Lets put sunglasses on the Mona Lisa

I mean why not? It’s obviously more modern, she looks hip and this is a major update from that same old boring painting we have all seen over, and over. I think we could maybe do a little more, why not a backwards hat, and a neck tattoo… she will be super 2021 modern and hip, and there will be nothing to complain about, am I right?

And yes this is another one of these threads…

It’s absolutely stupid to suggest changing something that could technically be considered “digital art” at this point, D2 defined a genre, and has a legacy up there with some of the most iconic video game creations to ever exist. I can’t believe I even have to get on here and type this out. What is there not to understand? A few common sense QOL here and there is a given, but new items, personal loot, I have even seen requests for rifts… amongst other horrific suggestions… i mean come on ppl that is NOT D2!

I see people on here saying “JuSt pLaY tHe oRiGiNaL” or “Click a check box for shared loot” I have a better idea how about YOU go play a game with personal loot that already caters to your wants and needs, like D3 I mean you guys have D4 on the horizon, but you want to just take a huge dump all over a iconic masterpiece, to top it off, the hostility from some of you that are literally getting mad at people that just want the game that they know, and have played for 20 years, to be that exact same experience and be a true remaster just like every remaster has gotten…

“Just play the original”

This argument is about the dumbest of all of them. imagine being excited for your favorite game of all time to be remastered Crash Bandicoot is being remastered and people wanting to add new levels, characters, gameplay features only to be told. “Well the old Crash Bandicoot is there if you dont like the remaster” are you fing serious bro? No sorry that isn’t a remaster that is a completely different game. I think some of you need to understand what a remaster is, and what a remake is. “bUt tHiS gAmE wIlL bE dOA” Wrong this game will last 20 more solid years if all it gets is just a fresh coat of paint.

Personal Loot - This will BREAK the game literally the absolute worst change that could ever happen to this game. It’s not going to work the loot is not split 1/8 and there is just too many issues to mention to begin, you lack a fundamental understanding of this game, this is not something that can just be turned “on” or “off” account bound items would kill trading, “bUt FeeLs bAd sOmEonE gOt mY sHako” oh really well too bad then, I guess this game isn’t for you, if you didnt pick it up… it isn’t yours… better luck next time? It’s a part of the game, trust me, grabbing that item you saw drop and it being a GG item is a much better feeling than having something auto allocated to you just because you decided to join a game and sit there and lick your cheeto stained fingers. It’s like having a kids birthday party and when the pinata is whacked all the candy falls on the ground but HALT! lets get the adults to intervene to distribute the candy evenly, so that everyone gets their fair share! Sounds like a blast huh…

I’m not here to say REFUND I will hold out and pray to Tyreal they preserve this iconic masterpiece so that it doesn’t end up in the dustbin of history. Some things are worth preserving the way that they are. I guess if blizz allows mods, hopefully a team will use the new graphics and do a legit D2 LOD vanilla mod LOL (ridiculous if it has to be this way). SMH this game is going to fail miserably if they deviate from something that has already stood on its own merit for 20 years. The revisionists will crush Diablo 2’s soulstone forever…

Not interested in starting a flame war with anyone, as a day 1 D2 release player, I would hate to see this game fall prey to something it was never intended to be… Good Day.

Are all of these art? Are these all Mona Lisa-inspired? Does the existence of variants diminish the original?

Oh look another guy says go play d3 or wait for d4 while complaining about being told “go play d2” :+1:

If the Mona Lisa was all old and dusty and barely visible today, and an artist that specializes in restoring paintings decided to put sunglasses on the original painting, then yes it does. That is a closer equivalent to what we are talking about here.

Oh look another revisionist that doesn’t understand what a remaster is.

They already made changes, so that’s literally what a remaster is.

They did use the term remaster (defined as improving the audio and visual quality to a more modern standard) to describe D2R at Blizzcon. Remastered games are mostly defined by visual upgrades (often just improved models, textures and resolutions) and minor QoL additions in the options menu, like Starcraft Remastered.

If they are in fact making any significant changes beyond what defines a remastered game, then they need to come out and re-define it as a remake. In some ways D2R already qualifies as such because they’ve re-made the visuals completely in a new engine, which is a common attribute of remakes. The definition of what D2R is has been a point of major confusion and is causing a lot of heated discussion on various forums. But maybe this dialogue is what they need to make the best decisions for D2R.

I think they’re afraid to come out and re-definite it as anything but a remaster for fear of creating an uprising, and they probably haven’t even made their minds up yet. Either way, D2 will look good with or without sunglasses on. I’m not that worried.

Been reading a lot of interesting comments here about D2R. I was a Day 1 player for both D1 and D2, and played both of them for years. Never played D3, I had been super excited for it until discovering that it would be online only and be a PTW game. So I supported and played Grim Dawn instead. Finally got tired of GD after 8 years, and while bored out of my skull, recently decided to give D3 a try.
Fortunately the RMAH is long gone, and online-only is no longer the deal breaker it once was. Although I’m having some fun with it, it IS imo extremely dumbed-down from D2, and holds your hand every step of the way.
Nevertheless, I think it will be a fun little distraction until D2R hits the street.
I watched the deep dive video for D2R, and am once again super excited for a Diablo game. The original’s dated GFX was one of the reasons I finally quit playing; compared to games like GD, it was just too hard to look at. Even back in 2000, 800x600 rez was obsolete, and I constantly wished for better.
Being able to play D2 with modern graphics and high resolutions will be wonderful. That being said, even though I am a Diablo player from the old school, I will not be averse to QOL improvements like larger stash and auto-pickup of gold. Having to click on every single pile of gold back in 2000 annoyed me just as much as it does today. Some proposed changes like personal loot I have no opinion about, as I have no interest in multi-player, and only do solo.
I do think they shouldn’t have censored the female characters’ appearances, and made them look mannish and butch (I hear this is already being remedied). But overall, I was impressed with what the VV devs say they have planned for the game, and am looking forward to playing D2R for at least as long as I played D2…

I saw one with a red bandana mask that made the Mona Lisa look like a bank robber so I skipped that one, too.

Since players can choose the option for either FFA or personal loot in D2R, your idea is not a closer equivalent. The closer equivalent is do you want to have the option to choose the original Mona Lisa or a variant in D2R while others make their own choice based on their personal preferences. The variant does NOT replace the original.

There are certain camps to these suggestions to me:

  • Should not be done as they’re too core changing
  • Should be done on a future patch but not at launch
  • Should be done before launch

Things like rifts and personal loot I do think move to the “should not be done” camp although I’d be much more against rifts than I would Personal Loot as long as BoA and BoG stay away from the loot mechanism.

New items, skill tweaks (as much as I want to see them), and other balance adjustments I think should be a season 2 or season 3 change to the game as it gives ladder junkies something for their preferred class potentially and adds stuff for people to tinker with.

I do think though “new items” (or other game itemization or balance changes) being talked about in the same vein as Personal Loot is a bit over the top though OP. Depending on when you hopped off the D2 game (or even if you still play it) the we’re all going to disagree on when itemization was the best so items themselves are obviously not anywhere close to touching on the core soul of the game’s enjoyability.

Edit: This is assuming itemization style remains the same which I think is a VERY safe assumption. We’re not going to suddenly scale everything off of weapon damage =p

I don’t like the way she’s looking at me so I’m fine with putting sunglasses on her.

I wonder how many D3 fanboys who got D2:R surveys in their Email just to vote what to add or not in D2:R.

They are totally ruining the game for us, thank you Blizzard.
Blizzard is sellouts

All the Blizzard developers are D3 fanboys anyways so…

True D2 chads left Blizzard long ago.

First of all, your example with Mona lisa is wrong and if people tell you, based on that, to go and play the original game they are right… (think about it)
Second, to be more specific, d2r is partially remake… the game is the same but all graphics are made from scratch…
So, basically you are saying that your problem is with personal loot and Crash Bandicoot is your favorite game :grinning:… why you had to write a whole essay about that? Also, there is already a topic about that…

P.S. : Crash Bandicoot remake is the best!!!

Very well written!

It´s so weird how so many people want to destroy a restoration.

I couldn’t agree more. I gotta say I’m so very worried, early days player here and I just fear they will butcher the greatest game of all time.

Hypothetically speaking even IF they were able to come up with a personal loot system that was absolutely bug free (L0L)…i could live with that I’m just so worried they will go further trying to make a “showstopper” or listening to some of the ideas on Reddit. Lord have mercy.

I don’t know why everyone is getting so excited over people posting their opinions in these forums. That’s what they’re here for. It’s like every time someone suggests something crazy, everyone else reacts as though Blizzard has already taken the suggestion and patched it into Diablo 2: Resurrected.

Let’s use this example. Does anyone really think rifts are going to be added to D2:R? No. If you think the idea won’t work, chances are Blizzard is thinking the same thing. Nothing to worry about. No need to start a flame war on the forums. Move on with your day to the next post.

Blizzard has so far shown the proper amount of respect and reverence for this fact. In every article, video, or presentation regarding D2:R, Blizzard has convinced me they want to preserve the original experience as much as possible. Even with small QoL improvements (like auto-pick-up for gold) they seemed reluctant and concerned about changing the core D2 experience.

Everyone asking for personal loot is going to be let down. I’m sorry, but the developers aren’t going to change the entire economy of D2 in order to accommodate this. They are trying to preserve the greatest ARPG of all time and give it a facelift. That’s it.

The fact that the original D2 is running beneath the updated graphics should be the only indicator you need as to how Blizzard will handle whacky requests like adding rifts or new classes. They’re not going to mess around with the original D2 code too much, they’re simply going to add a layer of pretty graphics and sound over it, add a couple QoL improvements which don’t alter any aspect of gameplay (auto-gold, stash size), and re-present one of the greatest video games of all time.
