I’d like to be the first I’ve seen to state, I’m dissatisfied with Diablo IV’s rendition of Duriel. Duriel received the least build up in Diablo 2 , aside from being know as the Prince/Lord of Pain, and guarding the tomb of Tal’Rasha as a punishment and acceptance of his renewed loyalty to the prime evils. He allegedly presides over a realm of Pain adjacent to Andariel’s realm of Anguish. Firstly Duriel’s DIV model has been given some extra weight and a big vertical mouth on his stomach, all I see is a Ghom knockoff, I can think of a dozen more creative alterations off the top of my head that would hold true to what little we know of his character better than this halfbaked Ghom knockoff. THE VENUE not sure if this is the final venue for the Duriel fight as depicted in the videos put out by Blizzard but it takes place in a dark cave which right off the bat just seems like a redo of the venue from D2. We’ve done the D2 Duriel fight a million times and no doubt will do it a million more in D2 Resurrected. There’s no lore I know of that suggests that this would be his favored terrain. Additionally he has burrowing holes that he seems to disappear down as a fight mechanic, I think that’s a great addition that adds more flavor to a fight in this venue, however I feel like we shouldn’t be in a cave in the first place, also physically he doesn’t look like a creature that would be good at burrowing. The burrowing mechanic makes me think this is close to if not the final Venue for the Duriel fight. Not one torture victim in sight. I think they want to recapture the feeling the original Duriel fight had where he’s heavy hitting hard to escape, you’re trapped with him it’s dark and you’re afraid. This feeling can be achieved without recycling basically the same venue and while doing so depriving us of the Lore and character buildup we could get from encountering him under literally any other circumstances. Aside from what we know about his participation in the Dark Exile we know very little of him. I want to know Duriel, I want to see what he’s truly capable of, what he’s driven to accomplish, more words from his mouth. Being the Lord of Pain I feel like he could bring more of that gritty gorey darkness we love about this game he has THE LEAST BUILDUP of all the Lords of Hell and to pawn him off on another cave fight after bringing him back just seems like lazy writing. What do you guys think? I feel like since the game is so far from finished this should be brought to the developers attention if it’s not already too late, just like all the other monsters in the game he looks scary and cool but he doesn’t look like a truly upgraded or even Original Duriel he looks like Ghom or a D3 act 3 Phasebeast. quite frankly what i’ve seen on him in D3 sucks and he’s got just as much potential as any of the other Lords of Hell.
Paragraphs are your friend.
Yeah, I wasn’t too fond of Duriel’s new appearance. His appearance in Diablo 2 suggested that he was a powerful brute of a demon whose great scythes could bring forth pain, carnage, and death to the unprepared.
That said, it’s worth remembering that powerful demons tend to look different whenever they revive (for example Diablo looked different in each Diablo game as well as the Diablo 3 wrath animation video). And while I’m not fond of Duriel’s new appearance, I can’t deny that his new form probably suit his title as “The Lord of Pain” more so than his previous hulking form. Unlike his previous form, whose main source of weapons for inflicting pain seemed to be his scythes, his new form suggests that nearly his entire body is an instrument for inflicting pain, from his scythes, irregular spikes, to even his massive stomach mouth; this Duriel is an engine of great pain.
Where did you see diablo 4’s rendition of Duriel? Cant find it anywhere
Ever heard of the expression a picture says 1000 words? All I see is a wall of text and no picture… maybe let us judge it for ourselves.
Both where revealed at BC 2019
For Andariel, you can find a short Explenation on her in the Art of Diablo - Pannel
At around Min 7:09
But seems she is back to “normal”, so far this is her in the Last “Whats Next”

An for Duriel you get to see some Footage on the World&Lore - Pannel
At around Min 34+
I’ll oblige, however you can simply google “Diablo 4 Duriel”:

Yeah, I had noticed that. Quite honestly I was confused by her appearance back in 2019, because I was like “what happened to her back appendages?”. Seeing her again in the Rogue’s trailer was exciting, because it does look like she’s return to normal in a sense. However by the looks of it, her appearance probably never actually changed. If we take a look at her appearance revealed in Blizzcon 2019:
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/diablo/images/5/5f/Andariel2-D4.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20191116130027
We see that rather than her back appendages, Andariel has a giant contraption chained to her, and it’s spewing out fire (which is a known weakness of Andariel).
Looking at her in the Rogue announcement trailer, Andariel seems to had regained her back appendages, and the contraption previously seen is no longer there. So it appeared at first glance, Andariel’s appearance was changed back to how it originally was, however taking closer look will show that Andariel still has chains on her body. So with that mind, it leads me to believe that Andariel appearance from Blizzcon 2019 to her appearance in BlizzConline 2021 are one and the same. The contraption isn’t a permanent feature of hers, instead it’s likely a seal that physically and/or magically restrict her power, and around the events of Diablo 4, someone or something had set her free, hence why we see the remnant chain links on her.
Duriel has been brushed off relatively quickly in D2, I guess that’s true.I’m hoping for a little more backstory on the villains, and I hope they don’t seem like they’re going to be wasted and lost in the pot of bosses.
I hope that the story elements, the background and info about hell, heaven and the whole universe are not just chewed up by someone.
It should be done in such a way that the real info and exciting unknown truths are hidden as a kind of reward in unreal zones and deepest corners, in the most unbelievable places. So after the feeling of just being secrets and I I hope that maybe this will also give you a little chance to start special quests that give you a bonus to resistances, or unlock more tasks first that contain more knowledge.
The common people, knows only the superficial things, but we the heroes, discover the deepest secrets:)
About the appearance of the bosses, you can argue.
I found Mephisto from D2 as my favorite boss so far and I liked his slightly ghostly appearance in combination with demon flesh, nasty and vicious. The video about it at the chapter transition was really top
Duriel was for me rather a kind of giant beast worm that stood upright.
For me he went a little under at that time.
I think that the demons always look good when they are not too animal-like. Diablo, Baal, Andariel and Mephisto, but also Asmodan and Belial, as well as Diablo from part 1 and Nakruul as Hellfire, embody for me this kind of demons that I find good as chief villains.
There was also a movie, I think Gate 2 was called, where the demons also took control and then broke out of the people. I also found well done so halfway^^
Oh, and quite a wall of text…
Paragraphs are desirable
I like how they kept mentioning Andariel throughout D2’s Act 1 before we finally caught up with her at the end.
I hope we have several Duriel-related quests in the region that we’re gonna encounter him, seeing the effect his evil has on the land, so we can get to know him a little better.
Then we can whoop his butt.
That would be great imo.
Yes, and it’s very important that it builds up the boss and doesn’t sissify him into a sissy.
We need to experience more fear, respect and a tension through this information. I want to slowly get a tingling sensation from adrenaline in my fingertips and wet hands the closer I get to him.
I do need to build a connection, like with a villain in a movie, but it needs that certain something.
Even after the hundredth kill, this feeling of facing a great evil won’t go away.
D3 screwed that up big time.
But it would be nice if we were led to this feeling again and could experience it.
How to do that in detail now is a good question.
How do I build up the evil, give background knowledge, but still make it inscrutably mysterious, oppressive and scary etc.?
Maybe give Stephen King a call
Duriel was a core game hard and frustrating challenge.
-I hope this flaw won’t be repeated.
I had originally intended this post to be shorter and the Chinese food joint was about to close so I had to hustle out the door. In the event that I repost this elsewhere I’ll be sure to include paragraphs, thanks for the suggestion.
If you click the little blue pencil icon under your opening post, that lets you edit it. You could then include some paragraph breaks and save the changes.
D2 screwed it up even more. We didn’t even know Duriel existed until he ambushed us.
He’s fine… actually I like him better, he’s not so fast any more… I found him one of the hardest bosses in Diablo II because that fight was so manic… like you literally have to kill him before he even touches you or you’re just stun locked in a frozen state and die instantly.
I like that about it as well, that his body is an instrument of pain, and I agree that his previous D2 form fell short of what I’d expect from the Lord of Pain. I love how their appearance can change when they revive in a new host and I feel like the stomach mouth although definitely an effective tool at inflicting pain was uncreative, and less effective than other options not to mention already done. With all of his small legs and his extra Trex scythe arms they could have given him another set of arms with terrifying hands, also possibly a cold aura, while having him spawn terrifying maggot like adds with arms and maybe legs suitable for the maggot king, that could help him torture his victims. There are better ideas out there, I’m not going to go too in depth, for a cave boss the design is fine, but that’s just it, he has too much potential for this fight, and character model to be a beefed up rehash of D2.
And what others ideas did you have ?
A Hybrid between a Mantis and a Centepid ?
Good. You keep agreeing with me, and I’ll make a great mother-in-law.
