We all know that feeling of getting yet another unusable primal. The rollercoaster of emotions from excitement when you see the red glow, and the pentagram on the minimap, to the realization that it doesn’t fit your main build. But you keep it anyways thinking hey maybe ill use it for another build one day. Only for having it mailed to you at the end of the season completely forgetting about it.
Now hear me out. We shouldn’t have primal drops. Instead, we should have a token of sorts (Maybe similar to ramaladni’s gift) that allows us to transform an item of our choosing to primal.
The first and obvious problem with this is that everyone will have perfect gear in less than a week of playing and the season will be over quite fast for a majority of players.
A solution to this is to could to make the drop even rarer. Currently, at least from what I could gather up there is a 1/400 chance for a primal drop. Now that doesn’t mean its gonna be a good primal because there are around 400 unique legendaries in the game. So maybe make it something like 1/10000? Don’t fixate on the numbers too much, but the general idea of it.
Another solution would be to make it recipe 11 in the cube that players have to grind for similar to augments.
I think it would make the grind more worthwhile knowing that whenever that primal drops it’s guaranteed to be what you were looking for.
Let me know what you guys think, or how this could be improved!

At this point, i would settle for not finding a useless legendary. Never mind Primals… just so much trash legendaries that nobody uses for any class/ spec. So much garbage that doesn’t get played because everyone is almost forced into the sets to play the way Blizz wants you to play, or if you want to be an outlier, you can play LoN…

The fix is D4 with a whole new itemization model that doesn’t rely this much on luck

Interesting idea. I would prefer to be able to melt down a few (say 25) useless primals to get a single reroll for a primal that you already have; this way useless primals at least give you the hope of a better one! Or if adding a new material is too much work then, simply add a recipe to allow you to reroll a primal with Forgotten Souls (say 10K or 25K FSs for 1 reroll).

I mostly do LoN/LoD. It so much more fun than doing what “I’m told to do”.

How about if this token drop of yours is same drop rate as primal BUT the token itself also has an RNG factor probability in making an item primal. Not as easy to get that perfect roll option as well but the presence of a chance
What about that feeling of finding NO primals? Seriously, 1 primal this season, and that was from first solo GR70. That’s it…
I know the vast majority of primals are useless, but it would be nice to find one every now and then, on ocassion.

15 souls. Even better are the primals that have been made obsolete with every patch. Its all just mats at this point.
My stance has pretty much been that the Mystic can swap multiple affixes, but at exponential costs.
Just example numbers:
First affix: 10 parts/dust/crystals + 1 soul per attempt
Second affix: 20 parts/dust/crystals + 2 souls per attempt
Third affix: 40 parts/dust/crystals + 4 souls per attempt
Fourth affix: 80 parts/dust/crystals + 8 souls per attempt
Fifth affix: 160 parts/dust/crystals + 16 souls per attempt
Sixth affix: 320 parts/dust/crystals + 32 souls per attempt
While this doesn’t solve the problem of getting a primal for an item you’ll never use, it does guarantee that a primal you do want to use is eventually fixable should it drop with garbage stats.
People have been wanting unwanted primals to break down into a unique material, too, typically for some cube recipe that’d better guarantee making a primal there. I’d also be okay with integrating that concept with the above where you’d need to sacrifice 5 unwanted primals to unlock the remainder affixes after the first. Granted, I also know some items have more than 6 affixes, so costs can increase in kind.
3 primals rerolls to 1 new primal. Works for me

Why do some primal’s drop with no legendary ability, I no longer get excited for primal’s.
They hardly ever drop for me and when they do they are mostly junk.

Bad drops/rolls are part of the game. Outside of farming from monsters, we have a way to roll one stat on an item, reforging items and upgrading rares, I feel that’s enough. Anything beyond this would be just more pampering for those who don’t like the grind, which is a big part of Diablo.
Giving more avenues of turning bad drops into good ones makes it less rewarding when a good item does drop.
I just got a Templar Token primal. “Access to all skills”.

But it also gives a bit of determinism over the fate of your character.
Right now, if you do 1 GR or 1000 GRs, you haven’t made any progress if the items you need haven’t dropped. You get no credit for time spent towards building your toon save the ability to salvage a bunch of worthless gear to earn more tokens for more RNG.
Ideally, you build things over time, but time is no guarantee of success outside of Paragon.

Each season, this strange thing happen to me: i get 4+ of the one same item primal. Sometimes in a row. This season the invisible lottery picked mighty “blackthorne leggins” i already have 3 exemplars (i’ll keep the best one for lulz and will hope that in next patch this set gets tweaked) . Least season i got 5x blackguard (2h useless sword) and two of them dropped together in GR . I was: “OMG what a luck” when i saw those red beams, and than i was “OMG WTF”… Other primals were only in one exemplar each. Does anyone else have the same experience?

Meh. The game is about grind, getting useless items is part of it. In my opinion saying “Primals should only be useful to my build” is like saying “all legendaries should be applicable to top tier builds”. Really man how few hours do you want to spend on your build? Is 12 hours to get your full 6 piece and around 20-30 to get basic versions of all 13 BiS not enough?
Saying primals get you so excited as if they are this amazing build defining item and then also complaining that you don’t find them all the time is just weird to me. If you always found them then you wouldn’t get excited. It is like when ancients were first introduced and we saw that gold border and thought holy crap yes and now you need them in every slot to get to good high GR’s. Want primals to also become the “must have” in all 13 slots? Want people to say “Damn I don’t have all 13 primals my build isn’t good yet at all”? There has to be some big grind in the game otherwise its not Diablo.
What I do feel though is that even though it is fine to get ones that are useless there should still be this excited feeling when you get one knowing that you can get something great for salvaging even if it is a damn Blackthorne’s boots. Salvaging should give a bunch of all materials or bounty mats or something. 15 forgotten souls? You get that in like less than ten minutes if you are doing speed GR’s.
Hah, suckers. I have had around 10 primal drop and one of those was a primal azura sword for my frenzy! That’s right, it dropped. Didn’t have to spend hours grinding bounties and to top it off, it rolled with vitality instead of strength!..
We can’t all be winners but I sure was. Good luck next season boys and girls, maybe find a new spot to prospect. There’s still gold in them there hills.
Primals shouldn’t become mandatory items right. So there’s a balance to achieve here. My recommendation is to allow re-roll of x2 affixes versus the standard 1. That way if it’s a non-trash legendary you can (in theory) make it really nice.
Dude I got that last season on my Frenzy Barb, perfect stats too. And the other weapon perfect stat primal too (can’t remember the other one’s name now). And the Azure was from one of those random weapon rack type things in a regular rift.
I am pretty damn sure that counts as very lucky to get with a bit over 100 hours of play.
