Offer them respect and a higher pay rate, not like the company can’t afford it. Miss the good content and updates that had been in the pipeline which mysteriously vanished as the devs quit. Some even have youtubes saying they might be open to work together if some agreement was reached I think.
What content and updates were in the pipeline? What are they saying on youtube?
David Kim was for sure a big big loss.
Not really sure old designers would be good for the current state of the game. What you need are new designers with old aesthetics.
Pretty sure game creating for any larger studio is a fairly horrid work environment. Crunch time is not a good thing, at all.
Sure thing, Bravata 2.0…
great post well done
Game recognizes game
Saying they should bring back Jay Wilson would’ve been funnier
I agree with this. Our work culture/environment these days are centralized around type “A” personalities. This personality type is driven by greed (in my opinion) and results in mistakes, temporary success, selfishness, and inevitably, in most cases, leads to a business’s demise. If only we could get back to a work culture/environment that has a good mix of type “A” and type “B” personalities. But, again, in my opinion, with our current social dynamic it seems like these two personality types clash heads more often than not, rather than complimenting each other.
It’s not about personality types though. It’s really the protestant work ethic that envelops much if American work culture. Too many workers would sacrifice their own health and work life balance to show their employers that they more valuable.
I used to know guys that would complain about the 60-70 hour work weeks we had but never used their vacations because they didn’t want to be seen as lazy.
i was under the impression that virtually all game developer companies are like that. maybe its not about sexual abuse or harassment but, they can still be overworked, underpaid, get no credit, and whatnot.
Change that to most American workplaces. Especially non union shops. Most are viewed as replaceable units that only effect the bottom line too much. Productivity has skyrocketed in the last 30 years or so on non automated jobs with wages being rather stagnant when compared to profit and executive compensation growth.
I understand where you are coming from but what you stated in your post is the definition of a type “A” personality. Your work ethic is a direct reflection of your personality type.
I am a b type and have a work ethic like no other. I just don’t worl to live, and take care of my body and mind. A type doesn’t mean one negates reason, health, and safety just to look good for the boss.
It’s more often those that feel inadequate or insecure that choose to do this. I did everything to succeed in all my jobs except be unsafe to be productive or “hit my numbers”, work off the clock for free. Now I understand the dynamic of having no choice other than quitting to avoid situations like crunch or whatever and most if the time just quitting and finding a new job isn’t feasible. I’m just talking about those afraid of looking bad or lazy or just trying to impress their superiors.
I respect your point-of-view my man. But, look at the big picture in this case. Most companies/businesses are centralized around type A personalities these days. Without going too far in depth, think of it this way. If a company/business can utilize every second of everyday, essentially racing against time, they maximize their profits while providing the lowest quality, but acceptable product and/or service. See, most people will accept mistakes and accept a run-around excuse as to why that particular mistake happened. So, companies/businesses capitalize on this and dish out the small amount of money to pay the low wages to customer service representatives that will communicate effectively with the customer to remedy their particular complaint/situation.
In addition, a developer is salaried. So, if you are uncomfortable being a type A personality, well, you either move on to a job position that is more relaxed, stress free, but a minor pay cut or you change your personality/mentality to essentially fit the needs of the company you want to be a part of (if this is more important to you than being healthy and stress free). In this case, it is too easy for a salaried position to quit at any moment when stress becomes overwhelming or the pay just isn’t aligned with the workload output requested/expected from you, from a company/business.
I can even take it one step further as to why this is what it is. If you were a company/business and you had a few job positions open. And, for these particular job positions, you had interviews with people that said “I can work twice as fast for half the pay,” what would you do?
Not hire them, dude is clearly entirely insane.
You may see it that way but the expectation of the company/business would rather take a chance with a person like that if it means maximizing their profits. Additionally, these types of companies/businesses typically have a revolving door of employment, which, believe it or not, is more cost effective than finding permanent employees that would be making twice as much money as their starting wage after 20+ years. Paperwork is a fraction of a penny to companies/businesses like this. Even if you build your HR department up, wage wise, over 20+ years of employment, this is more cost effective than a group of 100+ employees the business would likely be paying twice their starting wage at 20+ years. Who cares if the person is insane, that is even more reason to hire them because these people likely won’t stick around long or will make mistakes that allow their employment to be terminated, which in turn starts that particular position back at a starting wage for the next potentially insane person that comes along and says/does the same thing.
Disclaimer: I know nothing of Blizzard employment, expectations, etc… So, in that regard, I do not want to sound as if I am saying Blizzard is this way in any shape or form. But, this is true for a lot of highly profitable companies/businesses these days. My guess though, Blizzard is likely NOT a company/business like this as I would think most positions are salaried and built around a set of credentials that are necessary for employment - schooling and degrees. Plus, they deliver a very high quality product that is directly reflected through the reputation they have built for themselves over the course of 30+ years (or more).
I know it probably won’t happen but it’s nice to dream. The vision of this epic game series seems to have been lost in the fog of dollar signs and censorship.
Me personally, I wouldn’t hire them. But then I care about workers health. That person would burn themselves out, be a workmans comp issue, attendance issue due to being sick/not well, and overall costing my company more than a regular hoe despite the possibility for increased production.
Look man I get the more for less and work em til they drop and replace them atitude of corporations/businesses. I left that years ago. I now work 28 hours a week, 4 days a week and make more than I did when I was getting 10-20 hours of overtime a week. I work for a person that values work life balance ad prefers it to be a little imbalanced on the life part.
It probably won’t happen in my life time, but the wheels have been set in motion with this pandemic. People(republicans) believed we were lazy just wanting a free ride and cut subsidies early believing people would rush back to crap paying jobs that over worked people. They didn’t. People are starting to refuse to work for garbage pay and you see in increase for work from home options and wages in those job sectors rising trying to get people to even look. Just yesterday I saw a fast food joint offering a $3K sign on bonus and $17/hr.
Things are slowly getting away from the yes master, I’ll do whatever you ask for this substandard pay.
I absolutely agree, I wouldn’t hire that person either as I understand the affects it would have overall. You make some good points as well. And, I commend you on finding a job that compliments your personality type and nurtures your desired lifestyle as this is increasingly difficult to achieve in our day and age, especially with kids.
I mean, there are definitely many other things that have impacted wages and employment these days. One of the biggest things is how cost of living is determined now as opposed to 30+ years ago. Back then, cost of living was determined by one working adult per household. So, many labor intensive/union jobs 30+ years ago started out between $15-$20 per hour. Nowadays, cost of living is determined by two working adults per household. Because of that changing standard over the past 30 years, wages steadily decreased, until recently - like you said, jobs getting desperate to keep/obtain workers since people are tired of slaving in a job position that doesn’t even pay enough to be able to afford to live on their own let alone being able to comfortably have and take care of a family. Even those same labor intensive/union jobs now start people between $10.50-$15 per hour. And, on top of that, those same jobs expect you to work twice as fast, if not three times as fast, as those workers who started 30+ years ago at a much higher starting wage. Technological advances are responsible for these new, unrealistic expectations that jeopardize employee safety and quality of life. In my opinion, if a company/business has a job position that has been advanced to the point to where they can get twice the workload out of an employee, the wage earned should be double of what it was 30+ years ago.
The saddest part of all of this is wages and salaries paid out each year by a company/business are typically 2.5% to a maximum of 10% of a company’s/business’s profits. To me, that is absolutely disgraceful, selfish, and greedy. Think about the profit margins per year back when people started out at $15 per hour. These companies/businesses made 100s of millions of dollars each year. Now, 30-40 years later, these companies/businesses are profiting multiple billions of dollars a year, if not more, because the production standards have double and/or tripled, but for some reason pay out less of their profits to their employees because wages have steadily decreased, due to the cost of living changes. Even if you doubled the wage to compensate for the doubled workload expectation, these companies/businesses would still profit multiple billions of dollars per year.
In addition to all of this, economic prices for products and services continue to steadily increase because of the cost of living changes. How can you say cost of living is determined by two working adults per household unless those two working adults never have kids? For instance, lets take two working adults who want to have a kid. They decide to have a kid and are now forced to either live off of one working adult’s wages or put their kid in daycare, or solely pay/rely on a friend or family member for childcare so they can return to work. Here is the kicker, childcare these days is insanely expensive. So, again, you are forced to either pay out 75% of your monthly wages at a low paying job or stay home to take care of your own child. Who in their right mind would go back to work to pay the majority of their monthly wages for childcare? It just isn’t logical in any sense. So, as you can see, you are forced to rely on a third person in your household for childcare if you have the benefit to do so which most people these days do not. Otherwise, you offset shifts to work at different times and completely abandon your relationship with your significant other, which has caused divorce rates to sky rocket, higher cases of mental illness, children not being properly cared for and/or abandoned, and many, many more things/issues. So, again, why would we say cost of living should be determined by two working adults in a household? You can even compare social constructs from 30+ years ago to present day. Back then, it was common for two people to meet and commit to each other for the entirety of their lives whereas present day it is almost the exact opposite. Sadly, if you think about it, the increased cases of divorce, mental illness, etc. funnels money into insanely high-waged occupations like lawyers, therapists, doctors, etc…
Anyways, I am done rambling
…just wanted to share my two cents.
