Since I don’t play NS, I’ve been having to farm the Staff of Herding twice every season… until today!
It finally happened. Which means: it could happen to YOU as well! Don’t give up hope, my friends.

Congratulations!
Shunine Lollipops? What flavor is that?
Use it with pride
It’s a new Baskin Robbins flavour created to celebrate D3 in maintenance mode… tastes like cow dung
Yeah, I been after that little teddy bear barstard for years. I won’t use the rainbow frame, I just want it in my collection. I use the “It’s What You Get” plain one–I don’t wanna seem pretentious. (FYI, I never wear wings, neither–Nephalem can’t fly!)
Curious how you know what cow dung tastes like…
Maybe I don’t want to know…

You certainly like to torture yourself don’t you? Even though you don’t “play” NS - why didn’t you just craft one on NS anyway, and farm the frame when you’re bored of seasonal activities?
Seems very illogical to only do this in Seasons. You would have had it WAYYYYY earlier, and wouldn’t have to waste time farming up a second staff every season.
Why make life more challenging than it has to be?
I wouldn’t need to craft one - the staff passes into NS, in case you’ve forgotten.
Possibly, but logic isn’t even a significant factor in most decisions that most living organisms make on the daily. If you want logic to rule your life, consider reincarnating as a Vulcan.
I disagree. I managed to farm two complete staves within opening season weekend. Two days’ worth of time “wasted” every 3 months, isn’t exactly tanking my efficiency. There’s also never any guarantee - there are people who’ve gotten the portrait literally without trying, at all. They just happened to be there with other people, or popped in there “just for fun” and got it. And, there are others who’ve probably farmed longer than me, and still haven’t gotten it to drop to this day.
Because I choose to.
I’ve played Diablo 4
(OK, that was crueler than what it needed to be but the build from the beta really did leave a bad taste in my mouth but the QoL in D4 at the time should have been better than what we had in D3. And it was even down to simple things like max of 12 letter names, only 2 character slots per class, and a stash that was in no way adequate for the itemisation system for 10 characters at the time)
From the point of view of efficiency just to get the rainbow portrait… yeah, doing it in NS would have been better.
From the point of view of potentially getting some resources and gear for Seasonal progress though, doing it in seasons is a no brainer.
In one of the past seasons, I farmed up the Harvest pennant and one of the other white cosmetics in the same area. Was glad I did it in seasons as I also got some good gear and resources in the process… it took a lot of runs to get both. I found Harvest first and in the process of trying to get the white cosmetic, I’d find the elite who drops Harvest a couple more times. Had I done this in NS, there would have been bugger all clan members who could have jumped in to get Harvest (why let a find go to waste?).
I’ve heard “good things” from Season 4, but (and it’s a BIG BUT, I will not lie, you otha brotha’s can’t deny) I’ve also heard Season 4 is LITERALLY “just” their equivalent of Loot 2.0. Like, there’s some sort of Iron Wolves side show going on that literally nobody cares about, and the entire rest of it is just literally a reboot to get it where it SHOULD have been at launch.
And in a short while, we’ll be back to the “odd” season team who have an established track record of complete and utter failure in every single regard. And, on top of that, we’ll be approaching expansion release windows by the time “even” season rolls around again.
I’m not touching that game until a FULL season IN the expansion starts. IF it’s still “good things” at that point, maybe I’ll give D4 another shot IF I don’t have to buy the full expansion just to experience the “good things.” I’m emphatically against annual subscriptions in my ARPG’s.
This is exactly it. I have zero interest in playing D3 without Altar, therefore I play Seasons. But even though that first part about farming efficiency is true, that still doesn’t mean I HAVE to be logical. It’s a game where we kill Death and I’m not exactly racing the leaderboards. No need to be super cereal, ya know?
nice well done, still struggling to get that myself
After many, many runs, I still haven’t had the portrait or cosmic wings. I have long since given up. Given my traditional uber bad RNG luck, it will take tens of thousands of runs of either situation for them to drop for me and I can’t be bothered. They are the only 2 xmogs/portraits etc in the game that I haven’t found.
if the average run is say, ~300 or so for the cosmic rings, and I’m at 2000+ runs already, then I simply refuse to invest more time into it.
This was my impression as well.
If I was to rate D4 as a game without all the expectation that has built up over the past decade plus from playing D3, I would have probably rated it pretty high.
But I’m not a fresh Diablo player. I’m one who has stuck with the previous entry for the entirety of its life and knows the short comings and what should have been addressed before D4 was released (at least for the game to be enjoyable for me). This is unfortunate for the D4 team as I’m sure they put their heart and soul into making as good a game as they could.
I heard that the D4 team recycled the code for stash and inventory management from D3 to D4 due to time constraints… if that’s true, then a critical backbone of the ARPG experience for me is gimped from the start which is no way to lay a foundation for a new game to grow.
I personally think this itemisation patch is partially a response to the limitations of the stash and inventory system and how much it can hold.
I’m not a fan of subscriptions either. Never touched WOW for that reason.
Hell, I won’t even leave my annual prepaid mobile plan on auto renew
I’m really not sure D4 can ever live up to what I want from an ARPG. I’m the type of player who likes to focus on my progress over the life of a game and D4 has continued with the stupid stance Blizzard had with D3 seasons being a fresh start only experience. For me to be invested in D4, the game would have to:
That’s fine. I was just being a silly billy anyway. Though, I’m still rooting for the wings to pop for you on a random rainbow without you even thinking about it
Took the words right out of my keyboard.
I don’t remember if it was a literal quote of a dev saying it verbatim, or if it was just inferred from one of their weasel-worded explanations on why we couldn’t have nice things, but the basic premise is D4 acts a LOT like D3 behind the scenes according to various “white hat” dataminers and tinkerers that populate reddit and twitter. And it’s not just the inventory system that draws such interesting similarities.
Fair.
At this point, they may have lost me for good. I definitely won’t spend money on D4 anymore unless they somehow turn it into “IMPOSSIBRU” levels awesome, akin to how the expac + necro turned D3 around. But even then, ANNUAL paid expansions? I have yet to see a SINGLE game franchise EVER retain even a modicum of creativity when pushed to an annual content clock like that. It didn’t work with Madden, it didn’t work with CoD, it didn’t work with Pokemon, it didn’t work with Assassin’s Creed.
They’re all PROFITABLE, but so is rat poison.
All good, but prolly unlikely. I’m a very unlucky person at the best of times.
sorry, but it’s a steaming pile of you know what. If I could get a refund, I’d take it.
