Diablo IV - Should take Inspiration from The Last Epochs Skill System

I think D4 should take inspiration from the last Epoch skill system where every skill have its own skill tree, so you could morph your fireball into different types of attack. it also brings more customization and you also have to make choices of which path in the skill tree you want to take.

Let’s say that your are going for a single target build and you want your bilzzard to do single target, you could make it so by taking a node in the skill tree where you change the outcome of blizzard, so the area of blizzard becomes more narrow and it instead are doing more dmg.

I think this is one of the best skill systems i have ever seen and I think D4 could take inspiration from it and improve upon it.

It is a pretty cool system, I just wish the game performed better. Maybe further into development it will improve…

It is by far one of the many systems blizzard could look at implementing something similar for Diablo 4… I really want this game to have a tonne of depth, customisation, and character identity.

Hell Yes (20 chars at least)

Or they could mix the Last Epoch and Wolcen skill systems to get a completely different way of doing skills and traits.

yep that’s the same thing that they have been hearing about since D3 launched in 2012; heap a bunch of trees and interwoven growth systems all over the place because D3 is a flavourless joke in this VERY important and otherwise very interesting regard…

Whilest at first this sounds cool on paper I’d say on the long/er run is overcomplicating things

Right now there’s a A/D/A power system that can also be used for this type of effect/s, for example:

Firebolt:

+demonic-power/100 % chance to do a multicast and lower resist
+angelic-power/100 % chance to return mana and increase damage of next cast
+ancestral-power/100% chance to leave a DoT trail on the ground and pierce

Things like that, therefore based upon whether you’d go for a Ancestral/Demonic/Angelic power route your skill would/could behave differently… OR, for those that don’t want to be “predetermined” have each of the levels not only give us ADA powers to spec into but also increase a particular A/D/A stat per skill (or per skill tree at least)

Having each skill have it’s own tree is a bit over the top of things if/when combined with everything else there already exists… Yes, things are “hypeable” now but once you sit down and you have like 4 pages of “hard read”

  • skill progression per level
  • A/D/A affixes per items
  • Talent tree
  • AND now you want also each skill have it’s own tree lol

Just so you spec a single damn skill point probably won’t be as much fun as people imagine it to be I think… ALSO, chances are there be redundances regarding the skills once things are done that way (for example fireball from melee range with enlarged AoE applying DoT with firewall & similar things)

I’m pretty excited about Last Epoch in general but especially the skill system. However I’d say that it is taking inspiration from and improving upon D3 rune system (and/or PoE gem link system). I don’t really want D4 to copy that - its not a make or break deal for me but I really prefer a Grim Dawn / Torchlight 2 / Diablo 2 (without prerequisites and more passives) style skill tree that lets you invest different amounts into particular skills and lets you choose how many skills you want to actively use.

But it is critically important to have customizable skills. Legendary items isn’t the best way to accomplish that… it needs to be character side customization. I don’t know the best way to accomplish that… maybe just a secondary skill tree. Keep the regular skill tree where you invest in skills with points gained from character level and then beside that you gain experience with skills from using them that let you customize them or you find randomly spawned shrines that give you a point to spend.

Think I’m onto something lol, here’s an example:

Your character: Demonic: 50, Ancestral:25, Angelic: 25

Each of those points you could either use to empower item affixes, OR use them in skills for extra effects, for example you might not need 50 demonic with your current gear and can spend 10 demonic points into your most used skill/s for extra debuff power or simply more damage

Heck you might wanna remove angelic altoegether for a while and spend those 25 points into CD reduction or lower cast cost of a certain skill… Think it’s a nice way to introduce “strategy” where you’d either need sacrifice gear affixes for extra skill power or vice versa, use gear as much as you’ve specced into without having “extra left” for empowering of skills

Sounds interesting  ?

Just to clarify: Each level you empower one of the three powers that you can either “assign” to gear usage or empower certain skill/s… Say you gain 3 powers to assign per level, might go 3/0/0 or 2/1/0 for certain hybrid builds

HOWEVER, maybe you don’t need the “excess” (at the moment of leveling up you have enough of your most-specced power already), and instead decide to assign that power to skill (Demonic would increase damage or multicast rate or lower resist or CC mobs, Angelic would increase return mana, reduce mana costs, reduce CD, or even at some spells give you back some shields per hit, ancestral might be doing various things, explode corpses, pierce, multicast, disorient, berserk, summon something, gain X% return life for X seconds… maybe)

However NOT have your powers re-specced completely (meaning if your character is 50/25/25 then you can’t all out of sudden make it that a good defensive skill can have 30 Ancestral points (previously you’ve specced max up to 25 for that route of things)

Meaning ? = you could micro a “soft reset” every now and then combined with gear-power reduction in order to use for empowering certain skills, could be nice thing since you could reset talent trees often as well, BUT you can’t “hard-reset” your actual/total points per route you’ve chosen already… For THAT (and skill level powers) you’d need a hard-reset that would either be super hard to obtain or have like 2 in total when completing the whole campaign (maybe  )

Yeah man! I agree with you. I think Skill talent tree could bring so many possiblities and it’s worth to discuss about it. I already did a post on that with a lot of content and ideas. Read it and give me your feedback ! Thx

True That, It brings more customization of the skill, and that is great.
