[Guide] Zodiac Rend (Season 20)

In the process of upgrading yellow MWs in the cube to try and get a good Fjord Cutter, I actually ended up with 8(!) ancient Ambo’s… and only one Fjord Cutter.

I tested 30% ancient Sunkeeper in place of DB. AP+SK combo is fun in speeds due to 80% elite bonus (even 95% with BotP), but ends up inferior to AP+DB and IBx2 due to lowest white mob damage and lowest speed out of the three.

So I found this little gem when I was trying to research life on hit,

in patch 2.4 wirlwind has had a change in its interaction with attack speed: instead of attacking faster, a higher attack speed makes it more expensive, but deal more damage.

Does anyone know if this is still the case? If so how does it work with lamentation and rend stacking twice if whirlwind hits only once per second? I know attack speed does nothing for rend, but I thought it made whirlwind attack faster, and thus let rend stack twice?

I need your RNG sir, because I have several ancient Fjord Cutter’s lurking in my stash now from the same exercise and 0 Ambo’s :frowning:. I do have a nice Doombringer at the ready so as soon as I do get an Ambo’s I’ll be trying it out.
For now I’ve been sticking with BK’s using Hurricane and StPS for healing since I can’t drop BoM yet to free up a spot for Rage Flip due to low paragon/no augment toughness issues. I’ve been surprisingly impressed with how well Hurricane is working especially with regards to sucking things into Oculus. So far in season i have 118 down and the rift I got on 116 would have been good for 121 if I had keyed for it.

Correct. You want to avoid speccing useless skills on your follower since it will slow down their casting of the useful skills.

I totally get the concept, but I’m just questioning this particular instance since heal is on a 30 second cool down, and loyalty/inspire are passive skills.

Would not heal just be cast as needed every 30s regardless?

Also if we run Ambos and Doombringer. We need to run windshear correct? Or can we keep blood funnel and change a passive to the one that gives fury on hit?

Put ambos in main hand and run weapons master passive

Awesome. Thank you. Will keep running my ancient IB set for time being until i get decent ambos and doombringer

So uh… what’s the best potion to use with this build?

Side note to this 2H journey that I’m on.

I’ve been using Ambo’s and Primal Odyn’s Son w/ Lacerate, cubed Furnace. I have too say that it runs really good.

Resist all potion or koolaid

Hmm… intriguing… I’ve got a primal Doombringer tucked away on one of my non-seasonal heroes somewhere. Might have to see if I can get a decent Ambo’s for equipping and test this combo out.

[ EDIT ]
Just got a primal Ambo’s drop on my season 19 Barb. I guess I’ll have to wait until season ends to combine that with the primal Doombringer and see what carnage that generates.

Oh my. Just destroyed ancient doombringer :frowning:

Can someone explain to me how to use ancient spear (rage flip) I never really use it, and I wonder how you should utilize this skill efficiently for it to work in greater rift because I don’t really see myself using it at all, and I do want to learn how to use it if it can help me.

He/ She is Rend HC and isn’t pausing one second for AD to proc, but you can still see AD procs all around him / her. By the amount of damage being done, I have to assume that it’s Rend causing those proccs.

What? There’s no way you’re identifying AD procs amidst all that chaos. Remember that Rend can’t crit, so all its damage number are going to show up as white. You’re just seeing Rend damage. Any yellow damage you’re seeing is from WW or Spear.

Also, there’s no reason it should take a full second for AD to proc. Rend ticks several times a second. Like I said before, if you press HC Rend, it’s possible you might get one tick of AD before you overwrite.

And let me clarify / repeat something else: you can do a ton of AD with this build if you just spam HC Rend over and over, tapping WW every 3 seconds to refresh Wastes 4. There are a couple reasons I think this is not ideal:

#1) It’s a terrible playstyle.
#2) You’ll die.

Now, if you are playing in a group, and have supports to both gather density and keep you alive, #2 doesn’t apply, in which case you can do an absolute truckload of damage by just sitting in density and spamming HC Rend. (Also, note that this is the best way to deal damage whenever you have a Shield pylon active. Since you can’t take damage, you can sit in density and spam HC Rend till you’re blue in the face.)

That still leaves #1, however.

Man, those maps. Crazy. Level 2 especially. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many mothers on such a small level before.

I don’t disagree with anything your saying, as I said earlier, I’m just assuming as we’re all trying to figure this out.

I agree, it could happen on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd… tick, it’s a crapshoot. I sense that I might have slightly setup you and that was not my intention. And I hope you know that I’m not trying to mislead anyone. I throw things out for thought, but I’m open for correction.

Edit: I thought I saw little explosions, but I guess I was wrong. It is pretty chaotic.

It’s fine, man. I wasn’t trying to come off as harsh, it’s just that I’ve tested this stuff a good bit at this point, and I’d really like people to get a clear view of how the mechanics seem to work.

I’m certainly open to having my mind changed / being proved wrong, but I’d really prefer that there be significant evidence showing something contrary to my investigations.

If you’re interested in playing an AD-centric build, there’s no reason you can’t… just load up 100+% AD, and, once you’ve gathered density, maybe try HC-ing Rend for 2 seconds, then WWing for 2 seconds. That might strike a decent balance between the two skills.
