The Chinese Government is buying control of tencent, and tencent owns a large control of blizzard, so this looks really suss. What if the Microsoft buyout is blocked? China would own blizzard and we would literally have tik tok levels of spyware in our bnet app. That means diablo 4 would go extreme pay2win. Why is the Chinese Government buying videogame companies?

They have 4.9% stock in ATVI and will have none if the Microsoft deal goes through.

So no, they don’t own any controlling interest in ATVI, or Blizzard.

You must have been thinking of Riot who is 100% owned or GGG (Path of Exile) who is 80% percent owned and has controlling interest.

Blizzard is already bending over for China’s government. They don’t need to be owned by China to do that.

EDIT: I don’t follow Fox news, but literally the first video that pops up if you search on YouTube for this lol. CNN also made news of it and you can find it on google.

Unless they come up with a new business partner, Blizzard will not be doing any business in China anymore besides Diablo Immortal which has a different contract. Blizzard refused to agreed to the terms NetEase wanted and instead are packing up.

All agreements with NetEase end on Jan 23rd, 2023.

So, no more Diablo 3, WoW, OW, Starcraft, possible D4, or anything else in China in about a week.

Leaving the China market is kind of the opposite of “caving”.

I REALLY hope they don’t end up with Tencent as a partner instead. That would actually give China control they don’t currently have. Blizzard has been financially “safe” in that respect up until now. I would prefer they just don’t do business there at all. Just a personal take on it.

There is a zero chance that they won’t be coming back. Heck, the reason that they even left in the first place was because of Blizzard was too greedy and wanted 2 years worth of payment upfront.

China had a 10%+ year over year growth of GDP for the last 30+ years… that means they become very rich as a country… and they are sitting on mountains of liquid cash that wants investing… They aren’t buying only videogame companies… they are buying anything that is on the market and is remotely useful… They bought half of Afrika, why not some fine USA companies.

That is old news, which came out before we knew Bobby K. abused women in his office and looked away when told of so many abuse charges made over the years in Blizzard offices.
