How is Deckard Cain Alive in Diablo Immortal yet dies in D3?

How is it that the NPC Deckard Cain who in Diablo III dies in Act I, yet lives on in Diablo Immortal. I think D3 came out in 2013, awhile ago. I started playing it then & just started taking it up a few months ago. In the meantime (little more than a year), I started playing Diablo Immortal & there is Deckard Cain again in the digital flesh. What gives?

I think D3 came out in 2013, awhile ago.

Thanks for the answer to my question. I guess the whole notion of the “cycle of strife” is just an afterthought as I don’t remember that in D2.
