Is there a method to pause xp for ethereal farming?

Found an amazing video for grinding ethereals, and one particular comment stood out:

“You can do this method with the lockingmethod, that your party stays at lvl 5 and then just run and kill everything. For the locking party you need 2 persons thought”

What is this method? Is it legit? My wife and me can totally do it since we play together so needing 2 players is no problem. But if its a bug/exploit I won’t do it(can just say its one and dont need to explain then), just wondering what it is and if its legit feature.

One of you have a level 5 char, makes a game, level 70 joins, level 5 leaves, you are now in a level 5 game until you leave game. And no, nothing exploitable about it, you’re just in a low level game. The one of you that left with the low level can rejoin on a high level char of course.

100% real, and it’s all about taking full advantage of a low-level game’s vastly limited drop pool, greatly increasing the chance for an ethereal to drop.

A note though…Level 5 games are better if you are doing Vault Runs by transmuting Puzzle Rings. Eths will RARELY drop at level 5 anywhere else. If you don’t have Puzzle Rings, plan to run rifts in a two-person game, a level 13 game would work MUCH better for that approach  I’ve done both methods for getting my eths (I have the achievement for BOTH the American and European realms).

One other option:

Stay in town until just before the big bad and then teleport to a player. It won’t completely negate farming, but you need to ensure you’re present when the thing dies so it drops loot for you.

Otherwise, if you’re looking to loot ethereal items, you can stay 2-3 maps/screens back and break everything/open all chests if the group lets you, which should also reduce/mitigate XP… but again, you want to be around when the big thing drops to get treasures.

The other option is to use the Vault exploit and avoid killing anything but Greed with a low level character. If all you want are the transmogs unlocked and not actual useful items.

But, on the whole, there is no actual way to not get XP unless you nothing dies. Even if you’re “locked” to a game at Normal difficulty and you’re level 70, Paragon 19999 you’re still going to get 1 XP, or more.

The point of locking the game to low level is that you only have that lootpool to contend with, so much higher chance of getting an ethereal. Pretty sure that was was he meant with locking XP.

You can do that with the vault as well, start the game with a level 5, have a 10+ join and the level 5 leave. Regardless of amount of XP the level 10+ gets, the game itself will be a level 5 so you can never “outlevel” the beneficial loot pool.

Yeah thats what I meant, thanks for explaining. Thanks all for the responses. So from what I’m understanding, our lvl 5s won’t gain XP because the game is “locked”?

That’s exactly what the guy was doing in the video, he almost always got an ethereal.

You might not have the same luck as him. If you pay attention all people who pull that trick run with 3 other players to maximize magic find from moving together bonus; Strength In Numbers. In case you’re only 2 players there’s another way to collect ethereals but it’s a bit too complicated to explain.

You need a good lvl70 weapon to turn into a lvl1 requirement item via rank 25 Gem of Ease first and collect a total of 14-15 puzzle rings by the help of mass gambling some rings from Kadala on a lvl31 character (Demon Hunter, Witch Doc, Crusader, Monk) and spare them apart. Do bounties or hit up lvl60-90 GRs for collecting shards in the mean time.
You simply hit lvl5-6 on a new character while holding that overpowered weapon and run past everything with Illusory boots at cube, until you reach Greed’s room without killing anything. Rinse and repeat to kill Greed quickly with a new lvl5-6 character once you deposit your lvl1 requirement weapon back to stash.

Search forums you’ll find different ways. Most internet guides suggest lvl6-11, 4-man T6 Nephalem Rifts in a level locked game session but those are simply ineffective at lower player counts. Also you always need someone to join while you switch heroes if you do it that way. You might need some boost like Nagelring and lvl60 Cain’s gloves to get the results you expect.
The path I described is fool proof; preparation takes long but you’ll get all 21 ethereals in one week flat if you keep trying. You can do it solo by yourself, no help required. If needed, you just run your lvl5-6 characters together which won’t be an issue.

No, you’ll still gain XP and go up levels as you do the vault runs. No way to avoid XP gain that I’m aware of at any level.
