How to stop auto-joining public chat?

A google-search revealed that this is, seemingly, a very old issue… but finding a solution is another matter. Apparently, there’s been threads made about it here before, but while google insist that they’re here, those topics cannot actually be found. I did find a workaround on Reddit, but it didn’t work for me, so I’m requesting suggestions here… hoping that THIS thread doesn’t spontaneously go missing.

The issue is this: I joined General Chat ONCE, more or less by accident. Now, every time I log in, I’m automatically thrown into General Chat. Even if I leave, I just get auto-joined to it NEXT time again, and next time, and next time. Gah! Well, the workaround I found suggested that I should join a DIFFERENT public chat, then leave General Chat, then leave the new one, and that should solve the problem. It didn’t. Now, I’m just stuck auto-joining that NEW channel (in this case, Necromancer Chat) every time I log in. It’s maddening!

Surely, there must be something that can be done to stop this annoyance…

Working as it is supposed to. Did you try “Leave Chat” ?

Did you even read my post? I can leave, yes, but I have to do so EVERY TIME I log in. And don’t tell me it’s ‘working as intended’ - it wasn’t doing this until I accidentally touched the general chat ONCE, and it then decided on its own to keep throwing me in there regardless of my say so forevermore. That’s not a feature, that’s how a computer-virus works…

I am wondering if this is a troll thread, because I left general chat years ago and never had any problems at all. Somehow I do believe that you haven’t really left general chat. Where what you have done is joined the channel and turned it off instead of leaving it entirely.

Well, then, how DO you leave? Because it apparently doesn’t involve the ‘Leave Chat’ option, as one would logically assume. I’m not surprised that it didn’t happen to you - as I said at the very start, it’s very clearly a BUG. An old, still-unfixed bug, which also suggests that it’s the sort that’s hard to replicate.

Look… I’ll do a step-by-step, like in a real bug-report.

1: Join Public Chat > General (General Chat is added)
2: Leave Chat > General (General Chat is removed)
3: Log out > Log back in (General Chat is automatically joined)

Repeat steps 2-3 ad nauseum. Oh, and of course, as my later experiments revealed, if I join a DIFFERENT public chat, and then leave both, I’ll wind up getting auto-joined to the NEW one instead. Which isn’t very helpful since I just want to NOT BE IN ANY PUBLIC CHAT.

I hate it when technology does something it wasn’t asked to do on some strange assumption that it knows your mind better than you do - and when it does something I’ve SPECIFICALLY ASKED IT NOT TO DO, it drives me absolutely bonkers. This is how the Rise of the Machines start, I swear…

(As a side-note, I suppose I probably should put this in the ‘Bug report’ forum, but considering how long it’s been around, that seems exceedingly pointless. I just want to know if anyone has any work-arounds I can use to get CLEAR of it!)

If something as simple as being joined into a public chat accidentally is “maddening”, you may need to take a break from the game for a bit. Just saying. If you are going to get put into a chat, even unwillingly, join one that should be a ghost town like “brawling” and then you should never see any chat to interfere with your gameplay.

Well, like I said, technology misbehaving in this exact fashion is a particular bugbear of mine. That, and I’m under quite a bit of stress right now. Diablo’s supposed to be the way I unwind and de-stress, y’know? Having THAT suddenly refuse to do as it’s told just seems like adding insult to injury…

I suppose your idea has some merit, too. If nothing less, I can use it until I find some way to snap the game out of it altogether…

Click on the gear above your chats, click leave chat.
General chat is only for bots and spammers selling D3 accounts.
Get out of there.

…for anyone interested (who actually bothered to read my entire post), I finally managed to get rid of this bothersome bug. Not ENTIRELY sure how I did it, though. I created a Clan (with a membership of one), then left the (automatically-joined) public chat, the clan chat, and two community-chat channels I’m normally in, before finally quitting the game. When I signed in again, the game had FINALLY gotten the message, and didn’t add me to any chats whatsoever. I was then free to disband my clan, and put the two community-chats back in effect.

Phew… not sure which part of all that did the trick, but hey, all’s well that ends well, or so they say. (My suspicion is that the perfectly-legitimate auto-join used by any active clans/communities you are in somehow causes the game to sometimes get confused and consider your most recently-used public channel to be one of them too. Hence, removing any ‘legitimate’ auto-join-on-signup prevents the bug from occurring, ending the cycle. But that’s just a theory…)
