Learning from the Error of D3 Set Dungeons

It never fails. The last 3 seasons I’ve been a part of I’ve done everything else, but when there’s only set dungeons left I consider how much I want the rewards, and I consider how much I hate the experience of set dungeons…and I end up not getting the pet.

I’m not the only one. This forum is overloaded with threads with players complaining about set dungeons.

Here’s the problem. Set dungeons feel comparable to a series of athletic competitions such as “Jump rope 100 times in under 3 minutes…with an M&M between your teeth that if you break you have to start over…after jogging 2 laps around the football field”.

At their core, set dungeons are fine. Prove proficiency with a set/playstyle. However, the bizarre tertiary requirements that are unrelated to REAL gameplay are disgusting. And the 45 second long walk of shame back out the way you came when you fail is miserable.

I recently read another player comment that set dungeons should be as simple as:
Kill all enemies in under 5 minutes.
While equipping the 6-piece bonus.

Its not fancy, but it works, and it does what it is supposed to do.

Anyway, please learn from the failure of set dungeons, and don’t make the same design errors going forward.

I have never competed a set dungeon, and will never be good enough to pass the challenge. It is fine I guess, I am not good with challenges. And I do understand it is meant to be difficult. So what I am trying to say is, do not give up and keep trying. For who knows you may be able to complete the challenge. Not everyone is going to get the final prizes.

I completed the set dungeons in 2 or 3 of the first seasons I’ve done but not in the last few seasons. They aren’t hard. It usually just takes 5-10 tries at worst. And yet somehow they are so intensely unpleasant that I can’t make myself do them anymore.

Unpopular opinion. I hate Conquests more than Set Dungeons.

Nobody likes set dungeons, but every class has at least one that is super easy. Farm the pieces for that set, watch a YouTube video, done. They are not the insurmountable obstacle that some think they are. Should they be part of season journey? No. But Blizz isn’t going to change that.

I detest set dungeons but there are two I know I can master easily. Marauders for the DH and Invoker for the Crusader.

And my son who has never ever been in a set dungeon before. Mastered the Firebirds set dungeon for Wizard in two tries.

I would rather farm Staff Of Headring each season than master Sheet Dungeon. Even thou I did it many times (the simple ones only) it’s awfull everytime for me

And yet, after all these years. Every class has at least one set dungeon being so easy, that the most time you will spend, is getting the set items themselves.

I like set dungeons. At least some of them, in any case. It’s nice having something other than endless rifts and bounties.

The new Natalya’s set dungeon is nice… if you follow Wudijo’s advice.

With all the super easy set dungeons available people still complain about them?
If you can’t do one of them I’d like to see you try the conquests.

Because some people want to have everything given to them without putting in any effort to learn something new.

TP, bro, TP

They already have that. It is called GR’s

But if you want that, run Marauders. It is exactly that except don’t get hit.

Some are incredibly, stupid easy. AKA Marauders. Spend 3 minutes doing something you hate and get it over with, then enjoy the next 3-6 months of fun.

I get it, they were horribly designed from the start and should have been fixed years ago, but they aren’t going to fix them now, so in the time it took you to compose this thread, you could have easily completed Marauders and been on your way.

BTW, if you really want an exercise in pain, start farming up the Gibbering Gemstone or find the Cursed peat for the cursed chest conquest.

You know that the message shown when you press the keybind for Town Portal inside a set dungeon (warning that it will take you to the entrance of the Dungeon —aborting the run– instead of town) is not an easter egg from the developers tryharding to be funny, do you?

Indeed, when you unconditionally fail both objectives (or “die” within the Dungeon), it spawns a green portal taking you back to the entrance pylon for the sake of making it easier and faster for you to retry the thing, or whatever you may want to do next.

Nah, this season the bar got really low. People like OP can get away with a couple of them (and maybe the required three for completion of the seasonal journey) just by trying its hardest, just level 3 gems to 65 (so just being able to complete GR 74, not even 75 xD) and maybe in those runs get the farm to collect 6 sets between two different classes, and “reach” GR 55 with them (truly another F E A T O F S T R E N G T H). These leeches, that like so much having everything given to them, most probably will play in public games either asking actively for a gearboost or just to “overcome their limi***ions” and get some keys the only way they can… which take us to the accidental completion of a nephalem rift under two minutes… by your regular player out there just 2 weeks into the season, doing homework and chores.

If Blizzard wouldn’t had unrolled the red carpet for prospective D4 buyers, they would be here at the forums whining about HOW HARD THAT THIRD CONQUEST GETS FOR ME AND A GUY THAT I KNOW.

Go figure.

Well, there’s a number of set dungeons that are basically just that.
If:

Has been your experience, you’ve clearly aimed for the few set dungeons that are actually a tad annoying, WW barb for instance.

It is hard to deny many are at best tedious and annoying. It should match the bonuses to go along with the set in the real game, not annoy the %%%% out of us with some quirky ordeal to complete.

When they first were introduced, I believe you had to complete them in 3:30 mins, at least now they are far easier in the 5:00 mins.

You can also go in with a friend that is a different class and\or build than you, they do not suffer from the restrictions the opening player has to accomplish.

Well, sure, but there’s only a few that actually poses some difficulty and a number that basically can’t be failed if you pay the least bit of attention, so for the sake of completing the season journey it’s at most a 5 minute investment to master one if you go the easy route.

Agree with you 110%, didnt mean to imply in the last post anything different. Blizz missed the mark with the set dungeons. The Set Dungeons, in concept, a would and could have been a fun addition to the game, instead, well we got what we got.

The dumbest (IMHO) of course were the ones that you got a checked off accomplishment wearing an immunity amulet, the one where the Wizard build that you intentionally kill\proc your char (imagine doing that move in hardcore), the Barb one, being a melee character where you fail for taking physical damage.

The only time you hear ‘Lets have a set dungeon party’ to to get the journey requirement done, or for the truly insane  to do the 8Set Dungeon conquest

More like 10-15 minutes with changing set and skills, walking to the dungeon, etc. If you do not know the set dungeon, you may also have to look up the build up and read/watch a walk through. At worst it should never take more than 20-30 min to master the easiest set dungeons.
