Diablo series… ANIME?!

As we’ve recently heard, Overwatch and Diablo will get their own series on Netflix. Of course Actizzard will take a look on both projects. The problem is that it is gonna be… ANIME. I think it fits Overwatch but seriously, Diablo Anime?

Please, explain me how braindead the Activision management is. They cut content in all their games, they release sh*, they are making bad decisions all the time, only to save money but earn the same (lol, good luck). ALL KNOW that full length cinematic movie will give you billiard gains = your dream will come true, you greedy fu* But still, you won’t make it cinematic. First, you made Warcraft Movie with actors, now you’re doing anime. Seriously, there are no sane people working there. I’m really starting to believe that Activision consists of confectioners or bricklayers that have no idea about their work. I’m sure there are some good psychiatrists around. Please, call one.

I’m inclined to call you the braindead one here.

First, game-to-movie adaptations have a notoriously hideous record at the box office, with the Warcraft movie among them and only being salvaged by foreign markets. Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, Wing Commander, Hitman, Max Payne, and more are pretty much never going to come up on anyone’s “best movies” list and enjoy cult success at best, while something like Pokemon or even Sonic just naturally enjoy a far larger audience no matter how self-important some Diablo fans are.

Secondly, if you believe a 90m film can offer more than a likely 12 episode, 24 minutes per, season when it comes to lore, fleshing out characters, and simple spectacle, then I can only feel sorry for you.

Third, for the general anime haters that would love to imply things can’t be dark enough in this medium, I would encourage them to go watch things like the original Berserk series from the late 90s or even something like Claymore as examples of dark medieval fantasy with demons, violence, and the ever important nudity. Netflix’s Castlevania is also a decent example of what could be, even though I do have my own critiques that weigh it down here and there.

Basically, chill out and open yourself up to some new experiences. Getting this bent out of shape over something you’ve not even seen a trailer of, let alone a screenshot, is very telling of your ignorance of the medium.

Maybe you get me wrong or I wrote it not clear enough so…
I did not mean exactly cinematic movie, it could also be series but in cinematic way. Look how many cinematics there already are in Actizzard games. Summarize them and it’s already a movie length so there would be no problems to make series that way. Even Warcraft Movie was not bad at all, it is too big world to show it within 2 hours so any Blizzard series is a good idea because they have more time on screen. Even effects were not bad at all, we all clearly saw it was not Blizzard job. Sometimes it was a very poor quality. Actizzard has a really talented graphics and modellers so I have no idea why not get use of it. All the more they see how players around the world are satisfied with it.
Please don’t compare it to 90’ series because 20-30 years ago, movies and series were made with passion.
And as I said anime fits titles like Overwatch but you won’t tell me that you would not be pleased to see Warcraft/Starcraft/Diablo movie/series on big screen in cinematic way. Will you?

To be frank, I don’t want condensed movie garbage. It took multiple movies, each beyond average length, to tell the LotR story and some would still argue too much got cut, revised, or downplayed compared to the source material. In comparison, I don’t feel the Diablo universe has the chops to pull off similar without introducing new content that purists will be infuriated over in their own way. Otherwise, the episodic approach is far more beneficial since you can figure certain arcs are going to have more or less required screen time to convey their point. Something like a 12 episode order will also equal multiple movies in length, so the end result is still pretty much the same.

Now, do I need the actual movie theater experience? No, no I don’t. R-rated films very rarely get the fanfare I suspect you’re hoping for, either, with something like Deadpool being more the exception than the norm and that arguably rode the wave of Marvel’s other hero movie successes. For everyone not living in LA, NY, or some other major city, you can probably figure there wouldn’t be a “Diablo Party” or similar sort of grand premiere with people cosplaying and all that jazz. In the end, watching things from the comfort of my own home tends to win out, including simple things like the ability to pause if I have to go to the restroom or enjoy food that isn’t grossly overpriced.

Whether or not you feel Overwatch is a better fit doesn’t matter. 90’s anime isn’t magically better than current entries, either. It can still work, you just need competent writers, animators, vocal talent, musicians, and the proper budget to pull it off. Should Blizz skimp on any of those things, nobody wins.

Yoy are hater obviously go hate some where else. This diablo forum not anime forum. Diablo coming to anime has nothing to do with your hate. Also you cannot judge anything because you have nothing to judge it s just a rumor. See the screen shots and then talk and comment on them.

To answer your question;

I most definetely donot want that because it will take tooooooo long to finish a diablo movie. I donot want to wait for it for atleast 5 years to publish 3 movies which still wouldnot catch up with ROS. However, by then i would be playing D4. I would have to wait for more. It would take about a decade to catch up nobody in their right minds would want that. Especially considering average player age in Diablo might not even be alive till then.

Also anime can ahow almost %100 of the book while movie cannot just like saidosha said.

Visually there are many Anime styles out there; some of them could work for Diablo.

Also keep in mind that it won’t be a Japanese anime because it’s being produced in NA; Japanese anime has a lot of cultural humor and themes that just don’t resonate the same here so some people are either turned off by it or just don’t find it amusing/engaging.

Could be cool depending on how its done. If it takes some pages from The Witcher/Mandalorian I could be into it. The world of Diablo is a cool setting to work with.

Only thing I’ll disagree on is the presumption it would all be done here in the states. It’s highly likely there is or has already been some outsourcing to foreign studios to do some in-between work or even specific sorts of scenes. And while that isn’t to say it couldn’t all be done here, we don’t have nearly the same number of skilled animators, nor would cost efficiency be there. The anime industry is somewhat notorious for crunch, which is good for the consumer getting things in a more timely manner, but can be morally questionable for the worker. I’d like to believe Blizz wouldn’t pull that, but the games industry is also guilty of similar at times.

That said, cultural nuances are definitely a thing, but Diablo being absent our Earth pretty much avoids a good chunk of those disconnects by default. Such is also why subtitle purists tend to crap on dubs because occasionally revisions are unavoidable to make things or relatable or to simply match lip flaps on the speaking character, which is something the JP ironically don’t focus on much.

Either way, I’m simultaneously amused, yet saddened, we’ve got people losing their minds over the anime choice, but I’d also say this the net result of US culture treating the animation industry like crap and socially dismissing anything not live-action as “for kids” by default. Toy marketability, or the lack thereof, has also played its role in killing projects in the eyes of the major networks. Oh well. I remain cautiously optimistic, but also aware we could get Berserk reboot-tier garbage.

ill repeat

The negative response is predictable, but alas, thinking that I’ve moved past when I actually bothered to look and saw certain anime styles with extreme potential to teach Diablo a few things in persistence and tone construction as compared to crammed together movies and almost certainly cgi-driven monsters that won’t necessarily convey the original tones.

If the Diablo series had the same atmosphere as Goblin Slayer, then I think it would be a success… well I like anime so I’d probably enjoy it, but it could be really good if they used goblin slayer as inspiration.

Please be aware I do not recommend watching Goblin Slayer if you have a weak disposition. It’s a dark fantasy / horror anime and has it’s own warning about containing content that some viewers may find upsetting.

To those who have seen goblin slayer, replace goblins with fallen and I think we have a win.

They already made an anime/cartoon style short for diablo called Diablo III: Wrath and it was great. This has been done before and does have potential. Although i would prefer real actors tbh.

Thats the problem.
That animation does not look bad, it just does not fit into Diablo.

Whenever i hear diablo i think of similar horror stuff like Alien or Predator, not some “animated action”.

If they go Castlevania style,I’m fine with it.

But the most important part is the story and the narrative… hopefully they will have some good dialogs and stuff.

So you’ve never actually seen an anime or you just compare every anime to Pokemon and Dragon Ball ? Do your research first. Anime is a great way to show deep and dark stories. One of the best ways imo.

Also… you start to offend others just because you don’t understand something or have a different opinion ? Very mature…

When I think of what truly fits into Diablo, I am reminded of the original game, and what sells that horror experience over anything seen since. Consider the elements that make up the original as a horror ARPG.

Visuals are key, I would say, and the nuances to this is a little beyond the animation style. In the first place, they weren’t necessarily realistic. There was a dated gritty element to them that left them somewhat abstract. Now, anime style doesn’t exactly catch this, but neither does stuff like Alien or Predator - rather, stop-motion, classic horror taken to another level of design would more appropriately represent the old school aesthetics. This of course would vary in argument from person to person. That said, I would consider the similar stuff you compare to not quite resembling the tones of original material.

A lot of Diablo doesn’t boil down so much to surviving against mysterious singular entities as an active focus, but taking down fodder that, while sometimes extremely threatening, pales somewhat in the challenge as compared to the effects on the characters themselves and the buildups to the true, powerful threats in the context. There’s also serious precedence for the damaging effects such encounters have on the psyche of characters. Basing off the original game alone, there is actually quite a bit of opportunity supporting a story built on interlinked, even if somewhat independent events.

This stuff, I would argue, is more readily achieved in an episodic style without having to worry about big budget animations and CGI that may or may not take the path modern horror does in looking ‘too CGI’, as compared to a one-shot blast of live action done at modern Blizzard graphics levels or even a series built on that alone. Budget’s pretty core to consider, and when thinking of what ‘fits’ into Diablo, high fidelity graphics aren’t the only thing to define it either. It’s never really been a series defined by its cinematic quality (even if the expectations would be higher than anime designs, admittedly) and more by how it employs elements with its less flashy examples. Just an alternative take as to what ‘fits into Diablo’.

Yeah, you are absolutely correct. Diablo in anime style would just be terrible. Just look a this awful short made in anime style: Diablo III: Wrath - YouTube

Just terrible, amirite?

/sarcasm, in case it wasn’t obvious.

Castlevania would like a word with you.

Going back to topic, I am not against the idea but ONLY IF BLIZZARD IS NOT IN CHARGE OF THE SCRIPT. I’ve had enough of their cheap cheesy dialogues of D3, WoW, and SC2. They ruined heir own games with those cheap dialogues.

having it as an anime seems like an odd step, but personally I’ve enjoyed anime like the original Berserk series, Berserk Golden Arc movies, Hellsing Ultimate, and a couple other dark anime.

If the effort is put into it, it could turn out very good. The main concerns at this point would be, what kind of effort is going to be put into this kind of production and how accurate will it be with the Diablo lore?

Blizza track record goes directly against everything you named that makes classic animes good.

So good luck with the the anime produced for markets outside of the US. Immortal, Diablo Anime. Yeah…
