There needs to be a medium instead of this doom and gloom in EVERY single game out there… just bc it isnt fairies and flutters doesnt mean it HAS to be dark gothic dreary gameplay. Look at divinity 2 for example! its dark but fun
Diablo has to be dark. Dark, bloody, and difficult.

You don’t go to Disneyland to have your blood and gore desiring nerves tickled. You go to a haunted house. The Diablo franchise is the haunted house. They tried to mix both of them in order to appeal to everyone and It was a mistake. A commercial success, but the start of a decline in identity.
You wouldn’t ask Disneyland to add a bunch of Scary blood and gut rides because you like it, they would laugh and tell you this is a park for families and children you should go somewhere else.
Also, lets see your breakdown of the games on the very specific theme you suggested; “Doom and gloom in every game.” - I have 350 hours in divinity 2 and its one of my all time favorites already, but it cant be compared to diablo. Divinity is riddled with satire and comedic relief where diablo is not. Once again your asking for doom, gloom and butterflies. THAT’S AN IDENTITY CRISIS AND THEY TRIED IT ALREADY.
The game is called Diablo. Check Diablo 1 and Diablo 2.
Diablo 3’s atmosphere wasn’t dark, gothic and dready and that is what it was crap and it was heavily criticized for.

But it amuse me to see people so excited about “dark gothic” atmosphere… but hey the customer got what they wanted, so it good hey?
That said one can probably make a parallel with how popular Halloween and horror movie are?
