Is it a violation of the CoC

Good to see that the forum moderators actually took action on this matter swiftly.

At least this finally confirmed that impersonating someone in the forum is actually an offense.

This case had some (very necessary) visibility. For the most part, Blizzard isn’t going to notice anything until the community catches on and informs them of what’s going on as was done here. As much as I hate saying it, expecting this level of justice for every impersonator isn’t feasible without the community at large having each others’ backs. It’s one of the reasons the D2R discussions and the vitriol D2R discussions here created are so problematic for me.

On one hand, I get the desire to have players discuss things in what are seen as the “appropriate” venues. On the other hand, the schism that created stands in stark contrast to what we saw with the community trying to resolve this situation. It just feels like we’re being selectively kind to each other, kind of like fair weather friends. If we really want situations like this to go away, we can’t be like that. We can’t have it both ways and still have a functional community.

My point here is this: You’re glad that this got resolved, but it took a level of comraderie that was anything but present for the last two months. Just like console players felt pushed out by Blizzard for the last few years, D2R players (especially console players that posted here since they couldn’t post in the paywalled forum) felt locked out as well. And while Blizzard does seem to prefer reddit, probably due to the whacked moderation and post burying that goes on there to hide players’ views, it isn’t fair to cajole players trying to communicate here into going there into an even worse “community”.

We either have each others’ backs all the time, or it’s just a farce put on for show. Any kind of sympathy we show for Meteorblade should be the norm for all players in all situations. Otherwise, it isn’t real.

I usually keep my flags (or yellow cards for the other football fans) in my back pocket unless someone really steps over the line as happened here.
When 2 or 3 people take over a thread and turn it into private room, I tend to just stop reading.

I think its more the case where we are talking about a prominent member of the forum, (meaning fairly active, lots of posts, etc.)

Someone that has 5 posts to their name and get copy catted are going to be less likely to have other forum members go to the mat for them as they would if they were a long time active member.

That might suck, but its the truth.

Were someone to copy you, or me or any of the 100s of others that are active on a fairly often basis, that might result with similar responses.

I certainly wouldn’t expect it, and I suspect that Meteor didn’t either, but we are thankful something was changed, again, whether that was a voluntary change from the person, or forced changed by the forum mods, I don’t know. But I felt it was warranted.

Should this be something that is properly acted on every time? Probably not. In this particular instance there was pretty convincing evidence of a form of harassment. Second it wasn’t merely a mistake of “oops I picked the same name” They willfully changed the name they had to match one of the forum, as well as change avatars and a number of other factors.

Not sure there is a have it both ways with a community. The community will stick up for those that the community is willing to stick up for. That doesn’t mean everyone.

While we might as a whole be open to nearly anyone with regards to helping them out, posts that go for troll behavior, inciting anger, or anything along those lines are going to get that poster mentally on a list of forum members to avoid or distance yourself from.

Such as a community of people often do.

I always give 99% of the posters the benefit of the doubt in most cases, even if I suspect they might be trolling, because that is how we want to be. But the minute we figure out you are a troll, you are probably a troll for life, even if you try to change.

Anyway.

Just a thought. Or few.

Game on.

I think it’s an indication of a long-term ban, if not permanent. Definitely done by a Blizzguy. Also happens when someone uses an offensive btag.

That may be, I’m not up-to-date on how forum bans work unfortunately.

I feel like this is hinting at the tolerance paradox and basically that if someone is nice/defend/etc. to one person, then they should be nice to everyone. The reality is that there are some behaviors and beliefs that are toxic even if the people performing them or espousing them don’t believe they are. Part of flipping the switch toward not tolerating such actions is precisely and ideally to teach them that X is not okay.

The internet being what it is, however, being a social mongoloid is unlikely to have any meaningful ramifications. And as much as certain groups like to wail and rant about echo chambers, safe spaces, misappropriate the 1st amendment, or try to play the cancel culture card, they tend to both be crying wolf and overlook their own offenses because, to them, they’re not.

How this correlates to the Diablo community, or any gaming community, is important because whether we like it or not, certain political statements and moral codes wind up in what we play. The divide within D2 and D3, or even if D2R should “modernize” brings out these perspectives and ultimately reveals whatever layers of ego, selfishness, altruism, empathy, and so on that they may have. It’s been my experience that those who wax their fanaticism or perceived status as a top (or “more skilled”) player should not be tolerated to behave as they do because they thrive on gatekeeping, derision, and other negative social traits. Some may even try to talk a good game and you’ll see zingers like “making choices matter” for the player, but it’s not difficult to see the desire to exert control over those they’ll never interact with if you look hard enough, while certain stances even wind up contradicting (Such as the choice dilemma curbing experimentation and discovery, thus identity).

Of course, this particular situation of imitation is more meta level. It wasn’t about the game. It was about trying to discredit a player of the game by being a fool and hoping the less aware fell for it. It’s true that DI or D2R announcements had people coming here who normally wouldn’t to try and impress their beliefs, but I’d also say the discontent of the D3 community was valid because Blizzard never got off their butt to make forum sections exclusively for that purpose at the time. When you see enough “Why do you want to play this crap game?” “Only babies like D3!” “D3 isn’t a Diablo game!” or other flavors of “feedback” on the very game’s board, it should come as no surprise that some folks may want none of it. And this has been true as far back as launch where some of our most vocal haters conveniently happen to have multiple accounts that go untouched over years of trolling because some outside CS mod won’t know the story of the community or even why people find their behavior loathsome.

Basically, not everything has a “both sides” to it and trying to pretend otherwise is why we’re generally knee deep in demon dung.

Who knows, maybe the next Diablo 3 update, we’ll see a “MeteorBlade” item being added to the game

Haven’t you seen the latest data-mining results?

Meteorblade’s Primaliser

Converts an ancient legendary item into a primal ancient legendary item with the same affixes as the ancient and allows rerolling of all affixes of the item at the Mystic. Also makes you a nice big mug of tea whenever you fancy one.

Please note: this post was made using the comedy font.

The Meteorblade:

  • +1000 to Knowledge
  • Summons a forum post to a random location every 3 minutes

It is rumoured that the powers of this blade can be unlocked using a large quantity of a secret liquid that is said to have a faint odor of citrus.

I think you’re getting mixed up with the Blade of Bergamotℱ

Meteorblade for MVP

I would refer you to this

Yes, his name really was Lyndon.

Did he do any dirty fighting in Kingsport?
