I got a message that I acquired a mount, but I cannot find it in my inventory.
I think this was after killing Mathanial? I just cannot find it anywhere?
If you mean a Pet, on PC anyway, to enable it, open your Collection Menu and click the mirror on the bottom right corner of your screen. You can also equip it via the Wardrobe near the Mystic in Town. Simply click the pet and click the equip button.
There are no mounts in Diablo 3. There are pets that you can access by clicking the mirror icon to view your cosmetics interface. There are also some pet items that drop and you right click them to add them to the cosmetics list.
What I think you got was the Cross game promotion reward. It gives you a Hero’s of the Storm reward for something you do in D3.
D3 > HotS; Reach lvl 70 in a D3 Season and get a free Malthael’s Phantom mount in HotS.

Achievements > Career > Feats of Strength
Ghost Reporting
Participate in the Malthael’s Bargain promotion in Heroes of the Storm.
In Diablo III, it granted wings, but I think it may have granted a mount in HOTS.
