I’ve been running for the Rainbow Portrait for a couple hours, again. It just occurred to me that (because my alter is complete) my pet will salvage most things not Legendary. Does that mean it’ll salvage the Rainbow Portrait?
Rare whites transmogs don’t get auto salvaged. And that’s normally a problem with the portrait frame… it’s a white drop so easy to miss in the sea of other drops, especially if you’re playing on a lower level to speed thru the rainbow. The pet actually helps by clearing the rest.
You can try it yourself… go to Leoric’s Manor and find Lachdanan’s shield in the hidden room. When you click on the display rack the shield will just plop down on the ground and your pet ignores it.
Rare drops can be incredibly frustrating. I’ve lost track of the number of rainbow goblins I’ve farmed trying to get the wings. I finally spent a weekend grinding the other rainbow for the portrait… well over 100 runs but it finally dropped. Good luck and may RNGeesus bless you.

Location that opened by staff (frame can be looted only there) haven’t too much loot. AFAIK frame cannot be salvaged also.

Sir William (and the Rainbow Portrait Frame) can ONLY be found in WhimsySHIRE. Not WhimsyDALE.
You need a Staff of Herding to open the entrance to Whimsyshire. (Just to be clear).
Been playing since before seasons and sets. Still hasn’t dropped, so good to know that pet won’t auto salvage if I ever do find it!

I think I did almost 200 runs of whimsyshire before I got it. Ported in my alt and two clan members to make the most of my effort.
That’s actually quite lucky.
Over the years, I’ve probably done a couple of thousand runs and not got it.
I still don’t have the portrait.
But I did get the wings. The easier way. (from those gifts)
I’d say it was more spot on… chance for Sir William to spawn is 0.5-1% apparently so I got the tail end of that drop chance.
You on the other hand… real unlucky. I pray your next visit to whimsyshire will spawn Sir William.
My hunt for the cosmic wings sounds like your experience with the rainbow portrait.
I should probably go back to rainbow gob hunting instead of doing fissures - lol
