Diablo Movie by Guillermo Del Toro, Blizzard make it so

Personally I think he would do a great job at bringing Diablo to the big screen. I know the Warcraft movie didn’t do very well and critics hacked it to bits, but this is Diablo not Warcraft.

I can’t think of anyone more suited to helm this project than Guillermo Del Toro. I think of what he did with the first Hellboy (didn’t care too much for part 2) and Pan’s Labyrinth (only 1 of 2 movies that I will see again in its original language, Brotherhood of the Wolf being the 2nd) and honestly think he could do the same with the Diablo franchise.

Yeah, sure there are other directors out there, but I can’t really think of anyone that would be perfect for it. Yeah, I know more people are focused on Diablo being animaeted… but I can’t see them not wanting an actual movie.

I’m not interested in a Diablo movie. Not now. Writing quality has gone down the crapper almost across the board. Nowadays all the “know” how to do is to make it loud, flashy, and brain dead. They seem to know nothing of character development nor plot development.

The heroes and villains would be bland and cardboard cutouts, the lore ignored or, worse, “rewritten”, and the style would make Whimsydale look dark and brooding. And when the Diablo fans didn’t like it they’d be called all sorts of unflattering names.

A decade or so ago, perhaps. Though to me Diablo as a movie should be a horror movie. Not a gore movie being called a horror movie by people who think “jump scares” constitute scariness. The people who were able to write good, genuine horror movies and not rely on cheap effects are so rare as to be virtually nonexistent.

When the horror movie returns to its roots, and true horror writers return to their place in the genre, then I’d be interested in a Diablo movie.

Games and books going to movies or a TV series in general don’t do very well. So… it has less to do with it being “Warcraft” and more to do with it being “a game.”

TheRealBill:

Have you seen Hellboy (not the remake or part two) or Pan’s Labyrinth? I honestly think that GDT would do the ‘dark’ source material justice.

Orrion:

I used Warcraft as an example because it is Blizzard. I do agree most ‘games’ do not do very well on the big screen. That’s because you have hacks like Uwe Boll or people who are not familiar with the source material directing/making the movie.

You mean Hellboy from 2004? Of course. Wasn’t Pan’s also around that time-frame, 2006 or so?

As I said above, a decade or so ago maybe.

Nah, give it to Taika Waititi. He’d make it hilarious.

I think he could still pull it off. But yeah, back then would have been best.

As a movie with an original plot, perhaps. Plenty of characters and scenarios that could be viable for this. And just because things have been bad so far doesn’t exclude the possibility of a good new thing.

But that also means you shouldn’t give it undue faith until it happens. Would I like an actual movie? Sure. I’d just really need to be sold on the pitch. And alas, everyone has their ideas for what they’re looking for in that. I think Guillermo being successful has a good bit to do with luck as well as nuances to Diablo itself I don’t think he has serious precedence in (at least over other potential directors).

As far as them reliably being bad to date, I think this is more a matter of people not knowing how to do them well and trying to execute unfeasible concepts with it, not a matter of the idea itself being weak or automatically due to fail. Some things fit better for different medias. Cramming the concepts of a wider video game into a single movie is generally a bad idea. Taking a part of it or looking at the world itself without being so dang concerned about ‘see this, this is from the game, enjoy it pls’ and caring more about making a good movie might be a pretty integral difference.

No. History has proven again and again that 99% of movies based on videogames are utter trash.

I mean, if you really want to say the creators of the Super Mario Bros. movie or Doom or Tomb Raider weren’t familiar with the source material you can try to do that… but honestly, I don’t believe that. it’s simply that a lot of “game” concepts don’t translate well to the big screen, or at all.

Let’s talk about Diablo, for example. Why do we play Diablo? We play Diablo to build our characters, mow down the Hordes of Hell for experience and greater abilities, and acquire shiny things.

Does any of that translate to a movie? No. In a movie we’re not gonna hear Aiden shout “DING” and have a yellow glow for a couple seconds, then have him pause to spend his 5 skill points and change into a new (yellow-colored for rarity) set of armor (with DEMONSPIKE COAT written across the chest in red letters) he found earlier because he meets the strength requirement now. We’re also not going to see a theoretical Sorcerer character stumble into a hidden library and start knocking books off at random until he says “Cool! A Fireball book.”

Or, in other words, any movie will have to rely on what makes movies successful instead of what makes the games fun. And, seriously, there aren’t enough “go kill the evil demon” type of movies?

Blizzard should stick to their cinematics for making movies! Their cinematics have always been awesome, and I would totally watch Blizzard movies if it was just their cinematics only!

…which would probably be cost prohibitive to make either as a full blown movie or as an episodic thing. I’d say they’re better off trying something new, seeing if it catches, and continuing with far less chance of dropping off citing a budget crisis.

Nah, it should be 90 minutes of rat-runs…

Seriously though - I was thinking the same thing about the cinematics…even if they did something that was all lore based and ended with Diablo’s rise to power…setting up sequels if successful box office…or even if it eventually followed a group of Nephalim through the story to kill Diablo…

Orrion:

HAHA! I remember Mario Brothers. WOW, that movie was bad back then. Doom on the other hand was decent, so was the first Tomb Raider with Angelina. Also, I liked the first Resident Evil with Milla. Diablo could be done, IF Blizzard gets the right director. I really believe that GDT could do it. Would he? I have no idea, but it would be cool if he did.

PMG:

That would be sweet. Their Diablo cinematics are good. I would rather watch a movie or series like that vs. some cartoon.

I believe having the original diablo story plot would work for a one off movie, however the d2 storyline would probably be best suited for a trilogy… reakon a d1 movie with a d2 follow-up tv series would be best fit.

That would be awesome. No animated series either.

No animated series for this plz.
Also Resident Evil 1 wasnt that bad comparing to the game.
Also Silent Hill 1 wasnt bad either. It was actually really good. (better then the game imo).

The problem is that todays current Hollywood would make the main character a Mary Sue Crusader, wielding Captain Americas shield, and Thors Hammer. Oh wait, Crusader is a hateful racist term, so that might not work…

Love it when a 1-5 post necros an old thread.

Anyway, Yoda is on to something. Anyone see Pan’s Labyrinth or Hellboy? Man, he is a genius. Talk about good movies. Imagine him making a Diablo movie. GOLD!!! Not because Diablo is spanish for devil either.

Also, NO DIABLO CARTOON!!! NO! NO! NO!

Back to the necroposter. I liked the Resident Evil franchise. Obviously the first movie was the best one, they rest were just good to good enough. Silent Hill was freaky as… well you know. I never played either game, but the movies were fun to watch.
