EDIT: This bug has nothing to do with playing zoomed in. Zooming in just makes it more painfully obvious.
I’m sorry for posting this here, but the d2r forum posting is locked for anyone who doesn’t have a flagged account.
There is a horrible camera stutter when you change running direction abruptly.
Here is how to replicate it beyond a shadow of a doubt:
- Make sure running is turned on (it’s off by default when you start a new game)
- Zoom the camera into your character
- Press and hold left mouse button on top of your character to start moving, and then move the mouse quickly left and right through your character to make them change direction abruptly by 180". Notice how the detail in the background jumps forward, as if the camera has to “catch up”.
So it’s like a stutter and then abrupt jump.
Once you notice it, you can’t unsee it. It just feels very jerky. It’s considerably less noticeable when you make circular turns so my suspicion is that this is caused by some kind of character acceleration effect gone wrong. This shouldn’t be in the game, if that is the case. In the original game, your character would move instantly to the direction you told it to move, and camera would follow instantly - no acceleration and no ifs and no buts. That’s what made the game feel so responsive compared to similar games. Diablo 3 was also very good in this regard.
Try the experiment above and then hit F5 to switch back to old graphics and you will see how much smoother the original feels. Night and day difference, really.
P.S. This was tested on two different PCs and it does not have any correlation to how well the game is rendered in frames per second.
P.P.S. Any mention of what happens with my current LoD characters on, let’s say, non ladder? I hear no mention of this. I got some pretty godlike characters and insane stuff that I would like to keep at least as some sort of a keepsake if they are no longer playable?

you have to zoom in on your character to do this? if it doesnt happen without any zooming, its fine. playing the game zoomed in is, at best, a marginal edge case that they wouldnt devote a lot of resources trying to fix.
It happens all the time, but apparently people are too dazzled by fancy FX to notice it without paying very close attention. My friend didn’t notice it until I told him to zoom in and pay attention to the detail in the background, such as the broken caravan. It’s easier to notice the skip when its like 300 pixels across the screen.
After you actually see it you will not be able to unsee it, like I said.
I don’t understand how people are not talking about his - it took me literally 1 second to notice it after starting the game.
Most of the time when you move naturally by dragging the mouse you will not be making too many abrupt turns so the animation is smoother. I tested for this specifically because i was expecting some acceleration/deceleration shenanigans to be present.
What it looks like is that the camera is waiting for the character to complete the turn animation and then start running, while the original game which is running in the background obviously doesn’t do this so the character moves away more quickly, and then the remastered graphics need to skip in order to catch up.
Just remove the god damned turn animations if this is what is going on.
yeah im gonna have to wait and see this for myself.
Im shure you’ll going to have a chanse to report this during the beta tests.
Well, I figured maybe someone should let them know about a debilitating bug sooner than 30 days before the game is due to release…
Then you realy should do it on the appropriate chanels, other wise there’s no guarantee that they will know about it.

Man, I really hate when I am playing an isometric game all the way zoomed in so I can see the complexion of my characters face and then whip my mouse around like a madman and it…looks a bit off. Real deal breaker right there.
All joking aside, based on what I have seen and heard, it is not a problem in the slightest. Their efforts are better focused elsewhere.

No it’s absolutely a problem if the camera is choppy and jerky. Why would I pay 40 dollars to play a choppy version of something that works super smooth now?
No one in the history of these games is going to play the game zoomed in. And on top of it, you said you had to do a quick turn while zoomed in. Zooming in is for looking at character model gear and details, not for playing.

It happens regardless of you zooming in or not. Why are you even responding if you don’t know what I’m talking about?
You said to recreate it you had to zoom in. I get that you mean it always happens but no one notices until they zoom in, at which point I would question if it is really a big deal at that point.
Regardless, I have looked at videos of the gameplay and don’t really see anything happening, though I guess I could sort of see what you mean when the character does a 180 animation, though keep in mind that the original runs at 25 frames per second, so it always looks choppy and that may be masking anything like this. Also, it depends what your framerate is on the hardware you are playing on. The game overall looks buttery smooth and I have heard nothing else from streamers/critics alike.
My issue is more with some of the character running animations. I am trying not to get too bogged down with them, but some of them lack the character of the original, namely the amazon. Luckily I have never been a big fan of her anyway.
Then you realy should do it on the appropriate chanels, other wise there’s no guarantee that they will know about it.
I wish I could, but alas the D2R thread is locked unless you are like a streamer who’s gotten an official invite to the alpha and they will not get unlocked a month before release, which might already be too late.
That’s why I came to this cesspool of a forum to post. Do you think I like posting in a D3 forum? Doing it just reminds me that this franchise is all but dead.
You said to recreate it you had to zoom in.
You are correct. I have now edited the first line of the OP to make things abundantly clear, if you missed the three other places where I said you don’t have to zoom in, before you responded.
My issue is more with some of the character running animations.
I am bothered with those too but they don’t make the camera movement choppy. Unless these issues are actually related as i described above:
What it looks like is that the camera is waiting for the character to complete the turn animation and then start running, while the original game which is running in the background obviously doesn’t do this so the character moves away more quickly, and then the remastered graphics need to skip in order to catch up.
They added these new turn animations which might be what is messing up the sync between the game running in the background and the modern graphics rendering on top.
You know that these forums are not the only one monitored?
Alright, i tested it, and while the issue is there, its not that noticeable. it also happens when not zoomed in, as well.
extremely minor, approching completely irrelevant.

What refresh rate is your monitor and what framerate are you running the game at?
Well, I’m glad smooth motion and controls are irrelevant to you. I wonder what you would find relevant.
The new generation of players are just trained to accept that PC games are basically console ports and therefore controls will be janky and unresponsive.
While standard, to me, this is unacceptable. Improved graphics are irrelevant, if the game doesn’t play as smoothly as before.

look, the camera wasnt smooth even in original diablo 2. the movement was never fliud, it (rather obviously, actually) limits you to, i think 16 directions? so im a bit more forgiving of things like that.
take a look in legacy, run around, changing the direction slowly as you do. you will notice a slight hard shift in direction, instead of it being smooth. same goes for remastered.
now go enjoy an even more ruined experience that you cant unsee, that others were fine with for twenty years.

Nope, legacy graphics are as smooth as ever. Only when you switch to new graphics does the camera become choppy as described.
You are completely wrong - this shifting and skipping is not present in legacy mode. It is only present in the modern mode. You can easily establish this by hitting F5 and comparing. I am perfectly fine after actively playing D2 for over twenty years with how smooth the camera works in that game given that there is no latency.
Also, I don’t understand why you would defend this behaviour as it’s something that could clearly be avoided. Why would the remaster be choppier than the original? How and why do you even start to rationalize that?
ah well, it still doesnt irritate me. its also possibly an issue with the apparently online-only nature of the game, now.
