How to not loose progress

I’m playing a regular seasonal game. I’m finding it very frustrating, even annoying, that each night when I finish playing I logout of the game but the next day all progress that I’ve made in the current zone seems to have vanished, the zone has reset to ‘as new’. Is there a “correct” way to exit for the day but keep my progress?

The game always resets to “as new” after logging off. It’s always a “new” game every time.
Your progress is kept in your experience level and, after you hit 70, your paragon levels.

Ok, that, imo, is pretty dumb. I just spent about 90 minutes doing a lot of a level, then I had to take the dog out, came back, the game had logged out, I logged back in and the level had reset and I lost all that time and effort. That’s crazy.

What do you mean by “level?” It shouldn’t take you that long for rifts or bounties, unless you are just wasting time.

I don’t see what difference it should make how long I want to take, I’m not in any rush and I should be able to take my time and clear everything if I want.
Anyway, I used the term Level meaning (I suppose) Act. I’m currently doing Act 5 Battlefields of Eternity, collecting runes. This area is pretty big with a number of side dungeons that I want to clear and I haven’t come across any checkpoints. Unfortunately I can’t persuade my puppy that she needs to keep her legs crossed until I finish, and nor should I need to. If I want to take a break in playing for whatever reason I should be able to without the game logging me out and clearing all my progress.

Game progress is only retained in Campaign Mode. This can be considered “Quest Mode” or “Main Story Line Mode”. And there are a few ways you can end your game session and come back to pick up where you left off.

  • End a Quest, but before starting the next Quest.
  • When reaching the next Waypoint, before exploring further.
  • At Checkpoints.

Adventure Mode is a kind of “open world” Mode in the sense that you can go anywhere in the game world at any time and do anything you want. There are no Quests. There are only Events and Objectives. You can choose to do Bounties, Rifts, Greater Rifts or just explore the world as you see fit. Because of this, the game resets its areas and content whenever you leave a game session, whether intentionally or through disconnection. This should not be an issue because, in Adventure Mode, your only purpose should be leveling your Character, farming better gear, increasing your currency, etc. And, if you’re playing in Adventure Mode with a Seasonal Character, you may also be completing Season Journey Objectives. Tip: In Adventure Mode while doing Bounties, it is to your benefit to complete all 5 Bounties in an Act before ending your game session so you can collect your reward from Tyrael when you turn it in. But, you do not have to complete all 5 Acts in one game session.

As far as “losing your progression” from a disconnection… Well, in Adventure Mode, you don’t have any “progression” to lose. The game resetting when you Leave Game or quit your game session is a good thing. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to farm areas multiple times. The only time it may be frustrating is if you’re in the middle of completing Bounties and get disconnected before you can finish the Bounties for the Act you’re in, causing you to lose the reward from Tyrael.

And Battle․net has always disconnected inactive players. Players can go AFK for ~20 minutes before being disconnected from the game. This allows players to take care of bathroom breaks or other needs and still get back to their current game session. If you anticipate needing longer than this, you should find a place to stop, even if you don’t end your game session. Then, if you come back to find yourself disconnected, you won’t lose your Bounty, Rift or Greater Rift reward(s).
Good luck and good hunting!

When I said level, I meant character level not the area in which you were playing.

This makes more sense.

If you are quitting a game session intentionally, you should not be losing any progress. This is easily tested by mousing over your Experience Bar and noting your current XP earned. Then, leave or quit your game. When you restart, check your XP again to see that you retained your XP from the previous game session. (See image below).

If you’re being disconnected, then it is possible that you are losing some Character leveling progression. That’s because any progress has stopped the second you get disconnected from Blizzard’s server. But, it should not be enough to bump you down a Level. And you might only notice that your Experience Bar seems to be a segment or two lower than what you remembered it to be before you went AFK. However, that would also mean that you got disconnected before you walked away from the keyboard.

Note: Some disconnections happen immediately. Some may take up to 2 minutes before the game, from the client side, notifies you of the disconnection. Sometimes you may get disconnected momentarily and then get reconnected before you’re booted out of the game, allowing you to continue to play.
