Legacy of Dreams Gem - But Why Tho?

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of why Legacy of Dreams is capped to only 350x2 for power and 2x2 for defense for each ancient item? This is identical to Legacy of Nightmares, except you don’t have to level it to 99. I don’t see the appeal of having to give up a legendary gem slot instead of giving up two rings, but having a 3rd legendary gem slot to use is far more important since you can just use the cube for a ring power.

For giggles, I leveled it up all the friggin way to 99. I tried a full 13 item ancient legendary build for a Barbarian. I compared that to a full 13 item ancient whirlwind set build. Power? Sure, I was hitting like 20-40 billion per critical hammer strike, but I was getting decimated by anything over Level 16+. Just absolutely no defense there. With whirlwind I was probably dishing 20-40B every three strikes or so, but my defense was like 3x as much due to the innate set bonus (combined w/the other defense bonuses)

So again, in short…WHY is this capped at level 99? I think a lot more people would see the benefit here if you could go beyond the 750% per ancient legendary item and even add a % scaled increase on defense bonus. I mean, most set’s you can dish out an average of 10,000% damage bonuses with at least a 50% damage decrease…so shouldn’t a VERY high dream gem of like level 150 dish out like 15,000% damage bonus and maybe like a 65% damage decrease?

Just to make leveling it up worth it . Otherwise - the only purpose this has is to jump-start a low level new character and equip this via your stash, but I think the potential here to ONLY use ancient item bonuses and rival that of sets (which I’ve only ever seen high-yield players use)

To make it equal to LoN. Keep in mind that some LoN/LoD builds are already incredibly powerful. LoD does NOT need any more power in any form.

Also it’s worth noting that LoD doesn’t even have to be max level to provide massive benefit. For example if you have 13 ancients and LoD at rank 49, you’re doing half the damage you would do with LoD at max rank. That equals ~5 GR levels.

Majority of lon builds, gaining 2 jewelry slots > the 3rd leg gem. Its purposely set at this figure for balancing reasons.

LoD at its current form is very balanced.

There are several LoD WW builds for speed and they are good and fast for t16 and grifts up to 75+. Must have the right items and gear rolls…
There is a Barb forum T16 WW speed build posted in the forum.
There are other variations that are almost as fast and still very good…

Well, reading this paragraph it’s pretty apparent that you haven’t thought about this situation deeply enough.

The power of this gem surpasses the ring set because you don’t have to have a slot filled with an Ancient item in order to get a power boost. With the LoN set, you do. And while the Legendary bonus is half what the Ancient bonus is, you at least get some bonus while you’re searching around for Ancient items to maximize that bonus., and because you only give up a single gem rather than two rings to use it, you now have available a greater variety of build situations, and the chance to create even more power with a pair, or a set, of rings that you would have to forgo in order to use the Legacy of Nightmares set.

If you “don’t see the appeal,” of giving up a gem slot rather than two rings - and you’re not really giving it up, you’re using a potentially more powerful gem which then allows you to use a potentially more powerful set of rings - then you need to expose yourself to a larger variety of builds so that you can understand what that appeal might be.

Can anyone enumerate which builds using LoN Rings, are more powerful than the LoD counterpart?
ie, a 3rd Leg Gem > 2 rings?

Lol i dont think there are any the 2 extra ring spots is pretty much needed and pretty much makes the LoD version’s better.

Except LoD allows you to have 2 legendary rings for their power. LoN still a pick for primary and channel based specs while LoD gives you flexibility, faster benefits for everything else but takes up a gem slot and needs to be upgraded.

META and 1st to 2nd tier solo bds probably not. But if you ask for ALL then, LON Bombardment. With the current buffs, you can take off HOI meaning you can cube illusory. Equip stone G + Ice climbers. So, you don’t need unity + soj. LoD replaces One of dps gem which > those 2 rings. On high tiers, you burn elites from trash…this builds optimized @ 153+ AD for this purpose. 5th passive from HF is not so ideal too as its defensive oriented. FoT should be on equip. You dont really use zodiac for this build as CDR BP 65+ will guarantee AC up time.

Personally, i ll use LON version for necro solo thorns too. I dont see CoE + unity + Krysbin with boyarski +enforcer stronger than LON+CoE+ boyarski+stricken(zeis)+ enforcer. The difference is whether you go for damage vs toughness. This is dependant on playstyle and paragon.

LoD vs LoN is a lot more flexible / more individual based than cookie cutting one bd fits all. Hence, its “balanced”

It’s meant to be an equal alternative to Lon. The appeal of LoD Is that it opens up the ring slots, allowing more customization of your build, at the cost of a single legendary gem.

It’s not meant to be something that overpowers LoN and renders it useless. It’s not meant to render other sets useless by boosting damage beyond what other sets can do.

If it doesn’t appeal to you, then really it’s not designed for how you want to play and not for you. For players like me, that wanted the ring slots open to use other rings formore build options for the other 99% of the game that is not GR, this is a great item.

What are some builds that folks have for hero types that utilize the LOD (assume level 99 on par with LON) gem? Again - I haven’t seen a single high paragon player use an all ancient item set on high GR levels, its always sets. And of course, the same sets, which is an entirely different conversation on why D3 is a bit stale these days and why we need D4

What I would like to see is either an increase to the power/armor bonus for an extremely high level LOD gem (something only possibly attained lets say once you hit GR 100’s) as to make folks consider using non-set builds more, or perhaps, allow the LOD gem to also be in effect WITH set bonuses, albeit ONLY the non offensive/defensive bonus.

For example:

Let’s say I’m using a Lev99 LOD gem with 13 ancient leg items, so my overall power bonus is a bit less than 10,000%, and defensive bonus is 52%. Lets say you equip that bad boy with a full necro bone set. Normally, the LOD gem would fail to work at all, right? What if instead of that, it registered all 13 set anc leg items’, but negates all the additional power/def granted by your set. HOWEVER - it would still give you the after-effects, such as the bone armor swirling effect.

I could see a lot of folks then using this - not giving up your sets that are all ancients, but still having some of the fun non-raw power/defensive bonuses like increased speed, attacks, effects, etc.

Bazooka Wizard (4 player META)
Carnevil DoD WD
Captain America Crusader
etc.

Plenty of builds.

LoN/LoD may have lower damage and mitigation buffs than some sets but keep in mind that it allows more versatility by being able to use more legendary powers.

Remember that LoD also has the added benefit of giving a buff with NON-ANCIENT items as well. LoN did not provide this so at multiple levels between ancient count and gem level, the gem actually is more powerful then LoN even when not maxxed out at 99.

The LoD to LoN question is based on what provides more benefit, 1 gem or 2 rings. In most cases, you get more out of having 2 ring bonuses and the LoD dream then gaining on the 1 extra leg gem. Trapped/Stricken filled a lot of builds and in a lot of cases, that 3rd gem is a defensive gem like esoteric which can be dropped for LoD.

you forgot LoN singlularity and thorns necros

I simply gave a few examples. You clearly missed the “etc.” part of my post.

Look up Bluddshed’s comparisons of LoN and LoD with links to calculator made by a diablo fan on youtube.
He compares the two and gives reasons why to use either.

It should stack with legacy of nightmare rings without losing dps
.

make legacy of nightmare a reg leg not a set
.

add primal to add more dps to nightmare

No, it shouldn’t stack.
