Diablo IV Quarterly Update - Q1 February 2020

So far all looks promising, but!!!

Have I misunderstood something or is this talk of monster families out of place and time?
If the devs mean that some monsters will be of a certain type with different abilities then sorry but that has been in the Diablo series from day one.
To lighten things up a little… Unless they mean that they are related to each other…
As I mentioned earlier the screenshots looks unbelievably good. I hope all this talk about cartoonist will go away.

That would be bad imo. Game design by committee.
Game devs should listen to feedback. But never be bound by anything other than their own vision.

Guys, yes all of you that want more of D2 in D4, the inventory has the same number of items as in D2 and now you complain.

Not easy to understand what you want.

The inventory should be much bigger imo

Now I know the following is a topic that brings the worst out of this community. (Sadly, not exaggerated) But especially after this post I have to ask.

So we will have the option to switch between Controller and M+K at will, because the UI, most functions and combat will be designed around that. And yet, with both Controller and M+K support for the PC version, we still won’t be able to use WASD? U know, the thing which combines the fluid, satisfying movement that a controller brings with the action/fast pacing/accuracy of M+K? Baffling. I know that on any post bringing up WASD it’s getting flamed to death, but Blizz is just spitting in our faces with that.

Not to mention the resolution is wrong. It should be 640x480 without any hopes of anything better until the expansion!

oh yeah /s heheheh

Great Discussion from Mrllama about the inventory design.

Honestly, it really seems like all they really want is to complain.

Alpha will be closed, and most likely Beta as well.

Blizzard was never really that. They were the kings of taking genres thenliked and making them appeal to the masses.

Where did the old blizzard go where the customization and the itemization were really good, It was deep and rewarding. D2 is a perfect example of a good item game. It saddens me that Blizzard has been even more casual, because I am a hardcore fan of Blizzard and Diablo.

I would definitely be interested in hearing some of the new soundtrack (Tristram theme to be specific

I like the idea of darker monsters, and I hope the environment is darker this time too. It would be amazing to go back to the original track of Diablo 1 and 2, as a game with a “terror” atmosphere.

Diablo III failed at this: It’s an epic gam. It is cool. But it is way, way too colorful. I loved the atmosphere of Diablo 2, with creepy monsters and hell actually looking like hell. Epic doesn’t equal “terror-creepy” like D1 and D2. The ideal would be a mix of both, but I think focusing on the adult atmosphere is very important for Diablo.

In addition, I think some funny easter eggs are great, but I really don’t want to be forced to meet funny characters like Covetous Shen (hiding in a barrel and saying joke-lines). This is another thing that breaks the “terror” atmosphere.

We also need more dark places. The first act on Diablo 3 almost captured the atmosphere of D1-D2 with the cemetery, church and torture chambers. If we had a bit less light and bright effects and spells, it would look really creepy. However, Act 2, 3 and 4 were way too bright and not creepy at all imo (ok, Act 4 is heaven, I get it. But, again, more epicness and not enough terror). Act 5 was a step in the right direction again.

Finally, as a Wizard, of course I want to cast cool spells and destroy hordes of enemies. However, I think it is important to balance the visual effects to make them look cool but without making things too sparkly with purple, red, yellow and other super colorful effects all the time.

I totally agree with your perspective on this. Diablo 3 had “epicness”, but not enough “terror” and “adult seriousness”, if we can call it like that.

I agree with this. While I don’t intend to shade console or any adaptation for console players, console games generally have a more superficial-looking UI and that is how the current UI art looks for me as of now.

I hope developers adapt it to look more like the art of the game keeping the ease of use that’s already present. As the poster I quoted above said… make it more “Thematically Dark and Diabolic”!

I think what would really make the UI pop is getting rid of the “Button Tutorial” look and making the “Tool tips” a hover over to see feature. Instead of seeing left click and right click or T for teleport; make it to where I have to hover to see what I need to click. This is for PC not console that I’m referring too.

So, I created an improved version/concept of D4’s inventory by editing the image that was provided in the blogpost. It imo is much better now. This is intended as feedback to the D4 devs.

A few additional information:

  • Angelic/Demonic/Ancestral Power is now under Details, that is why they are not seen in this image.
  • The potions are being dragged to a specific inventory like in D3, that is why you don’t find them in this image.
  • I added Shoulders, Belts and Gloves to the Equipment
  • I have replaced ‘Attack’, ‘Defense’ and ‘Life’ with ‘Damage’, ‘Toughness’ (aka ‘Effective Health Pool’) and ‘Recovery’. since they are better indicators for your overall dps, EHP and healing.
  • the numbers are just examples to illustrate the concept.

If the UI Devs wanna use this image as a template/inspiration/blueprint/etc, they can do so and iterate on it and change whatever and however they want.

Maybe the community tel me if they like it and what could be made better.
