Diablo4. can we move with map open?

In Diablo3 the developers decided to break tradition and not allow us to move with the map open. Even worse there was a “bug” where if you kept left click held down and opened the map with tab then you could keep moving with the map up… They “fixed” this issue so now your character stops at the last point your cursor was at when you opened the map.

I imagine its just a lie or a cheap excuse that the reason they did this was in order to make the game feel more immersive. You wouldnt be walking around in real life with a map covering your face so why do it in game? I think its just because instead of using arrow keys to move around the map they made it so you can click and drag the map around which I hate to admit is faster and more convenient but at what cost? Every diablo clone has allow a transparent map to be open in the center of the screen over your character. I dont know if diablo invented this mechanic but it was in diablo1 & 2 and every clone ever made.

I believe diablo4 is going for the same diablo3 style map where you cant do an overlay? honestly its kind of a huge deal breaker for me. It feels cross trying to run around the map and just spamming tab non stop to toggle the map open and closed. I cant imagine im the only person who does that…

Also this genre needs some real end game. I havent felt connected to my characters since diablo1. do people really give a crap about a leader board of who lvls the fastest? or who cleared the highest level rift? This is 80s arcade style end game, trying to get your initials up to #1 for bragging rights.

I dont see why seasons cant just be high ilvl gear to obtain instead of delete your character start all over, regrind the lvls, the same items, the same build, the paragon… Yea some people use seasons as a chance to play other classes or experiment with other builds but in a game with free respecs… who cares? Path of exile has a really high respec cost so if your build is awful you might as well just wait till next season and try again At least in PoE they are adding new game systems ever season so it feels a little different but its the same tedious lvling from 1 to max level all for the sake of a leader board… this isnt fun end game for the majority. What maybe a few hundred IF EVEN… care about their leader board position. Instead we have diablo3 seasons boosting dmg % by thousands… why even bother. you could have had each season just created % increased items and you need to farm out the new better versions of gear and reset the greater rift leader boards instead its just nope… redo every tedious task because thats lazy game design. between shadowlands never even getting the fixes it really needed, dragon flight being lack luster, diablo immortal being the most disgusting cash grab in the history of mobile games… How is anyone supposed to have faith in any future product?

A bit. But it’s not an overlay, you’ll have your mini map, but opening the whole stuff will cover the playing area. But if you hitting open and close fast enough you can manage it.

About endgame and stuff. You’re not required to take part in sesons, and just chill in the ethernal realm, getting attached to your character as much as you like. If it’s legal where you live, you can probably even marry them.

For the most part, I would say something is wrong with the game design, if people need to have a map overlay all the time.
Minimap should be enough.
Heck, maybe dont have any map at all in dungeons?

Agreed.
Tbh, just dont have any kinds of leaderboards at all. That would be the best decision.

Luckily D4 does not have free respecs. Not yet at least.

It is unusual to have larger open world areas while simultaneously removing the larger transparent map overlays that are a staple of ARPGs like Diablo… it will be interesting to see how this plays out in practice.

Often I do find the minimap is not sufficient when playing games in this genre, and almost always play with the overlay on… but I will admit that it does distract from the environment and graphical elements in the areas. So perhaps that is why they made the decision? If they have things like auto-pathing between key landmarks/towns or waypoints, it might also mitigate the risks associated with removing the minimap.

So how exactly do you move the map around in D1 to see where you want to go
and the same with D2 how do you open the map up so you can see more than the immediate surroundings

I miss the D2 overlap of the area map. Yeah, granted I can see more with a minimap, but I can see more if I don’t have an overlay also. Some areas in D2 work better with it and others don’t. I use it accordingly. Would be nice if D4 had that option too. Or both really. Then the player can choose which on better suites a particular area. Best of D2 and D3.

16 day necro post ftw. I’m bored.
