Game won't start

Unable to initialize D3D. This is what I see whenever I try to start the game. What’s going on?

Sounds like its not seeing the GPU.

I would try restarting Windows. Easiest fix there is. But make sure you CHOOSE restart. Not shut down, sleep or hibernate.

If that fails:

  • Log out of the battlenet app. (sign out)
  • Exit the battlenet app.
  • Restart Windows (as described above)
  • Open the battlenet app.
  • Log back into the battlenet app.

If this fails:

  • Check for updated drivers for your GPU.
  • Check for Windows updates.

After that it could get interesting.

To add to that, it’s useful to run dxdiag to get an idea of the system spec.

A copy of the D3Debug file works too.
Another fix is to rename the localprefs file for Diablo III from the Documents\Diablo III\ folder.

Last resort, you can uninstall and reinstall the game. It doesn’t affect you progression or characters.

Well, I ran the ‘scan and repair’ in Blizzard, no go. Then I did everything DTMAce suggested, no go. Next, I installed and reinstalled the game, no go. I renamed the ‘localprefs’ file in the Diablo III folder, no go. I ran dxdiag but I don’t know how to read it to see if anything is kaddywhompus. So, I still can’t get into the game which is weird because I was able to a week or so back.

EDIT
I got it to run, I had to go into the ‘Game Settings’ and reset in-game options. I don’t think I ever changed anything, but oh well, it runs now.
Thanks for the advice and help!

You must have had an update that borked it. Either in Windows, the launcher, or the GPU driver.

I forgot about the in-game launcher settings option. Its so rare that you need to do that, but glad you sorted it.

More likely the game itself than the other two. In almost 30yrs playing games on a PC. I have never had a windows update or a GPU driver change something in a game folder.

When D4 came out people were having all kinds of problem. For the hell of it I install it on 3 different computers. One was new with windows 11, one with windows 10, and one computer that was like 8 to 10 yrs old.

They all ran the game with no problems. The older one video driver was up to date for that GPU, but like 2 yrs old too.

Plus I have had a problem with game launcher for almost a year. If I let the computer go into sleep mode the game will not start. Plus yes if it was just on one computer I would say it has something to do the computer. But it is doing it on 2 computers.

I have it set to close the game completely when I close the launcher. Plus one is running windows 11 the other windows 10.

Yes people should look at everything. But more likely it is the game itself causing the problem. Or the other thing people try to running a game on a computer that doesn’t really support the game.

Well, sleep mode is evil. I personally despise that mode. Its one of the first things I disable on a system. Along with fast start. *shudder

Those two things contribute to systems having issues, due to not allowing Windows to properly restart. Fast start uses a mini-hibernate, which unless you specifically choose restart when shutting down your system, a shut down doesn’t actually shut it down. Sure it powers off, unlike sleep, but it creates a mini-hibernation so the computer can start faster. (hence the name) It was primarily designed for HDDs back in the Windows 8 days. It should be disabled for SSDs.

And sleep? Ugh. Especially on laptops. Your laptop is charged, you close the lid, it goes to sleep. And stays in that mode till you open it again, the battery is nearly dead, or hibernation kicks in, assuming its even enabled. I usually use hibernation directly with a laptop and disable sleep completely. Then my battery isn’t dead when I go to use the laptop a few days later. lol

What really kills me, is 11 is trying to remove hibernation completely. And forcing sleep on everyone to the point where it thinks you aren’t green enough if you have it disabled, despite me either shutting the computer completely off or using hibernation and shutting the computer completely off. Go figure.

Heh. I don’t even have a fast startup option. Not sure why, but if it isn’t there, then obviously I’m not in that mode. The only part of startup I dislike is how the Intel RST driver won’t load until 60 seconds after booting to the desktop. I usually wait for it to load before I do anything that accesses the drives except turning off the Windows Update service via services.msc (I have that pinned to my taskbar for just such reasons). Turning off WU keeps it from doing stupid shenanigans while I’m gaming.

Hi, dude, I got the same problem and I solve whit this tutorial:

Hope helpe you too !

Its hidden for the most part.

You can open settings and type in fast start, but it won’t show up at all.

So.

You need to open the old control panel:

  • Win+R to open the Run box.
  • type in “Control” and run.
  • In this older panel. Go to “System and Security”.
  • Power Options, look for “Change what the power buttons do”.
  • You will now see Fast Start here. To change the setting, you need to click the “Change settings that are currently unavailable.”
  • Then uncheck “Fast Start”. You can also change how the power button and other stuff work here.

Does that pull it up for you on your system? This is referencing a Windows 11 layout. 10 is similar.

FYI, they had already fixed it. You should read the thread before posting to see if the problem was resolved or not.

  1. This video was posted (on YouTube) 8 years ago.
  2. All they did was change an Option in the D3Prefs file for Windowed Mode from False (0) to True (1).

I admit I’m not all that computer tech-savvy. But what they did in the video can be done in the D3 Game Options by changing the Video setting from Fullscreen to Windowed Mode.

In the D3Prefs file the line is:

DisplayModeWindowMode "0"

0 = Fullscreen
1 = Windowed
2 = Windowed (Fullscreen)

I prefer to play, on my PC, in Fullscreen.

I occasionally get a similar issue when trying to run D3. When it happens, I get this message:

But, as soon as I click   OK   the game runs fine.

As far as a fix goes, besides doing what the others have suggested, make sure your OS and video drivers are up-to-date.

Nope. I was already going where you just said to go (I have the old control panel as a desktop item for easy access). Fast Start is not an option that’s there, period.

Edit: I think I found out why. I know for sure that I disabled hibernate because a) I don’t want it eating my SSD space, and b) hibernate is useless on a desktop system. And if hibernation is disabled, fast start isn’t even shown as an option, hence why I can’t see it.

Well, that’s subjective.

Its probably useless for most systems.

In my case, all my main desktops (3 of them) have their own connected battery backup. Connected, meaning monitored by that desktop.

Power fails, they will hibernate after 1 minute or if the battery % reaches a set point.

Where I’m at, we get power outages often enough that it warrants the setup.

I just got a UPS myself. But mine isn’t for my gaming rig. Not a snowball’s chance in hell I’d last more than 1.5 min on battery power if I’m in a game and probably less chance than that to save the game unless it’s a “save anywhere” affair. The UPS will be solely for my router and cable modem as under normal circumstances when power comes back on, I have to wait for the router to fully boot up and then manually reboot the cable modem because the router has a hissyfit if the cable modem finishes booting first. If I’m not available that leaves my grandpa without internet and a backup for making/receiving walls via wifi. And with a 1000W UPS and a power draw of max 40W from the two items under full load (which it wouldn’t be in an outage as network transfers would be idle) I could last at least 30 minutes, maybe longer. I’ll probably get one for the landline phone as well as that’d last even longer and double our fallbacks.

If we’d had the money to go solar we could have had a Tesla battery wall instead, which would last several hours for just those two devices even with two fridges on cycle.

I know this has nothing to do with the OP problems, but this one does help.

How speed up your computer

  1. Right click on the Start Button. Then click on file Explorer.

  2. You can click on that and drag it to the desktop and now you have This PC on the desktop.

  3. Now open This PC and on the list to the left, right click This PC. Then click on Properties.

  4. On the page you be looking for Advanced System Settings.

  5. Click on the Advanced System Settings.

  6. Look for the box with the title Performance. Then click on the settings Tab

  7. On the Visual Effects will want to click on Adjust for Best Performance.

  8. In the list put check mark next to the on “Show Thumb Nails Instead of Icons.

  9. The reason for that only being check. When go to look at your pictures. You be able to see them instead of a blank Icon.

  10. Click on Apply and then OK

Well, I have several.

I run an APC Pro 1500 with the extended battery pack for my gaming rig. While playing a game it can run between 30-60 minutes. And that’s supporting two monitors, the 12900K, and a 4080 Super, among other hardware in the box.

My older Win 7 gaming rig that I use primarily for video work (i7 2nd gen, GTX980 Strix) has a single APC 1500 plugged into that, but no extended battery pack.

My internet here runs on 5 APCs. I have two in my office, an APC 850 Backups, that provides power to my network bridge hardware and the main router, and then another APC 1500 that powers the Starlink and the 2x 12v 30A power supplies that feed all the 12V in the building. Which happens to include some of the internet hardware and the security system. Then there are two battery back ups at the folks, one for the house to support the internet hardware there and one TV, one in their garage to keep the internet out there working and security system, and one at my brothers place to keep his internet going. Note, we all share the one Starlink. I use wireless bridges that carry up to about 1GB speeds.

Not to mention I have several spare units.

Oh, and another 850 that supports my Jellyfin server, and a 550 that carries my workbench needs.

Eventually I plan to go all in and have a custom battery bank built on lithium, with an AC\DC converter\charger that can also tie into solar. They have some nice units out there that could carry my shop for 2-5 grand, plus battery and solar panel costs.

It would be able to run\charge off of solar, run on battery, and even work with the grid tie in. Just a matter of building it. I have to construct an external building to house it and the battery pack for safety.

But time and money. Hard to get both. lol

I use QuickLook if I need to view a picture without opening it. Works on audio files too.
