Inventory, wardrobe and sets

Ok, I know inventory has been discussed often. But in these days where storage is cheap, the user interface could really use some help to assist with inventory. Specifically, it would be nice to store sets’ items in the wardrobe and not in general inventory. When a season runs, even the new inventory spaces get full. If you provide space in the wardrobe to have multiple setups, have multiple sets available per character type but no space to actually store them it’s quite frustrating. By storing the sets and items used in the wardrobe instead of general inventory, you essentially make it possible to use multiple sets for each of your characters. Items shared between characters and/or set builds could have an icon mentioning that. When a shared item is in inventory, it’s much more likely to be deleted. Nobody can possibly remember every item used in every toon and every one of their sets.

This method will also reduce junk stored. I can never tell which items are used by who, and it seems every time I destroy one it ends up it was used by one of my other characters’ sets. So I save more than I need.

I’ve been a software developer at most top companies and played Diablo since I purchased Diablo 1 in the 90s. Inventory has always been a huge issue. It would be really nice for Blizzard to solve this issue finally after 30 years of game play.

blows the dust off of the dead horse carcass

Ahem.

With regards to the inventory system, there is nothing that can be changed at this point without breaking the game (as they found out when they initially attempted to give us more space a few years back) and without having to recode the entire game engine around it which frankly this game will not see.

Its not as simple as you might think, otherwise they would have already given us more space.

Whether its stored in the stash, or stored in the wardrobe, its still stored someplace.

It is rumored that part of the problem was how the game was initially designed with the Auction House being built into the game.

They had to write the code for the gear to all have unique IDs, so there was no way to duplicate items (at least on PC). The problem is, there is a data limit (of some fashion) to how the system stores every single instanced item. Both in non-season, Hardcore, and Seasonal. Every item gets a unique ID, even though the AH is long gone.

As they increased the stash space and more people filled those spaces, they were seeing performance issues on their side of the system. And when they initially added more stash tabs on a PTR test, they saw increased performance issues, so they scaled it back to where we ended up now.

That is more or less the common thinking, but as to how accurate that is, I can’t say. None of us are privy to the exact setup, configuration or how all of this is setup to work.

But I hope it helps answer the question, or at least gives some insight to the problem.

we don’t need to guess why they can’t give us more stash space, because they told us.It’s not the auction house, diablo 4 never had it and they have the same problem for the same reason.Whenever you group with other players all the items in your inventory and stash is loaded into their memory and their inventory and stash is loaded into your memory.

It would be nice if they could add a second character specific stash that was only in your memory. However it’s too late the game is in maintenance mode now and there won’t be any more changes.

Well, this would have told you that

wouldn’t work. From what they have told us, the issue is all 4 players stashes are loaded into memory, and if they add another tab, the game, internet, and life as we know it will explode in a ball of flames. Storing items in the Armory does nothing to relieve this because the items are still in an inventory.

Ya, this has been my solution for years. Have 8 universal stash tabs that all characters access, and 5 class specific tabs that only that class can access. This way, you could potentially have 43 tabs of total storage space, but only 13 tabs are loaded into memory whenever a character enters the game.

How do we pin in BIG BOLD WRITING when you click into the D3 forums that the game is in maintenance mode, to stop people wasting their time by making these useless posts?

Funny thing it seems they reused same-ish stash code for D4, and since there are more people running around in one instance, there is even less stash space in D4 compared to DIII… This is about the fact that whenever you open your inventory in D3, it loads into everyone elses memory that is in the same instance, and vice versa.
At least on your character in D4 you have different tabs (for keys, consumables etc.)

On another note. Since you have nine seasonal heroes and season ends this Sunday it is a good idea to clean up the shared stash (the big chest in each base camp) - especially if it’s full of stuff that will not be needed anymore. The inventory, the place where the stuff that is picked up while playing and placed in each character’s personal “bag” (seen when pressing “I”), can be used to store valuable stuff in the season turnover and avoid the stash tetris with all the seasonal stuff in the mail.

I 100% agree with you DTMAce, but I it does raise another question just for the sake of beating that dead horse: Since D3 is practically dead and only a small portion of it’s player base remains, could they add more stash tabs now without taxing the game resources? Or are the restrictions based on each individual player. I suspect they just rather not deal with it since it’s in maintance mode.

I don’t have an answer to that.

We don’t really know the metric of how the system interacts to what level it starts causing issues.

And I suspect the latter will be the case. Not much point to devoting any real time into looking into the issue anyway.

Here’s the thing though:

Even with my main character of choice being the Demon Hunter, if I wanted to, I could put all the DH gear entirely into two DH character inventories and not have any of it stored in the stash. I only keep the best choices of gear and salvage everything else anyway.

And with the other classes I can put ALL of their items on those characters again not having to store those items in the stash.

If I spent time in non-season more than the tetris game at the end of the season, I would always have at least 4 empty tabs, maybe even 5, without a problem. Right now, I have too many follower items as I haven’t spent time getting rid of extras for them. I could easily clear another tab or more if I purged follower gear.

The number of tabs we have is sufficient, even if you account for wanting to have some customized setups and multiple options.

Agreed. The only time I have a storage issue is with my HC characters since I keep multiple full gear sets in case of death, and a bit of nostalgia to keep certain items, but even then, since I rarely play NS, its a bit of a mute point and mainly a hoarding issue. I was just wondering. Thanks for the reply.
