Sometimes in a rift, especially when running with a party, a room can get really crowded, and there can be quite a light-show (and my wizard is contributing to this problem).
It can be really hard to find (and target) the elite in the midst of all that activity.
Sometimes the elite will die and one guy will grab the rift cookies and move on, and the rest of us don’t realize the elite is dead (unless we watch chat the whole time) and we keep wailing on the useless pack.
Elites have “ordinary” floating health bars, so those bars don’t help. Unless the room clears enough, it can be hard to pick out their gold/blue color (and the golds really blend in with a lot of special effects). I often wind up wasting time to “thin out” the minor guys just so I can find the frickin’ Elite and kill him and move on.
I occasionally notice a small yellow circle on my minimap in the vicinity of an elite. But that does not appear to be consistent (and I’m not even sure if it’s related).
The only real “solution” to this, as far as I know, is to keep an eye on the chat to monitor when you’ve engaged and killed elites, especially if you’ve engaged more than one and are trying to drag a few mobs together. Assuming you’re not already, changing your chat window settings so you’re not seeing quest dialogue and temporarily leaving community channels might help here.

Keep close to your party members and watch the minimap, their circles turn red when they engage an elite. Your’s doesn’t sadly. Also they keep being red while fighting useless leftover minions.
And the reward globes of course.
It would be nice if they showed skull items on the minimap for nearby elites, yellow for boss, blue for blue pack, grey for minions. And color your own circle red on elite combat too.

Color-coded skull icons is a great idea.

Yes, there’s a way. It starts with the letter T.
For checking if the elite is still alive, I usually check the chat box for the matching spawn+death messages. If there is too much going on, I just hover my mouse over the packs of mobs and look for the elite label.
Now, if you are looking to locate the elite inside a big pack of mobs, good luck.
As a primarily Shadow/Impale DH, this has been the bane of my existence. I just keep on firing and changing targets in the pack, waiting to see when the elite’s health bar on it’s title/label will start going down.
I don’t know of a better way (that is not against the rules, of course), I’m afraid.

Wow, I never realized that. I just thought that meant they were taking damage. All this time I did not know that. Armed with this knowledge, I have run a few public GRs and this has really upped my utility with a party.
Thank you very much.
