I’ve always read that Followers have caps to their stats. Because of this, we usually put main-stat Gems in the Followers’ Jewelry and Rubies in their Weapons.
Last night, I was gearing up my Templar when I noticed I had gotten his CHC to 35%. (I always thought his cap was 34%). Since I rarely get any Follower’s CHC higher than 20%, I always put Rubies in their Weapon.
So, I decided to test this further and this is what I discovered: Just like with our Characters, once you reach a certain Level and your CHC is close to 30%, you want to switch from Rubies in your Weapon to Emeralds. I tried this with the Templar and, sure enough, at Level 70 and more than 30% CHC, he gets more benefit from having a Weapon with an Emerald in it.
So now, I’m also considering putting a Diamond in his Helm to see if it does anything for his CDR.
My current thoughts for Followers and Gems (At Level 70 and ~30% CHC):
NOTE:
Once a Follower has their maximum of 150 CHD, the Emerald in their Weapon is no longer effective, unless the Emerald is part of that 150 CHD cap. Otherwise, you would want to switch back to a Ruby. (Thank you, TinneOnnMuin).

Below Level 70 and under ~28% CHC, you still want Rubies in their Weapons.
@Blizzard
Please add Cooldown Reduction to the Followers’ Details Sheet.
Follower CHD is capped at 150 still. They have 50 baseline. 100 CHD on the relic should be the only CHD roll you want on a follower. Adding additional CHD (e.g. Emerald in weapon) won’t do anything. I suppose you could run an Emerald in their weapon and just not take CHD on their relic, but the easiest way to cap their CHD is to just take the roll on their relic and nothing else.
EDIT:
Capped at 150 CHD, no change after socketing Emerald in weapon:
Okay. I’m not as far along as many of you players are.
I see what happened to me: At the time, my Templar only had ~50 CHD. So, swapping the Ruby for an Emerald was what made the difference. I can now see that, once a Follower’s CHD is maxed, the Emerald would not make a difference.
Gearing up the followers is just a cheap attempt by the developers to advance the solo play. They give you just a few more perks big deal, that’s what they been doing prior seasons nothing more nothing less. So is it anything to get excited over I don’t think so.
The details sheet for the followers is a welcome addition, but CDR and ASI are the two main things we are concerned about (how often can they use abilities and how long to wait between them).
I never cared about gems in follower gear before…guess that will change now
The diamond may give the follower a CDR but nothing to my DH.
The ruby in the follower’s helm gave an XP boost to my DH. It was the 4.6% (or whatever ruby gives). I gave my follower a Leorics Crown and my DH got the double XP boost.
It may only be 9.2% xp increase but I think that’s better than your followers CDR, maybe.
That sounds about right. I haven’t been able to confirm that the Follower actually gets the CDR. Hopefully so.
As far as the Ruby goes, your Character and your Follower do not level up separately. So, even if they’re the one that gets the XP, your Character is going to level up too. Or, it’s more like shared XP between your Character and Follower. I’m not really sure how that’s calculated.
It probably depends on who you ask. Do you want your Follower to be able to use their 4 Skills more often? Or do you want that small pinch of XP?
well spank my a** and call me Charlie - I’ve been playing since release and never even thought to look at the bottom of the follower screen to see that was a button…always thought it just referred to the info above it!
