Equipping followers

Haven’t decided yet if this season was both my first and last one or if I’m gonna give it another shot. In case I do:
How do you folks manage to equip your two followers who do NOT share the primary attribute of the player character with decent gear? The one with the same is clear, since on gets about 95% of hte gear with your own primary. But the other two? I still have them using blue items in some slots.
Thanks.

Make a new, alternate hero of the appropriate class to gamble, craft, cube upgrade if necessary and also reroll primary stats at the Mystic.

do they need to have a certain level to do their work or would a lvl1 do? (I haven’t played for a few weeks, so I don’t really recall things …)

Actually, I can’t remember too… In some cases the alternate may have to be level 70 (maybe gambling??) and other stuff too but not rerolling at the Mystic. Someone else will soon respond I’m sure.

You can craft or re-roll any level item you need as long as its unlocked at the various artisans. Gambling requires the level to be at 70 for 70 level items.

Using a different character to equip your follower also has other benefits. Like, if you’re main is a non-strength-based class and you want to equip the Templar, make a Crusader to equip your follower and you can also use that Crusader to craft Bovine Bardiches for since crusaders only have a few polearms in their loot pool and the Bardiche is one of them.

Or if your class isn’t an intelligence based one, create a Witch Doctor, it isn’t so important today since the Altar, but when a Witch crafts a rare bow, it’s guaranteed to not have the secondary affix of +Discipline making it easier to get a bow with a lower equip level stat.

Just sayin’.

I don’t gamble with my Level 1 alternate. Instead, I might gamble with my main Class and then let my alternate enchant the Main Stat for my Follower. Of course, this is not an issue if you run your alternate to Level 70.

Oops, you already covered that in your next post. (Sorry).

Gambling is the only thing a Level 1 alternate shouldn’t do. Not if you plan to equip your main Follower with Level 70 gear.

Level 1 alternates can do everything else. This includes upgrading Level 70 Rare items crafted by a Level 12 Blacksmith or Jeweler using Kanai’s Cube.

Sometimes, I don#t even bother with adjusting the main stat e.g. if I’m playing a DH and getting follower items to drop with dex, I might just put them on a templar follower ‘as is’, since the resurrection % don’t matter so much for my season journey / speed farming / casual play purposes.

Also… usually, you get a weapon at some point (often from bounties like the mace in Act 1) that has one of the two other main stats. That’s some points right there.

If I’m on DH and using enchantress as follower, I’ll likely care a bit more about her getting INT, since I might want the CD %. So I might create a lvl 1 INT char and reroll main statt on a few other follower drops at the mystic, and use the lvl 1 INT char also to craft e.g. Sage or Cains pieces for the enchantress follower. I rarely bother to level them up and gamble though.

This ladida approach might not do for pushing though…

/edit: I often use the follower whose ‘cannot die’ token I find first

And you can use the 3rd recipe to get a Vigilante Belt for the Templar

Crafting a bow with a WD is not a very good idea since Cluckeye is a WD bow!

What I meant by crafting a bow with a WD is just using the Blacksmith to make a rare bow. Not use the cube. But I didn’t know Cluckeye was a Witch Doctor Bow. Thanks for that information.

Thanks all for the info!

(I now have even more questions but I leave that for another time  )

Lvl 1 is enough.

  • Craft sets (cains/sages/guardian depending)
  • reroll main stat on key legendaries (oculus, nems, flavour, worship, broken crown)
  • reroll (page 2) if you need a good roll of a particular key legendary. Mostly 85% oculus, but could also do flavour if you’re running templar and want str/socket/cdr
  • Craft random (ancient if needed) legendaries in free slots

I wouldn’t recommend gambling or page 3 on alt for follower.

In general, if you don’t run templar (that needs CDR) or pet build (that runs all-skills or skill CDR token), you really don’t need to pay much attention to the follower, and it should be a couple very short visits to your alt. Just main stat on all gear, a couple ancients and gems in chest and pants will bring you to 25k mainstat, which is all you need. Only oculus range is important, and it’s not hard to get like 83% at least, but ideally 85% ofc. It’s a very easy slot to get more damage, so don’t waste the potential by running around with a 72% occy on follower.

Some builds already “require” tagging a Follower with non-main stat at any pushing Greater Rift scenarios. So you have to create an alternative character with another main attribute and use them to reroll or gamble for better items. If you want them both equipped, then you may need to open, equip one, delete the character and create another character with last remaining attribute again.

What about two other Followers? One for farming T16 Visions, bounties and keys, the other one would be for something a little bit harder such as Echoing Nightmares or speed farming about ten tier lower than your highest push.
When you share the main stat with the choice of push Follower, which stat types the other two has hardly matter. In case you don’t share the main stat with your Follower at the push scenarios, then the one you share main stat with usually become your speed farm buddy.

I’m not a skilled gamer, I don’t study game mechanics and the following information is not meant as a Follower Guide. It’s just what  I   do. If you don’t find it helpful, hopefully it may give you some ideas. (I run with a Templar).

Note

  • Followers start with 50% Critical Hit Damage and it’s capped at 150%.
  • Only the Templar benefits from Cooldown Reduction (Healing Skills only). (Not sure about the Follower CDR Skill Amulets).
  • BiS for Ring 2 can be your choice. Popular choices are: Oculus, Hellfire, Unity, etc.
  • If you use the Unity Ring, make sure you have one equipped or cubed and your Follower has the “Cannot die” Amulet.

Property Priorities

I play a Demon Hunter with a Templar Follower. So, I look for Attack Speed, Strength, Critical Hit Chance and Cooldown Reduction (for their Healing Skills).

Choice of Gear

My Templar is easy to gear because nearly all of it can be crafted at the Blacksmith by my Level 1 male Crusader alternate. Three of the items can be looted from Bounty Caches. Only the last few are from drops.

My Templar can have up to 4 Sets equipped with full Set Bonuses active because of the Ring of Royal Grandeur.

You don’t really need to change his equipment for every purpose. If you need to tag along with him while pushing, then you just leave him in Greater Rift equipment and use other Followers for other chores. That’s faster than dragging items on a single Follower each time you need to do some other task.

I don’t know if you are open to criticism but my addendum:

  • Homing Pads and Ice Climbers are a staple for many push type Follower equipment.
  • Sage’s Set is kind of redundant when Altar in Seasons already doubles the DB drops.
  • 2-piece Cain’s Set, is staple when you need them to debuff groups faster in any case.
  • 2-piece Crimson’s Set is staple for Templar when you tag them along for any push.
  • Leoric’s Crown with a Diamond is mandatory for Templar’s Heal. Broken Crown on Follower are meant for bounty farming; Cain’s headdress or Blind Faith are preferred for speed farms.
  • You don’t exactly need RoRG everywhere but it’s useful when equipping them with Guardian’s or Cain’s.
  • Crowd control weapons such as Thunderfury, Azurewrath and Eun Jang Do are staples for Templar or Enchantress.
  • Enchantress can use The Tormentor or Maloth’s Focus to maintain crowd control but Rift Guardians are immune to Fear and Charm effects. However, those two crowd control effects work in Echoing Nightmares as an exception against non-boss enemies.
  • Most popular two-handed Enchantress weapon must be The Sultan of Blinding Sands, but Blackguard is not a bad choice with reduced control impairment duration.
  • Scoundrel can use Cluckeye, Windforce or Hellrack in case you lack crowd control or using him for farming T16 or speed farming low tiers.
  • Enchantress and Templar can use summons by equipping Genzaniku or Maximus. They’ll keep fighting even if Followers fell in combat temporarily.
  • Followers have 0% Critical hit Chance at base value, that makes Broken Promises a good pick for activating critical hit triggers such as Solanium or Scoundrel’s Hysteria with Pus Spitter.
  • Any Follower can equip Nagelring for extra summons and distract multiple enemies for a short while.
  • Followers share gold find%, magic find% and experience bonuses on their equipment with 1/5 efficiency. While insignificant, equipping them with Leoric’s Signet, HellFire ring, Goldskin, Nagelring or Ruby on their helmet socket will increase those stats.
  • For additional survival you can equip Enchantress with Blood Brother and Templar with The Burning Axe of Sankis, then equip them Justice Lantern.
  • Builds that use Enforcer gem can make their Followers equip halved cooldown or all-skill access trinkets, as secondary power of Enforcer actually benefit Followers too.
  • Legendary gems Mutilation Guard and Esoteric Alteration work on Followers and adds another layer of defense.
  • String of Ears work on Followers to help them withstand some of the more heavy attacks and Witching Hour would help them debuff more efficiently.
  • Cord of Sherma can help Night’s Veil of Scoundrel to a degree. It can be problematic due crowd control resistance on a push scene otherwise.
  • Most popular pick for Templar shield is Freeze of Deflection. Closely followed by Wall of Man and Coven’s Criterion.
  • Either of the five elemental immunity amulets work on Followers, but that means no more Flavor of Time. Idea is equipping FoT yourself and keeping immunity on them for speed farms.
  • Oddly enough St. Archew’s Gage actually work on Followers, but no visual cues will be given. Nevertheless, you don’t use it because Gloves of Worship is too good to skip.

Those specific 50% cooldown reduction trinkets works on each Follower for every skill with the exception of cheat-death cooldown of two minutes. Beside that, only Templar able to benefit from Cooldown Reduction% from items equipped and it only affects his Heal, and nothing else.

I think you should us e a broken crown at least for bounty/vaults/cow.

So let get this straight and could be wrong too. But if you use this set and you are getting up to maybe what 8 DB per drop? So you activate the double DB in the altar now you are getting up to what maybe 16?

Plus the double DB in the altar doesn’t help the NS people. But the basic reason they really rework the follower for was stuff you could get in the game. That people would complain about not getting enough Keystones & DB.

I use the Scoundrel because I mostly run a DH.
Glove of worship - Shrines for 10 mins
Cain’s set - Keystones up to 7 in a solo Rift game
Nemesis - Shrines & Pylon’s
Flavor of time - Pylon’s last twice as long
Goldskin - More gold
Byriza-Do Kyanon - You can Projectiles Pierce’s 2
Shoulder - Homing Pads Town Portals no longer Interrupter

Yes you can really setup your follower any way you want.

Plus the only time they really help you is if you a person that does a lot of solo runs.

If you are person that likes to play in public games. Or in a group they really useless even to make one.

Question is, do you really need more DB after playing Seasons? You should have around over 100k DB at non-Season if you were to attend multiple Seasons at some point. A heap that you would never dare to spend, nor have time for. Do you honestly play non-Season without any break, either taking a dive in Seasonal? Then go ahead and equip Sage’s with RoRG because you won’t get Visions at non-Season to farm keys and mats faster.

Plus I just went back played and you are really right on the Saga set. You really don’t need it in seasons. Because I remember when they 1st gave US the altar yes you could get up to maybe 16 DB on a drop. But once they gave US vision it looks like they change it to just 8 no matter if you using the set with the altar.

I only started doing this last Season 32 and this Season 33. I used to only have 2 Templar setups: Rifts/GRifts and everything else.

I don’t care for the other Followers. And, even though the chart I posted looks like a lot, I really only have to change a couple of items when switching tasks.

I don’t play games like most players. I don’t necessarily take my time, but I don’t speed rush through everything either.

By all means. I’m sure anyone, including @Orcinus, reading this thread could benefit from your insight.

Good to know. Thanks.

Yes, I believe I stated that in my previous post…   twice.

I actually do that when I need the Gems. I just didn’t want to over-complicate my chart. (hehe) In fact, I start this as soon as Marquis Gems begin dropping for me. Once I have a good supply of Gems I switch to Leoric’s Crown.

Regarding Death’s Breaths

It’s true. At some point Sage’s is not necessary. But, early on, when I’m doing most of my enchanting, upgrading and reforging, all those Death’s Breaths come in handy.

And as I stated in my previous post, it was not meant to be a Follower Guide. I also didn’t include every detail because I didn’t want it to become a Follower Guide. I merely included the “basics” of how I gear my Follower. I may not even switch to Cain’s during Rifts if I already have a few hundred Greater Rift Keystones.

In Summary

I hope somebody found the information useful. Or, at the very least, it inspired some ideas.

And I would like to thank everyone else for sharing their information.

Safe journeys!
