evinced great power over the dead, and this metal-plated digit still possesses some of that power.
Taken from:
Also for the Seven Sins shoulders, there used to be a legendary crafting material needed to craft said shoulders that was called Lyekurn’s Diary. According to that material lore info, Azmodan had found out about Lyekurn and had sent his minions to kill the alchemist and steal both his diary and armor in order to prevent others from learning to channel Azmodan’s power.
But all in all, Diablo 3 have some of what you’re asking for. So it’d be highly likely that Diablo 4 will have it as well.
As long as it’s not major lore it’s fine.
If they decide the Destiny 1/Soulbornkerioring route, then they can get bent.
They better make special NPC who would voice over that small lore texts when you bring him/her these items. Just adding them as a description feels cheap. I never read it neither in D3 nor in POE.
That’d be interesting to say the least. Having a character like the Horadrim guy we saw in the Diablo 4 gameplay trailer read off the lore info of some of the unique items would be nice.
Wow that would be cool, imagine if he also identifies them and tell you their story, something like a scholar and/or Horadrim, ideally an old guy for credibility
Damn if only Diablo franchise had such npc, we would cherish it and make sure he doesn’t get killed by bad writers
Just make the NPC a ghost, problem solved. “Ghost of Cain” Identifies and reads special lore items.
As much as i want Cain back this would just be wierd and disrespectful to his honour. If he comes back it should be in a cut scene saving the hero with his knowledge and farewell again r.i.p. (till nxt time).
Honestly Cain coming back would be incredibly unlikely (even as a ghost) due to Malthael’s action where he empowered himself with the power of death by consuming the souls of the dead. If Cain’s soul was consumed by Malthael (which it likely was), then Cain’s soul is lost forever.
Like Kronos in Greek myth, a deity-level being can regurgitate and reform the consumed.
Unlikely since Malthael’s consumption of souls rendered them gone forever.
Forever is nothing in a game without time.
After all, plot is plot regardless of the future and past. Anything can, will, and does happen solely on the “needs of the story.”
